Jan-24-16  TheFocus: Happy birthday, Joseph Witton!!
Jan-24-23  optimal play: J. G. WITTON.

Joseph George Witton was born at Hobart on January 24, 1852, learnt chess at the age of 14, and soon was known as Tasmania's leading player.

In 1883 he came to Melbourne, where he became a prominent member of the old Victorian Chess Club.

Shortly before the cessation of this club he was considered one of its strongest members, and in a match between it and the Melbourne Chess Club he played top board and drew with Mr. A. Burn, who was at one time Australia's finest player.

On fourteen occasions he played in interstate telegraphic matches, winning five, drawing five, and losing four.

His chess knowledge was exceptionally all-round, as he at different periods tried his hand at simultaneous and blindfold play, problem composing, and even chess poems.
