ROBERT STRONACH MITCHELL
(born May-04-1941, 84 years old) New Zealand

[what is this?]
Robert Stronach Mitchell was born in 1941 in Wellington, New Zealand. The first part of Bob's chess career was mainly in correspondence chess but with work commitments chess became a casualty. He returned to over-the-board play upon retirement in 1999 and has worked in an adminstrative capacity for the New Zealand Chess Federation. He was New Zealand Senior Champion in 2003 (shared with Victor Portougal), 2005 (shared with Kenneth William Lynn), and 2006 (alone). He currently tutors chess at two New Zealand schools and at a chess club.

Richard Taylor: Benzol - the bio should talk about his contributions to chess and his role in the recovery of bodies at Antarctica in the tragic Erebus disaster of 1979.

Jonathan Sarfati: http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/media/p... Bob was a police Inspector back then, living in Tawa. Later he moved to Auckland for a promotion to Superintendent.

Jonathan Sarfati: When he was secretary (IIRC) of the NZCF in the 1980s, chessplayers noticed the curious pattern of writing the surnames in all-capitals. It turned out that this was the standard in police reports, and Bob carried it through.
