|Apr-01-17|| ||chessgames.com: For the record: the correct answer to today's April Fool's spoiler is 26...Bxf6, although the needlessly complicated 26....Qc5 is also acceptable.|
|Apr-01-17|| ||Walter Glattke: Very difficult, because black could play
28.-Qc5 29.Qc6 or 28.-Bxf6. Black advantage were then after 29.Qxf6 Qxf6 30.Rxf6 Rd1+ so 31.Rf1 is the only answer. 31.-e2 32.Ne3 ef1Q+ 33.Nxf1
with little black Advantage.
|Apr-01-17|| ||yadasampati: I do not understand this puzzle, because white can win the game with 28. Ne3! See the comment in the notation: "White resigns unnecessarily, as 28.Ne3! would allow White to cover f1 and win the game."|
|Apr-01-17|| ||al wazir: I think I see an improvement on my earlier (2005) analysis: <26...Qc5 27. Qb6 Qxb6 28. Nxb6 e2 29. Re1 Bxf6> 30. Na4! Bd4+ 31. Kh1 Bxb2! (to stop white from playing 32. Nc3) 32. Nxb2 Rd2.|
If 33. Na4/Nc4, then 33...Rd1 wins. If 33. Rb1, then 33...Rxb2, and white has nothing better than 34. Re1 Rxa2 35. Kg1, and now I think it's a draw (but I'm not very good at ♙ endgames). If 33. Kg1, then 33...Rd2, and now 34. Re1 is forced, so black can play 34...Rxa2.
|Apr-01-17|| ||Walter Glattke: My mistake was the number of moves, I meant 26.-Bxf6 or 26.-Qc5 27.Qb6 in the comment above, then 26.-Bxf6 27.Qxf6 Qxf6 28.Rxf6 Rd1+ 29.Rf1 e2
30.Ne3 ef1Q+ 31,Nxf1 Rb1 with little black advantage.|
|Apr-01-17|| ||Once: Can I claim the point for spotting that 26. Bxf6 wins or should I take the point back for forgetting that I've been here before?|
|Apr-01-17|| ||WorstPlayerEver: 26...Bf6 27. Qf6 Qf6 28. Rf6 Rd1 29. Rf1 e2 30. Ne3 Rf1|
|Apr-01-17|| ||AlicesKnight: I saw the lines mentioned by <FSR> and was surprised when I looked at the game itself. Eat your heart out, Marco! Von Popiel vs G Marco, 1902|
|Apr-01-17|| ||WorstPlayerEver: Lol I really can't understand why you guys are 'interested' in chess..
But I won't give any lines no more. If no one reads them anyway.. or uses standard notation (long or short).
I wonder what occupies your brain. If anything at all.
This IS a chess site, right? I wonder.|
|Apr-01-17|| ||FSR: <WorstPlayerEver> Sorry, that analysis you gave shows that you don't live up (down) to your handle.|
|Apr-01-17|| ||Walter Glattke: I remember, Marco gave up, while he could had win with a skurille looking bishop move.|
|Apr-01-17|| ||agb2002: Black has a bishop for a knight and two pawns.
White threatens fxe7 and fxg7.
Black can try to exploit the advanced passed pawn and the weakness of White's back rank with 26... Bxf6:
A) 27.Qxf6 Qxf6 28.Rxf6 Rd1+ 29.Rf1 e2 30.Ne3 Rxf1+ 31.Nxf1 e2=Q - + [q vs N+2P].
B) 27.Rxf6 Rd1+ 28.Rf1 e2 is similar to A.
C) 27.Nxe3 Qxe3+ 28.Kh1 Bxb2 29.Qb7 Qf2 - + [b vs P] (30.Rxf2 Rd1+ 31.Rf1 Rxf1#).
D) 27.Re1 e2 looks very good for Black. For example, 28.Na3 Bd4+ 29.Kh1 Bf2 wins decisive material due to the back rank mate.
Another option is 26... e2:
A) 27.fxe7 Bd4+ 28.Rf2 (28.Kh1 exf1=Q(R)#) 28... e1=Q(R)#.
B) 27.fxg7 Qc5+ as in A.
C) 27.Re1 Qc5+ 28.Kh1 Qf2 29.Qa5 (29.Rg1 e1=Q wins) 29... Qxe1+ 30.Qxe1 Rd1 wins.
D) 27.Rc1 Rd1+ wins.
The second option looks simpler.
|Apr-01-17|| ||agb2002: I noticed the queen x-raying f1 while analyzing 26... Bxf6, but forgot it when I considered 26... e2.|
Sometimes it's better to stick to the good move instead of looking for a better one.
|Apr-01-17|| ||mel gibson: Sometimes you take a risk & it doesn't pay off.
The computer says:
26. .. Bxf6 is the correct solution:

|Apr-01-17|| ||catlover: I didn't see 23. Ne3. Should have realized that with today being April 1st, there had to be a spoiler element in this puzzle.|
|Apr-01-17|| ||morfishine: Yes <catlover> there had to be a prank today|
|Apr-01-17|| ||jith1207: <catlover> : The whole world is a spoiler on that day. CG, well playboy-ed.|

|Apr-02-17|| ||Fusilli: <Conrad> It would have been easy if what was played had been the actual solution. But the point was the April fool's day prank, and on that regard, I think it was great.|
|Apr-02-17|| ||saturn2: I went for 26..Qc5 27 Qb6 QxQ 28 NxQ Bf8 (threatening Bc5 so king or knight have to move) and then e2|
