Jan-21-11  Hesam7: Has Carlsen ever played Berlin? Or is this his way of getting back at Kasparov? ;)

moronovich: Carlsen will soon bag this one I think.
Jan-21-11  Shams: Not the game I would have chosen, but oh well.
Jan-21-11  TheaN: With Smeets on six minutes this is probably not going to take long, seeing the position.

  moronovich: <Hesam7> Yes he has.
Jan-21-11  Eyal: Carlsen played this Berlin endgame several times as Black - he has a +1 =2 record in classical games:

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

Jan-21-11  Ulhumbrus: Anand said in London that the Berlin wall was one of the most difficult defences for White to play against, and that if White made the best use of his chances he might win one in ten games.
Jan-21-11  TheaN: How Smeets is going to make 18 reasonable moves in +3 minutes is beyond me. In fact, I think it's close to impossible in this position. I'd thought he would move the first five to ten moves faster since this game is live but he wasted three minutes on regular moves. 0-1 soon aye?
Jan-21-11  Ulhumbrus: Perhaps Carlsen will connect his Rooks by 22...Kb7
Jan-21-11  Eyal: Anyway, in priciple it seems like a good opening choice against Smeets, because that's not the kind of opening where crutches of 25-30 computer-assisted prep moves are usually very helpful, so Carlsen's basic big advanatge in positional understanding and quality of play has a good chance to make itself felt.
Jan-21-11  Kinghunt: Carlsen's winning this one, I think.
Jan-21-11  Eyal: ...not to mention time management.
Jan-21-11  Marmot PFL: And another endgame lesson from carlsen, after yesterday's flawed rook and knight masterpiece

  moronovich: <Eyal> Spot on !
Jan-21-11  Eyal: Meanwhile, Shirov seems to be going down in flames against Kramnik - who, judging by this game as well as the 1st round game vs. Nepo, plays against the Scotch very, very well.
Jan-21-11  TheaN: Oh they get 30 seconds per move initially? Then Smeets ain't going to fall to the flag but he might as well resign as it is.

tpstar: <chessgames.com> Thanks for the second broadcast. =)

Two minutes for fifteen moves against Carlsen is a death wish.

Jan-21-11  Marmot PFL: Nepomniatchi is pounding Giri, maybe L'ami will draw nakamura though. Good training for the young Dutch players.
Jan-21-11  Eyal: Funny that they "traded" doubled pawns on the c-file and now Black's pawn structure is much better. Also, White's pieces look rather awkward and clumsy - e.g., why waste the rook on such a passive role as defending f2, when he could have played 22.Kg2?
Jan-21-11  Eyal: Now White is losing e5.

ketchuplover: <Eyal> Perhaps he didn't like having the knight pinned.
Jan-21-11  Chesschatology: The player pic.s looks very appropriate.
Jan-21-11  dakgootje: Giri is completely lost - so he's going to complicate the matter as much as possible.

Shame Nepo is not falling for it so far :P

Jan-21-11  Marmot PFL: So white has a threat, Nc6. many moves to avoid that and win. Maybe Re4 Rxf7 Rxg4+ Kxg4 Ne5+ is best
