Jan-03-17  zanzibar: <WPE> oh lordy, I just blindly copied the position in the diagram, focusing on the attack. But I screwed up.

Did you happen to notice that Black has three rooks in my mis-copied version?

That little old pawn promoted and got back to a8 faster than you can say Libby Scooter!

My bad, sorry for that.

* * * * *

(Now the position is sharp, and 1...Qf6 is the 2nd candidate move, giving White the advantage.

Black has to play 17...Nf3 to win, gaining a Q+3P vs. BNN advantage.

I guess Siva played on. How long? )

Jan-03-17  WorstPlayerEver: <zz>

Lol, I think you are on to something 9×9 Extra Rook on d1/9. Castle very long Kb1/b9, Rc1/c9 when the d-Rook has moved from the first/ninth rank.

Certainly becomes more attacking then.

NB there are Rooks on light and dark squares. Otherwise the Rook on a1/a9 and the Rook on i1/i9 would have the same color. Makes sense!

Jan-03-17  WorstPlayerEver: The GM norm is 7/9, performance >2600, average opponent > 2380

Most unlikely Pragnna will live up to that norm. Or he has to beat 2 >2500 players in a row. 2 of these guys:

GM SP Sethuraman IND 2649
GM Alex Fier BRA 2614
GM Ben Gledura HUN 2585
GM Deep Sengupta IND 2570
GM Murali Karthiekeyan IND 2530
GM Allan Stig Rasmussen DEN 2502

Jan-05-17  PhilFeeley: Indians dominating this event. I bet the British wish they had the same kind of sponsorship program.
Jan-05-17  WorstPlayerEver: Long ago Hastings was like the Wimbledon of chess.
Jan-05-17  Howard: That goes back at least 40 years!
Jan-05-17  WorstPlayerEver: 40 years? That means 5 elo points inflation a year!
Jan-05-17  Howard: Not to sound picky, but Elo-inflation didn't really start setting in until roughly the mid-80's, by my estimation.
Jan-05-17  Thirups: Fantastic finishing by 11 year old praggna..!
Jan-05-17  Shams: <Thirups> For sure, +4 is unreal. Did he get a norm, do you know?
Jan-05-17  Thirups: Sorry I dnt know..But I thnk he ll get soon..
Jan-05-17  WorstPlayerEver: He won 4 times. So I guess he'll be about 2480/90 now. I think Rasmussen had a win the last game. He missed the crusher and then it became equal. Complicated position. Time pressure caused a real blunderfest. Praggna ended a piece up. And then made no more mistakes.
Jan-05-17  WorstPlayerEver: Any way, Karjakin hit the 2480 mark about 4 months later.

Jan-06-17  Pedro Fernandez: << Richard Taylor>: I beat Bobby Cheng once. He was only 10 but still pretty strong. Also another game was a draw. He then moved to Australia from NZ. He beat me in Rapid games. I remember the simul when Short said he and Harry Ruan were very strong for their age...they both lasted a long time. Short only lost one game I think to FM Bruce Watson. Benzol ( a member here) obtained a draw...> What a nice anecdote, my dear Richard. Perhaps Bobby needs a good advisor to improve his chess but it seems to me he has some talent. Just my opinion. Greetings.

Richard Taylor: <<Pedro Fernandez> Well, that was some years ago. He was then in the A Grade and now he is an IM. He will have a coach. I would be very unlikely to beat him nowadays. I might get lucky! He is certainly talented.

I just looked at the Benoni he played. I used to play the Benoni and still do sometimes. It is a double-edged opening and he lost in the complexities but it is one of those things perhaps you have to try from time to time.

But I also nearly beat Rassmussen in 2015, or shall we say, I played in such a way (in the NZ Open) that in the complexities, I got a strong positional advantage and he got into severe time trouble. Very severe. Scary it was...It was the first time I had played a GM in a standard game. Then I made an impulsive move, not the move I had planned really, and let him off the hook. What made me nervous was watching his time: right down to 15 seconds sometimes. It was below one minute for about 12 moves...!! But it was an interesting experience.>>

Richard Taylor: I think the lesson is that if you play a GM, say in an Open, to not play passively, keep as many pieces on as you can and try to attack or complicate if possible. As the game simplified I lost the thread especially as I knew how good GMs are in endings etc...

But even there, there is a lesson, as my mistake wasn't losing, I should have "changed gear" and searched for chances. I tried to but I was a bit knocked back by the change in fortunes...so food for thought.

Chess I mostly find too difficult though.

Richard Taylor: I had trouble with the Catalan in a game last year so thought I would look at this game, but it was a bit short to learn much!

Richard Taylor: He's a good player for his age for sure!
Jan-07-17  Sokrates: Hastings has most certainly become an international event. Hardly any Brits to spot on the list. Love names like Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa and Alexandr Hilario Takeda dos Santos Fier, though. There also seems to be a Scandinavian group present. How wonderful!
