Aug-06-25 | | Olavi: <seen Danny Gormally say Miles beat Karpov with 1 ... a6 at Bath in 1972 or 73.> He got the continent right, that's good for a young GM. Except Bath isn't on the continent. |

Aug-06-25 | | Muttley101: Danny Gormally is a young GM?
There's hope for us all. |

Aug-07-25
 | | Rocket Ron: Danny does a great a great job at the British 2025. Should have been British Champion if Adams was not around |
|
Aug-08-25 | | Olavi: <Muttley101: Danny Gormally is a young GM?

Hans Ree wrote in the 90s of a then young Dutch GM that he confessed to being unable to list the World Champions. Hans thought he should have been stripped of the GM title. The good old days. |

Aug-08-25 | | keithbc: Understandably with so much at stake ( a loss for either would probably have meant no title this year) Adams v Vitiugov ended in a draw. Shame as NV perhaps needed the win in that game as Adams is white v Fernandez next game which will probably clinch the title for Adams. Not just the lower rated DF but also he has not had a successful outing the last few years. I hope I am wrong, but there might be an anti-climax after today's game (Adams - fernandez). |
|
Aug-08-25 | | keithbc: I don't think Adams' participation in the British is what has thwarted Gormally's chance. He (DG) freely admits to not being brave enough (agreeing to draws too easily). |

Aug-09-25
 | | Sally Simpson: Mickey could have been the sole leader if he had put away the chance the commentators had spotted in Adams vs D H Fernandez, 2025 after 18...f5. click for larger viewApparently White chops wood on d6 and e8, then c4 and Bxc6 and the KP ending is greatly in White's favour. Of course I'm nodding along like I agree but could see some cute moves would be needed. After they had finished trying various lines they looked at their computer and it agreed. Mickey chopped on d6 but then played 20.Kf1 and the chance was gone. |
|
Aug-09-25
 | | HeMateMe: just guessing, but after swapping all of the pieces white seems to be able to bring his King to the Queenside where it can gain the opposition by a timely c4. Black's King would be on it's heels guarding the weak queenside pawns. |

Aug-09-25
 | | offramp: Shreyas Royal is 16½ years old. His score is currently 5½/7. He has a real chance of winning this championship. |
|
Aug-09-25
 | | Sally Simpson: After 7 round there are 13 players ½ a point behind the leaders. Both Adams and Royal have the black pieces today, if they both draw then the final round could have four or five players leading the tournament. The tie break rules start on page 11 https://www.britishchesschampionshi... |

Aug-09-25
 | | offramp: GM Stuart Conquest sports an unusual tonsorial combo: shiny smoothness on his crown, then suborbital long grey hair, like a member of <Fairport Convention>. Today, round 8, he is playing <Chivas Regal>. |

 | | HeMateMe: Could sandy Dennis blitz? |
|
Aug-09-25 | | dehanne: <Stuart> should have been named <Norman>. |
|
Aug-09-25
 | | Sally Simpson: The way things panned out there are six players all tied on 6pts going into the last round and they all play each other. Vitiugov 2676 - Conquest 2511
Adams 2663 - Czopor 2434
Pert 2409 - Roberson 2440
On paper (rating difference) you have to fancy Adams to win with a possible tie break v Vitiugov. Pert v Roberson tough to call. There are nine players on 5½ if the above three all draw then we could have a six or seven player tie break. That sounds like fun. |
|
Aug-10-25
 | | offramp: <IF> there's a tie-break, the 2 players are ... getting on.
I mean, they are middle-aged.
Adams is 53 and Vitiu.gov.uk is 38. |
|
Aug-10-25
 | | Sally Simpson: At the moment it is looking very much like there will be at least one positive result on the top three boards so no mass tiebreak. All three whites are showing aggressive intentions Vitiugov - Conquest is this after seven moves

 | | offramp: The top boards have done very well as Black. |
|
Aug-10-25
 | | keypusher: <offramp: The top boards have done very well as Black.> Indeed, decisive results on the top five boards and just one White win. So I guess Adams, Conquest, and Roberson end up tied for first? |
|
Aug-10-25
 | | Sally Simpson: Mickey won the play off v Conquest and is the British Champion for the 9th time. |

|
Aug-11-25
 | | HeMateMe: Congratulations to Michael Adams, a classy fellow who just plays great chess and avoids controversy and silly inuendo. Um....could Adams have won more championships if the fastidious British sports authorities had presented Mickey with decent appearance fees over the years? That would encourage more participation. I suppose the budget for footballers would then have had to be cut by .0000001% but really, I think chess is worth the sacrifice. |
