Jan-30-09  Eyal: Btw, right now Movsesian seems to be winning against Van Wely, and Radjabov against Wang Yue, so we might have four leaders with +2 after this round.

Domdaniel: Interesting opening by Kamsky, with 3.c3
Jan-30-09  Eyal: In other words, the first winter traffic jam ever seen in Wijk aan Zee...
Jan-30-09  Gypsy: Tjhis was an interesting stylistic throwback, something that Schlechter might have played back in early 1900s.
Jan-30-09  achieve: <Eyal> Good one! I'll have to time my busride carefully... ;)
Jan-30-09  sallom89: well played.
Jan-30-09  Ulhumbrus: This game may be worth comparing with the game Botvinnik vs Lasker, 1936 One alternative for Black is 13...h6 instead of 13...Nf6.
Jan-30-09  beenthere240: It's fascinating to compare blacks pawn center after 18...bxc5 and 32. fxe3. The game almost looks hypermodern, daring black to occupy the center and then counterpunching from the wings.
Jan-30-09  Eyal: <This was an interesting stylistic throwback, something that Schlechter might have played back in early 1900s.>

Yeah, just the stuff Kamsky likes to pull off in order to get his opponents early out of theory and "just play chess". Seems that White got a lasting advantage after 18.Ng5! and that after 31...dxe3 Black's position became completely hopeless.

Jan-30-09  Ulhumbrus: Instead of 8...Qa5, 8...a5 discourages b4, as Botvinnik played against Lasker.
Jan-30-09  messachess: Fine win by Kamsky.--excellent positional play in great complications. It looks like Karjakin's problems start with the loss of a pawn on move 24. 31...dxe3 looks like a mistake--doubling white's Rooks on the f file.
Jan-30-09  mrbasso: Simply disastrous opening play by Black. Questionable is already 4...g6?!. Why not 3...c6? Is a draw with Black against Kamsky a bad result? Of course 3...c5 is also fine after 4.dxc5 e6. I really wonder what Kamsky has prepared there since 5.b4 a5 is known to be pretty good for Black. 5.Be3 maybe? Doesn't look very convincing either...

<31...dxe3 looks like a mistake--doubling white's Rooks on the f file.> Exactly.

An Englishman: Good Evening: I agree with <mrbasso>; Black was much too cavalier about his early pawn minus.
Jan-31-09  Eyal: <Simply disastrous opening play by Black. Questionable is already 4...g6?!. Why not 3...c6? Is a draw with Black against Kamsky a bad result?>

I have the impression the Karjakin fell into a sort of psychological trap that is set up when the opponent plays a passive-looking offbeat opening - he felt the need to punish Kamsky by "refuting" it immediately, and so played impatiently and too aggressively for his own good, soon finding himself in trouble.

Jan-31-09  Karpova: According to Rybka 3, 8.Qb3 was the novelty (<(8. Na3 in Fridman Daniel - Rakhmanov Aleksandr, Internet 2006.06.17>)

Instead of 13...Nf6 Rybka 3 suggests <(13... Qe7 !? 14. Ne1 Be6 15. Nd3 a5 16. f3 Nxd2 17. Bxd2 a4 18. Rf2 d4 19. cxd4 exd4 20. Rff1 Bc4 21. Rfe1 Qf7 22. Ra1 Rfe8 Rybka Aquarium (0:05.56)+0.40|d18)>

17...b6 gets a ?! (<(17... Bd7 was better 18. a4 a6 19. c6 bxc6 Rybka Aquarium (0:00.00)+0.59|d15)>)

31...dxe3? (<(31... Rc8 32. Re1 Rxc6 33. bxc6 Qxc6 34. Nxa5 Qc8 35. Rh1 Qa6 36. Nb3 Rc7 37. Nd2 Bxd2 38. Qxd2 Bxc4 39. a5 Rb7 40. Rc1 h6 41. Ra3 Rb4 42. Raa1 Qb7 43. f3 Rybka Aquarium (0:01.44)+0.81|d17)>)

32...Kg8 and 35...Rc7 were also inaccuracies.

Jan-31-09  ajile: Classic Kamsky style. Simple yet solid. Starts off looking like a Colle System and then Kamsky transposes into something offbeat with the bishop fianchetto. White tempts Black to overreach. The middlegame central play by White is pure positional genious.
