Oct-19-15  apexin: Nakamura's the favourite here, very strong results recently. I like watching Jobava play also, tactically agressive and unusual in his choice of openings,he might be the one to watch out for.

This is a team event. Naka is listed on board 3 for Obiettivo, although in the first round neither he nor Karjakin (board 2) were playing. Not sure is they haven't arrived, were spared or are not going to play.

The Azeri team SOCAR is as usual top seed, they have Mamedyarov on board 6(!)

Troller: Round 2 is ongoing, and indeed both Naka and Karjakin are playing today, against Pelletier and Bauer respectively.

But Ivanchuk-Hammer is the most intriguing out of the opening, position after 5..g6:

offramp: Babula v Giri also looks very complicated. Giri should win but it is not straightforward.

offramp: On second thoughts, Giri, despite his connected passed pawns on a2 and b3, might lose.

Oct-19-15  galdur: Nakamura got drubbed by Pelletier in some nasty home cooking.
Oct-19-15  Pulo y Gata: And Ivanchuk brought down the Hammer.

When you play the KID you either win a brilliancy or lose a catastrophe.

Oct-19-15  varishnakov: Wow both Giri and Nakamura got beaten by 2500s today. You don't see that happen very often.

Troller: Apart from Carlsen, now only Topalov and Anand are above 2800, and just barely. Topalov is playing Gelfand today in Skopje.

Also Kramnik has joined his team for round 3 where he is paired against Nepom in an inter-Russian match. Obiettivo with Naka and Karjakin (and Leko wisely put on board 1) is in similar fashion playing an Italian adversary in a match that should be pretty one-sided. In practise, 4-6 teams (with few dark horses) are playing for the medals here, and these will meet each other from now on.

OhioChessFan: Does anyone know in general, how much the top notch players get paid for playing on a team?
Oct-20-15  notyetagm: <Fishy: Pelletier just destroyed Naka, horrible play by Naka..just Turrible.>

Pelletier vs Nakamura, 2015

Naka got caught out by the strong novelty 13 a5xb6!? and immediately erred by playing ... ♖a3-a5? instead of the computer-recommended ... ♖a3-a8!. Then he could not hold a position that was difficult to play for Black.

GM Jan Gustafsson put out a good video on the game.

Oct-20-15  jphamlore: After just a few rounds of this event, Giri's classical rating has dropped to overall #9, admittedly by the smallest fractions of a ratings point.

I wonder if the Grand Chess Tour will switch to an averaging formula over a one year period like FIDE uses for Candidates automatic qualification by rating, or whether it will again take a single snapshot at a moment of time. I am doubtful that there is a stable notion of any given year's top 10 players.

Oct-20-15  notyetagm: <jphamlore: After just a few rounds of this event, Giri's classical rating has dropped to overall #9, admittedly by the smallest fractions of a ratings point.>

Wow, how is this going to impact Giri's <QUALIFYING BY RATING> for the 2016 Candidates Tournament??

Kramnik is up to #6 in the world now on the Live Ratings!

Oct-20-15  Chuckles: Giri's still pretty safe as far as qualification goes. To qualify at this point, Kramnik needs a rating change of 35+ points relative to Giri.

Troller: Lots of interesting battles today; just to name a few:

Topalov-Leko, Karjakin-Caruana, Adams-Nakamura, MVL-Radjabov, Svidler-Kramnik, Aronian-Dominguez, Ivanchuk-Wojtaszek, Harikrishna-Tomashevsky.

Oct-21-15  Karne: This is a marvelous tournament, perhaps the greatest tournament held in this miserable year so far, in terms of quality.
Oct-21-15  haydn20: <Troller:...But Ivanchuk-Hammer is the most intriguing out of the opening, position after 5..g6:> Holy ****! Another opening dogma (development above all) bites the dust.
Oct-21-15  haydn20: <notyetagm> could you give a link for Gustaveson's video of the Naka game? Thanks in advance.

They don't normally play in tournaments with them either. Giri particularly maybe.

Oct-21-15  FairyPromotion: Tomorrow we will have Siberia vs Socar, which means we might get one of the greatest match-ups ever, Kramnik vs Topalov.
