[what is this?]

Evgeny Ilgizovich Bareev was World Under-16 Champion in 1982 and since then has been a regular representative of Russia at the highest levels of world chess. He tied for first place in the Soviet Championship of 1990. Subsequent tournament successes include back-to-back victories at Hastings (1990-1991), fourth place at Linares 1994, joint second at Sarajevo 1999, clear first at Wijk aan Zee 2002 and third the following year. He reached the quarterfinals in the FIDE World Championships in 1999 and 2001, and was a semifinalist in the Candidates for the classical world championship at Dortmund 2002. He has previously been ranked as high as fourth (January 2003 and July 1991).

Bareev now lives in Toronto, Canada. In September 2015 he officially changed federations from Russia to Canada, thereby becoming Canada's #1 player and scoring +4-3=3 at the Baku Olympiad (2016).

Aug-07-05  rdwsusanto: the cause of his lost is not the opening, but his bad form
Aug-07-05  Kangaroo: Bareev's allegiance to Rubinstein variations -

both <1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4>

and <1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6. 4. Bg5 dxe4> - is romantic and deserves much of respect - as well as his habit in playing <1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 c5> and numerous Caro-Kann games.

Bad shape that he has not yet been able to get out from is the explanation of his failure at the European team championship.

Sep-04-05  azaris: In the Russian Superfinal Qualifiers, Riazantsev is facing off against Bareev's Slav. It's quite an interesting game where Black has delayed castling and played f6.
Sep-05-05  percyblakeney: Top seeded Bareev just lost with white against current leader Kobalia in the above mentioned tournament.

tamar: Check out the photo of Kobalia at the top of http://www.chesspro.ru/main/index.h...

Doesn't he look like Kramnik with a little of Topalov thrown in? What are those Russian scientists up to with their genetic experiments...

Sep-07-05  yoozum: Wild game against Belov. Bareev is actually doing well in this tournament, surprising, isn't it?
Sep-12-05  yoozum: And congrats to the winner of the Kazan Championship, Evgeny Bareev. He finished pretty solidly at 6.5/9.

Hell, go check it out on www.chessbase.com

Sep-12-05  jamesmaskell: Interesting to see the names he will be up against in the Super Final. Morozevich and Svidler...maybe we'll see the new FIDE World Champion there?
Sep-12-05  yoozum: It's not anything unusual. He'll be playing in almost the same conditions this year as last year, sans Kasparov.
Sep-12-05  iron maiden: Wonder if chessbase is ever going to bother editing the headline that reads, "Bareev wins Russian Championship."

Sep-14-05  yoozum: Does anyone know how many points Bareev will gain from the event?
Sep-26-05  yoozum: That really is quite a nice picture.
Sep-26-05  roni.chessman: He looks like the main villain from Spiderman 1.

After move 30. is the endgame won for black, theoretically speaking? Or did white mess up somewhere?

And btw, how do I insert a diagram?

Nov-04-05  SEMENELIN: <roni.chessman> no he looks like a former nazi to me.(just kidding) =)
Nov-28-05  babakova: Bareev is playing very good chess right now. I think he can go far in the fide world cup.
Dec-06-05  notyetagm: As a fellow French player, I sure hope that Bareev's French is up to the assault that Magnus is going to launch against it tomorrow
Dec-06-05  aw1988: I really hope Bareev doesn't open with the French again, much as I like Carlsen. It's a good defense, but he doesn't seem to do well with it.
Dec-06-05  notyetagm: Hoping for a crushing French Black victory over Carlsen tomorrow but that is probably not going to happen. :-)
Dec-08-05  Saruman: <Akavall> FEN Help Page
Dec-24-05  Petrosian63: Where's a bio for Bareev?

Highest rating of 2739 - He deserves one.

Dec-28-05  yoozum: At the rate he's going, he'll be 2700+ in no time.
Dec-28-05  yoozum: ...and Bareev is expected to be about 2698-2699 on the January list.
