Did you happen to notice that Black has three rooks in my mis-copied version? That little old pawn promoted and got back to a8 faster than you can say Libby Scooter! My bad, sorry for that.

Lol, I think you are on to something 9×9 Extra Rook on d1/9. Castle very long Kb1/b9, Rc1/c9 when the d-Rook has moved from the first/ninth rank. Certainly becomes more attacking then.
NB there are Rooks on light and dark squares. Otherwise the Rook on a1/a9 and the Rook on i1/i9 would have the same color. Makes sense! |

Complicated position. Time pressure caused a real blunderfest. Praggna ended a piece up. And then made no more mistakes. |

He beat me in Rapid games. I remember the simul when Short said he and Harry Ruan were very strong for their age...they both lasted a long time. Short only lost one game I think to FM Bruce Watson. Benzol ( a member here) obtained a draw...> What a nice anecdote, my dear Richard. Perhaps Bobby needs a good advisor to improve his chess but it seems to me he has some talent. Just my opinion. He is certainly talented.
I just looked at the Benoni he played. I used to play the Benoni and still do sometimes. It is a double-edged opening and he lost in the complexities but it is one of those things perhaps you have to try from time to time. But I also nearly beat Rassmussen in 2015, or shall we say, I played in such a way (in the NZ Open) that in the complexities, I got a strong positional advantage and he got into severe time trouble. Very severe. Scary it was...It was the first time I had played a GM in a standard game. Then I made an impulsive move, not the move I had planned really, and let him off the hook. What made me nervous was watching his time: right down to 15 seconds sometimes. It was below one minute for about 12 moves...!! But it was an interesting experience.>> |

| | Richard Taylor: I think the lesson is that if you play a GM, say in an Open, to not play passively, keep as many pieces on as you can and try to attack or complicate if possible. As the game simplified I lost the thread especially as I knew how good GMs are in endings etc... But even there, there is a lesson, as my mistake wasn't losing, I should have "changed gear" and searched for chances. I tried to but I was a bit knocked back by the change in fortunes...so food for thought. Chess I mostly find too difficult though. |
