  Stonehenge: Some info:

http://en.spbchesstournaments.com/m...

Oct-28-12  paavoh: The veterans seemed a bit rusty in the first round, eh? Loss by Almasi, draws by Akopian, Shirov, Zvjaginsev...
Oct-28-12  brankat: It's a pretty strong field though. I assume the tourney is a Swiss.
Oct-28-12  waustad: Nice win by Bodnaruk over Almasi.
Oct-28-12  hellopolgar: swiss tournament...strong player loses first round game again...
Oct-29-12  whiteshark: I've never heard of half of the players before.
Oct-29-12  Octal: I wonder how many of them have heard of me?
Oct-29-12  elmochess: is this accelerated? There are 341 competitors, the middle of the field is roughly 2240 yet the top players played 2400+ ?

HeMateMe: All these Memorials--they really respect the game over there. My own neighborhood Kennedy Chicken is hosting a tournament. It's the <Jose Cucci Church Fried Chicken Memorial>. The event honors the man of the 80s, his love of chess, and his chicken. High finishers get discount chicken nuggets and shrimp baskets.

At first, the organizers were going to make those prizes gratis, but then someone said "Hey, lets not go crazy here!"

Oct-29-12  waustad: <elmo>It looks like it: http://chess-results.com/tnr83806.a... By the way, 2 rounds have already been played.

Oct-29-12  Refused: <elmochess: is this accelerated? There are 341 competitors, the middle of the field is roughly 2240 yet the top players played 2400+ ?>

Without looking at it, and just judging from your post, I guess they did the following.

They cut the field in half before the first round.
Highest rated player of the first half plays the lowest rated of the first half. 2nd highest of the first half plays the 2nd lowest of the first half etc. And highest rated players of the second half plays the lowest of the second half. etc.

Not that uncommon to do pairing like that in the first round of opens. To avoid pairing like a GM playing a 1500 elo points opponent in the first round.

That way of pairing actually makes sense, because usually you hold an open and give GMs and IMs free entry or even pay them a participation fee, so that somebody (usually from the hosting club/federation) can achieve a norm playing those tournaments. Well, I guess you know where this is going.

Oct-29-12  parmetd: Refused. What you are describing is accelerated pairings which is what elmochess asked about.
Oct-29-12  Refused: Thanks didn't know what this way of pairing is called.
Oct-29-12  Refused: Oh anyway, from round 1 I can highly recommend

V Dzhangobegov vs D Khismatullin, 2012

That is really an entertaining game. But I am a bit afraid it will go unnotice since Shirov was not involved.

Oct-29-12  Strongest Force: Didn't. Lasker say chess & life was worthy of our best fight? If you have a storm in your life keep praying and fighting and you will make it. Go Negi!
Oct-29-12  brankat: <Strongest Force>

"It is too beautiful to spend your life upon. Many times have I managed to break with Chess, yet I have always fallen in love with it again. I was too captivated by the conflict between ideas and opinions, attack and defence, life and death."

<Emanuel Lasker>

Oct-29-12  waustad: Oh. I thought that they cut the field in half and did usual Swiss pairings on the top half and the bottom half separately. That way the top player is playing somebody from the 75 percentile and the bottom player is playing somebody from the 25 percentile.
Oct-29-12  waustad: No. Shirov played player 171 in the first round. They did a normal Swiss pairing using the whole field.
Oct-29-12  waustad: I suspect that the source of confusion is that the first games we saw here were from the second round.
Oct-29-12  waustad: Anestasia Bodnaruk is now at 2.5/3 and tomorrow plays her 3rd consecutive GM. If she keeps at it, there may be a norm available. She's have to stay near the top of the table to keep getting titled players and would have to do well against them. The rules are arcane. http://www.fide.com/component/handb...
Oct-30-12  Strongest Force: <Brankat>, thx for that quote. I am reminded of the hare-turtle race. The turtle stayed focused & struggled against impossible odds...you never know.

Troller: Hmmm. Shirov, Akopian and Eljanov have all won just 1 game each and drawn 2 so far against something like 2200-2400-rated opposition.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but the turtle recently admitted to blood doping.
