Aug-21-05   Kings Indian: I like his Starting Out: the King's Indian and his book on the Pirc.
Dec-08-05   Pengutron: from his games, it looks like he won all his caro-kahn games as white. I've been trying to get a copy of his king's gambit book for a while.

Eric Schiller: <Pengutron> Not all of them: J Gallagher vs E Schiller, 1985
But he did nail me in this one:
J Gallagher vs E Schiller, 1986

KingG: <Eric Schiller> Well, the one he won transposed into a French, so i'm not sure if it should count. :-)

By the way, what do you think of the Fantasy Variation?

Eric Schiller: <KingG> What French? You'll never see me on the Black side of a French, except for one game in 1995, where I expected my opponent, Vinay Bhat, to play an unsound line. He surprised me by playing a main line, so I punted, captured on e4 and eventually won the game that brought me the Cal. State Championship. My Caro-Kanns are pure, except that I sometimes capture on d5 with the queen, switching to Scandinavian territory.

Eric Schiller: <KingG> I am totally unimpressed by the Fantasy Variation. Black gets a nice game easily, for example:K Klaman vs Kholmov, 1949

KingG: <Eric Schiller> Sorry about that, i didn't notice that the Knight wasn't on c3, so i though it had transposed into the Steinitz Variation of the Classical French.

In the example you give, White's opening play isn't very impressive, i think 6.c3 would have been better. eg Morozevich vs Bareev, 2004

notyetagm: Anyone know what books/videos GM Gallagher is working on right now? I believe he has Starting Out: The Najdorf from Everyman due out very soon.
Apr-03-06   wallytherhino: What does the Caro-kann offer over the scandinavian?

notyetagm: If you play the Caro, you have to be prepared to face the Panov-Botvinnik Attack. No such things against the Scandinavian.

  IMlday: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 Qxd5 avoids Panov-Botvinnik by transposing to a Scandinavian. But why learn 3.e5 lines when 1.e4 d5 avoids them?
Apr-03-06   Zebra: I have been trying to get hold of a copy of Gallagher's book on the Kings Gambit. Any ideas (or opinions on the book) would be interesting.
Apr-04-06   Zebra: <Greginctw: his starting out book on the caro kann was pretty bad. Very unhelpful and useless. If anyone wants to know what I specifically disliked ill be glad to mention it. Ive heard great things about his books, but I would definately stear clear of "Starting Out: The Caro-Kann".>

I would be interested to know more details. Does anybody know Kotronias' book on the Caro-Kann (recommended in BCO2)?

notyetagm: Anyone know what GM Gallagher's next book will be on? Thanks.
Jul-27-06   blueguitar322: Gallagher didn't write the Starting Out: Najdorf book (which is excellent, btw), but he did co-write The Complete Najdorf, Vol 2 (all but 6 Bg5) circa 1998 with John Nunn.

His King's Gambit book is one of the best I've read from White's point of view, though many of the important lines (3...d6, 3...g5) won't be up to date. I wish he'd write a 2nd edition, but seeing as the last King's Gambit he played was 2001 (at least according to this database - though he's only had 4 opponents respond with 1...e5; 3 Ruys and 1 4Knights) I doubt it.

Still, he wrote the King's Gambit section on NCO and there were half a dozen important novelties that he published, a few coming in the main lines. I don't think I would challenge him with 1...e5 if I played him either.

I have the book on the Caro-Kann and it's not very deep, but great for club players (not deep enough for masters) and definately not worth the maligned rep it seems to have here. Maybe some of the reason is that everything the Caro-Kann stands for from Black's perspective is the opposite of how Gallagher plays...? I've read much worse overall.

Part of the issue might be style; if one is just reading to find the " ", "=", or " " at the end of a line, he'd be hard to follow. He spends a lot of time in prose offering thoughts, suggestions, principles, lessons he's learned (and taught!), etc.

Anything he writes on the King's Indian Defense is simply inspiring. His Trompowsky book was great. The Pirc book wasn't bad, but even though he plays it I'm not sure it will convince many players to pick it up as Black. "Beating the Sicilian 3" and "Beating the Anti-Sicilians" are both great.

Looking over his games, his opening repertoire is fairly straightforward: 1 e4 as White, Najdorf/King's Indian/Pirc as Black.

notyetagm: Has GM Gallagher stopped writing chess books? I believe his last book came out back in 2004!

Pity, he was a great author of chess literature.

  brankat: Happy Birthday GM Gallagher!
Jun-15-08   Zygalski: I hope Gallagher does an update for Winning with the King's Gambit. I know Neil McDonald wrote a KG book (apparently for Black it seems!) & Gallagher pretty much refuted all of McDonald's most promising tries for Black in Nunn's Chess Openings. I think the problem is that Gallagher very rarely gets many people to play 1...e5 against him nowadays, so probably suffers from a lack of practice!

alexrawlings: I'm currently reading '101 attacking ideas in chess' by Joe Gallagher and finding it quite useful. I bought in afther a player at my chess club recommended it. Anyone else read this book?
Nov-29-08   HannibalSchlecter: Gallagher is the man! He is not afraid to take chances and explore the unknown land of chaos and confusion.
Sep-02-09   WhiteRook48: caro-kanns are weird
