Oldenburg (1949)

The tournament was played at the Astoria-Haus "Renaissance" from June 19 to July 2. Participants were Rossolimo - French champion 1948, Wood - British correspondence chess champion 1945, Walther - Swiss youth champion, Wade - champion of New Zealand 1944, 1945 and 1948, Tautvaisas - champion of Lithuania, Zemgalis - champion of Latvia, Sarapu - champion of Estonia, Enevoldsen - champion of Denmark, Kieninger - German champion 1937, 1940 and 1947, Rellstab - German champion 1942, Unzicker - the German champion 1948, Rautenberg - German master, Heinicke - German master, Kuppe - Weser/Ems champion 1948, Heemsoth - Weser/Ems champion 1949 and Bremen champion 1949, O'Kelly - champion of Belgia 1937, 1938, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1946 and 1947, Bogoljubov - German champion 1931, 1933 and 1949, and the German master Sämisch.

The tournament program also gives Ludwig Roedl of Germany and the Swede Harry Ahman. They were replaced at a later stage with O'Kelly and Sämisch. Zemgalis of Latvia made the tournament of his life, and shared 1st prize with Bogoljubov.
