Olga Chess Viewer Quickstart

Olga Chess Viewer

*** Known Issues ***

• 3 Move repetition reports for the rest of the game

• Piece animation "wiggles" when landing on a destination square, on some platforms in some circumstances.

• No way to alter the speed of "autoplay" mode from mobile phones or tablets. (Desktops can press 1-9, or 0 for lightning-mode.)

• Copying and pasting the game score strips out the spaces (e.g. 1.e4e52.Nf3Nc63.Bb5 etc.) Workaround for now: use the "View PGN" feature and copy straight from the ASCII text.

• Olga chokes on PGN that does not include "x" for captures, e.g. ed5 instead of exd5.

• Olga chokes on odds games which technically do not start on move #1 (e.g. pawn and move) Full Member

  ajile: <OhioChessFan: <2...Nf6. White to move.> <I like that a lot. It's silly to say "Black just played 2...Nf6". Since when has White ever played 2...Nf6?>

Since when has White ever played 2...anything?>

You missed the joke. Black's last name was "White" in that game. lol.

  OhioChessFan: <cg.c: Yes, that was my point. The word “status” no longer appears, preserving valuable screen real-estate. >

I'm having a hard time understanding how <White to move.> as part of "2...Nf6. White to move." is worth the space.

Premium Chessgames Member Thanks <ajile>.

<So now it appears I CAN update Java and still use with Olga? Awesome.> If you don't have a specific reason to use Java I would recommend deleting it rather than upgrading it—it's very bloated software that the internet left behind, some people express security concerns regarding it, and the sites that require it are vanishingly few. In any case, the choice is totally yours.

Premium Chessgames Member <offramp> Have those two issues been addressed? I'm double-clicking my iPad as fast as I can, and the only time I zoom is when my finger misses the button.

The 1-9 second settings should solve the speed issue, but I've been thinking that perhaps the settings should be more exponential, like the Richter scale:

0 = super-fast (just for fun)
1 = 1 second
2 = 2 seconds
3 = 4 seconds (default)
4 = 6 seconds
5 = 10 seconds
6 = 15 seconds
7 = 30 seconds
8 = 60 seconds
9 = 2 minutes

I think a scale like that would satisfy most people's needs.

  offramp: The iPad double click issue is fixed for me at least.
Oct-25-17  7he5haman: <CG> Yes it's fixed now - thank you very much!! :)
Premium Chessgames Member Great!

  Bubo bubo: I really like Olga, in particular its analysis features. But how can I enter an underpromotion in analysis mode?
Premium Chessgames Member <I really like Olga, in particular its analysis features> Thanks, we put a lot of effort into that analysis window.

<But how can I enter an underpromotion in analysis mode?> Sorry, that's one feature that's not supported. As you know, it gives you a queen every time. We've got notion of a pop-up window that lets you choose the piece on our features-list for Olga 2.0.

  offramp: The 0=superfast is very good. Unique!

I visited a guy in Holland who had been a hammer thrower for the Dutch in the various Olympics of the 1950s. He had taken a lot of bad steroids then, and now in the 1990s he was in a very bad state.

But he had videos of Columbo that he watched in silence at 8x speed. His daughter said that it SOOTHED him.

Premium Chessgames Member
  offramp: Chessgames I would, despite the 1950s Hammer thing, get rid of the 2 minute one and insert a half-second time at number 1.

What type of human would use the two minute version?

Perhaps Kate Reid in The Andromeda Strain.

Premium Chessgames Member Imagine a chess assemblage of one form or another, and as a "decoration" a video screen plays through classic games at the speed of molasses. It surely won't be the most popular setting, but once in a while, somebody will find a use for it.
Premium Chessgames Member I watched Speed-0 on those two Nakamura vs Computer games where he underpromotes 6 times. The game takes on a very interesting motion, swirling around like a hurricane.

  Chessical: Schlechter vs Lasker, 1910 [analysis] by asking for a computer analysis, the original notes appended to the game are overwritten by Stockfish. Is there a way to protect original master annotations in such situations?
Premium Chessgames Member
  crawfb5: <Chessical> Capa's annotations are still there. Look for the button that reads:

It will flip back to Capa's notes and the button will change to:

Maybe in these cases the master annotations should be the default, but at least we haven't lost them.

Thanks for the reply! I'm looking forward to Olga 2.0 and postpone the analysis of games with possible ♘-promotions until then.

Premium Chessgames Member If a game has been analyzed by Stockfish you'll see:

If you click on the link you'll see the computer analysis, which hides the original analysis (if there was any to begin with), and then you'll see a new link:

which, if clicked, switches you back to the original.

Therefore, games can now have two distinct sets of annotations that you can flip between.

Your Preferences Page page now has an option <Show computer annotations when available.> If this option is checked, the default will be to show the computer analysis in all cases where it's available. As always you can toggle back and forth between the regular notes and the Stockfish notes.

Nov-05-17  sneaky pete: In Tarrasch vs Von Scheve, 1879 Olga siops after 9... Qxb2 and doesn't show the last 10 moves. It's really a pity, because those last moves are quite nice.
Premium Chessgames Member
  zanzibar: <sneaky> pgn4web shows all the moves to the end, so that must just be an Olga bug.
Premium Chessgames Member
  JointheArmy: <sneaky pete> What browser? Olga shows all the way to checkmate on Safari.
Nov-07-17  sneaky pete: <Don'tJointheArmy> Firefox, but that doen't matter, the bug has been fixed silently and I can see all the moves with Firefox too. I think I know what the problem was, a mistake in the gamescore. When I posted here last Sunday (as I remember now) the score still said 11.Nbd2 .. when there is only one white Knight. That has been changed to 11.Nd2 .. and now everything is jake.

Yesterday I tried to look at a Morphy game where PCM gave odds of pawn and 2 moves. That still puzzles Olga. There is a nice diagram with a white pawn at e4 and pawn f7 missing, and that's all, no moves.

Premium Chessgames Member In the game Tarrasch vs Von Scheve, 1879 the last 10 moves were missing because of bad PGN 10 moves from the end, specifically a 'x' was missing from a capture. I just fixed it by hand, so now it works. It has nothing to do with Safari/Firefox/etc.

We've decided the best way to fix this issue is to kill two birds with one stone: write software that scans every game in the database looking for missing capture marks, missing (or erroneous) checks, games that end in mate but don't have #, and all that kind of stuff. Then just fix the bad games.

Until then there are an estimated 300-500 games in the database that are currently rudely truncated by Olga.

<sneaky pete> <Yesterday I tried to look at a Morphy game where PCM gave odds of pawn and 2 moves. That still puzzles Olga.> Really? We tested it on all sorts of odds games and it seemed to work. Can you dig up that game?

Nov-08-17  sneaky pete: <> It's Maurian vs Morphy, 1854
Premium Chessgames Member Oh, thanks. It seems the issue must be the initial move number being 2 instead of the expected 1. We'll see what we can do about that.
Nov-12-17  olinart: When the Olga viewer was first introduced it worked very nicely on my machine - Firefox on a fedora24 OS. For the past week the browser hangs up waiting for the board screen to download. When I move to another screen the Olga board appears briefly before moving to the next screen. At the bottom of my hung screen is a message "transferring data from (I'm not a facebook member.) Clearing cookies did not help. This problem does not occur with the Chrome browser. Thought it was worth reporting.
