Apr-13-23  Petrosianic: <greed and death: Does anyone know what his initials "N R" stand for?>

He does.

Apr-13-23  stone free or die: <<Petrosianic> He does>

That's an assumption (assuming that you're assuming).

* * * * *

<g&d> N R are initials referring to his father's name according to <chess.com>

https://www.chess.com/players/vigne...

As it turns out his bother is also a GM with a similar set of initials:

N R Visakh

Vignesh just became a GM on Jan 29, 2023, as noted in the following link:

https://www.chessbase.in/news/Vigne...

wherein we also learn the father's name:

N. R. = <Narayanan Rajeshwari>

Apr-14-23  stone free or die: Drip, drip, drip...
Apr-14-23  greed and death: Thanks for the information
Apr-14-23  stone free or die: <g&d> I believe the proper way to write their names is as follows:

<Visakh N R> and

<Vignesh N R>

which matches their FIDE cards.

(I don't know why the periods are omitted in the father's name, is that an Indian practice for abbrevs?)

A similar case is Anand, with a curious twist. His name would normally be

<Anand Viswanathan>

where his name is Anand, and the patronym Viswanathan. Somehow, people assumed his surname was Anand, and many people started calling him Vishy. Anand didn't mind, and in fact, his FIDE card follows this adopted convention:

<Anand, Viswanathan>

Chessbase has a nice article about Indian names explaining Anands case in detail:

https://en.chessbase.com/post/what-...

(I often refer to it for those interested in this kinda stuff)
