George Walker born 1803 was an author and chess organiser who did a great deal to promote chess. He founded both the Westminster Chess Club in 1831 and the St.Georges Club in 1834 and as an author wrote about the game in his chess columns in 'The Lancet' and 'Bell's Life'.

In 1823 Walker suggested the idea that, since the Black pieces were thought to be the lucky color, the players who drew White should always have the first move as compensation!

It wasn't until 1829 when this rule became universally accepted.
