Phony Benoni: I doubt that the F. Stoppel who played at Pittsburgh 1946 is the same person as the European player Franz Stoppel, but can't find any definite information about either player.
Jan-22-07  Benzol: Jeremy Gaige gives Franz Stoppel as being born in Vienna, Austria on the 3rd of October 1930. However, there's a question mark with this.

Phony Benoni: Thanks. I suppose it's possible that Franz Stoppel came to the US during WWII and snuck in a tournament at Pittsburgh before moving back to Europe, but somehow it seems unlikely.

GrahamClayton: The 1946 US Open player is Fred H Stoppel of Cicero, Illinois (1924-2002). Stoppel was a long-time official of the Illinois Chess Association.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> Thanks! I've confirmed that in an USCF rating list, and will have a correction in the hopper soon.
