Heinz Liebert is a (East) German IM (1966) whose best tournament results include 1st at Ulan Bator 1956, 2nd at Polanica Zdroj 1966, 4th at Varna 1969, 3rd at Kecskemét 1970, 2nd= at Lublin 1972 and 3rd at Starý Smokovec 1975. He's also represented East Germany at every Olympiad from 1962 to 1972.

Die Gemeinde Ochla, Kreis Krotoschin, kam 1818 durch den Wiener Kongress zum preußischen Regierungsbezirk Posen. Als 1920 der Versailler Vertrag in Kraft trat, wurde der Bezirk wieder Polen zugeschlagen. In dieser ländlichen Gegend kam 1936 Heinz Liebert zur Welt. Nach Kriegsende fand er in Großdubrau bei Bautzen eine neue Heimat.

Schach erlernte er durch einen Schulfreund als er elf Jahre alt war. Heinz Liebert gewann 1954 in Meißen die letzte Gesamtdeutsche Jugendmeisterschaft. Zwei Jahre später gelang dem jungen Meister in der Mongolei sensationell der Turniersieg. Seitdem wird Liebert augenzwinkernd <(winking)> "Der Löwe von Ulan-Bator" <(The lion from Ulan-Bator)> genannt. Der Mathematiker blieb nach dem Studium in Halle/Saale und arbeitete von 1969 bis zur Pensionierung im Rechenzentrum der Buna-Werke. Mit Buna Halle holte er mehrere Meistertitel.

Heinz Liebert nahm 18 Mal an DDR-Einzelmeisterschaften teil und wurde dabei zweimal Vizemeister. Bei den Schacholympiaden von 1962-72 gehörte er der DDR-Mannschaft an. Sein größter Erfolg war der 2. Platz beim Rubinstein-Gedenkturnier 1966 in Polanica Zdroj hinter Smyslow. Mit seiner ruhigen und bescheidenen Art hat sich der Hallenser viel Sympathie erworben.**
