Jun-11-16 | | Jambow: <Carlsen is higher rated than Nakamura in OTB blitz (2931 vs 2896 live rating). He also defeated Nakamura 25.5-14.5 (or was it 26.5-13.5?) in their private 40 game blitz match a few years ago. So you could definitely make a case of Carlsen being slightly stronger in blitz, but in any case these guys play at a comparable level.> Not sure I would count off hand late night hotel room games as anything. However in OTB blitz they are very very close and an argument for either of them being the worlds best blitz player is reasonable. They have swapped places for the highest rated blitz player on the live list, and are virtually equal currently. I'm pleasantly surprised at Caruana who found some game in blitz. Really he probably would be a top blitzer if he played it often enough. The game is the same, same pieces same board, same rules except for the clock... Caruana tends to evaluate every position deeply in blitz you have to trust your instincts and that takes development by practice. |
Jun-11-16 | | The Rocket: <However in OTB blitz they are very very close> They sure are. It's only been <6 years> since Nakamura won a blitz game against Carlsen. Apart from the fact that one has been world champion, is higher rated the wide majority of the time, then yeah, you could argue for Nakamura. |
Jun-11-16 | | 1971: <Jambow> Disregarding their match which Carlsen won by 10+ games is very convenient for your argument... |
Jun-11-16 | | KnightVBishop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xa6... so there is a guy that looks strikingly similar to Magnus the video says its Magnus...but does anyone know if this is really him or just a strong look a like? |
Jun-12-16 | | Jambow: They played late night in a hotel in Carlsen's time zone. Maybe that means a lot to you but not me. Head to head doesn't mean much either, it is over all that matters and Nakamura has been rated world number 1 and is now #2 by a very slim margin. I guess we should ignore actual results in rated games thus having the highest blitz elo and focus more on an offhand impromptu blitz match from 6 years ago? I only wish I was as even handed as you guys are. Now 2896 elo vs. 2930 elo a gap of 1.1% Yea I'm crazy but didn't you know I heard Carlsen won a tennis game too? Magnus had a modeling career you can't forget that after all that would be convenient for me to fail to mention. Sorry that I was so distracted by their official results, I will try to focus more on other things... |
Jun-12-16 | | 1971: Bravo. A wonderful demonstration of rationalization. |

 | | tpstar: <brankat> Welcome back. =) Blitz and Rapid both have the potential to carve out a select audience, as they are quite different from Classical. In that sense, it is somewhat surprising to see Kramnik here, given his previous comments about "popcorn chewing fans" and such. |
Jun-12-16 | | Jambow: <1971> rational thought might be something that you could try yourself. Nah why bother with actual results that count when we could pontificate about other things... |
Jun-12-16
 | | HeMateMe: Sweden qualified for Euro 2016, but Norway did not. Does that bother Norwegians, in general? I know Magnus plays pick up soccer games, I assume he's a football enthusiast. He would probably be watching Norway play in the present group play. In these situations, does Norway then root for Sweden by proxy (in ice hockey if the USA is eliminated we always then root for our neighbor Canada), or is there bad blood between the Scandinavian friends/rivals? Perhaps we can all root for newbie Iceland? |
Jun-12-16 | | 1971: Ok, <Jambow> we'll talk actual results. Carlsen is rated #1 and has a winning record vs Nakamura. There's no debate or arguing. Carlsen is the best. I thought this was obvious to all. |
Jun-12-16 | | rogge: <In these situations, does Norway then root for Sweden by proxy (in ice hockey if the USA is eliminated we always then root for our neighbor Canada), or is there bad blood between the Scandinavian friends/rivals?> I think it's fair to say that most of us root for our fellow Scandinavians/neighbours. Except, in ice hockey, it's 1. Canada and 2. USA for me :) |
Jun-12-16 | | kappertjes: <Now 2896 elo vs. 2930 elo a gap of 1.1%> I don't care about this argument you guys are having, but talking about elo-differences in terms of percentages of the actual rating is very... creative. |
Jun-12-16 | | morfishine: Speed chess, Rapid chess, Bullet or Blitz, its all pointless from an analytical point of view But it sure is fun after a few beers

Jun-12-16 | | Jambow: Thanks <1971> nice to see you are at least capable of focusing on relevant facts. Notice I never said Magnus wasn't the best blitzer, but remember Nakamura has held that position too, did you acknowledge he was the best then? The gap between them falls into the realm of noise, not including your own. Magnus has the highest elo aka results in blitz and the all time peak blitz elo, so that actually matters. I'm a Carlsen fan he is one of the greatest of all time and that includes blitz. <I don't care about this argument you guys are having, but talking about elo-differences in terms of percentages of the actual rating is very... creative.> Agreed I recognized that when I wrote it but since there was a lot of "creative" things being said and I was like meh we are already tangential why not hit escape velocity and I threw it out there. Seems pretty obvious that Nakamura and Carlsen are very close at blitz chess. Wasn't really arguing that Nakamura or Carlsen was or is better simply that the numbers say the gap between them is very small. |
Jun-12-16 | | Pulo y Gata: Let's talk about classical chess to make some gaps gaping. Come on. |
Jun-12-16 | | Pyke: Hey <Brankat>, how are you! |

Jun-12-16 | | diceman: <KnightVBishop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xa6...
so there is a guy that looks strikingly similar to Magnus the video says its Magnus...but does anyone know if this is really him or just a strong look a like?> His singing sounds like it's rated about 1650. |
Jun-14-16 | | chessalem: carlsen lost 4 blitz games whereas Wesley lost only 3. How could that make him better than Wesley in the most difficult to beat category? Consider this. Magnus initial classical blitz rating was adopted as his initial blitz rating- that explains his ascendancy to the top of the chart without playing a solitary game of blitz. Then, he gets unlimited invitation to further boost his rating...I don't consider him the best blitz player in accordance with the bogus FIDE ranking. He didn't even make in to the finals of the ICC blitz open...losing to Grischuk in the semi-finals.https://www.chessclub.com/article/i... In contrast, Wesley should have been ICC blitz champion in 2014...he was leading his opponent 2 games to none in the quarterfinals when he got disconnected and was disqualified by ICC...https://www.chessclub.com/article/i... Wesley would never join in ICC events after that. |

 | | alexmagnus: With the K factor as high as it is, any initial rating advantage has vanished long ago. As for ICC arguments - online blitz and OTB blitz are different games. |
Jun-15-16 | | Jambow: <As for ICC arguments - online blitz and OTB blitz are different games.> I agree with the first half of your statement as that is simply math. The second not so much. Chess is chess and online vs. OTB not very different either. That being said if one never plays under those exact rules and conditions it could catch them out from time to time. Nakamura got burned during his first Blitz world champion match OTB for example. No matter Magnus has the highest blitz elo rating and that pretty much sums it up. Maybe with more events the confirmation is stronger. |
Jun-15-16 | | nok: <He also defeated Nakamura 25.5-14.5> Naka was slow to start though, he lost the first ten or something. It can happen in blitz. |
Jun-15-16 | | SirRuthless: ^^^^^^^^^^
They are going to be playing many blitz and rapid games OTB and online this summer. There will be some bullet as well. |
