Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Russian Championship Superfinal (Women) (2015)

The 65th Russian Women's Championship Superfinal was played 9-20 August 2015 in the Youth Palace 'Megapolis Sport' in the eastern city of Chita, Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia, not far from Mongolia and China. Rest day: August 15. The line-up featured most of the top names, including defending champion Gunina and Kateryna Lagno, who made her debut after switching from Ukraine. Time control: 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 more minutes to the end of the game, with a 30 second increment from move 1. No agreed draws allowed before move 40. Total prize fund (men & women): 8 million roubles (~$127,000), with 530,000 roubles (~$8,400) to the woman champion. If players tied for first, a playoff would be held (two 15+10 Rapid games and eventually an Armageddon).

Aleksandra Goryachkina (at age 16) won with 8/11. Bodnaruk took 2nd place on tiebreak (more games with Black) ahead of Kosteniuk.

Aug-14-15  BUNA: <HeMateMe> Rumour has it that she's the girlfriend of a russian super-gm and therefore had to switch federations.

HeMateMe: I wasn't making a value judgment on whether or not she should switch federations, only that it was odd not to see her in team Ukraine photos on Chessbase. She was born in Lvov.

"On February 25, 2009 she married Robert Fontaine, French chess grandmaster and TV reporter." Fontaine doesn't sound very Russian to me, but I'll take you're word for it.

How badly did Kosteniuk take her husband to the cleaners in the divorce settlement, I wonder? older men never realize they need a pre nup agreement when marrying a younger woman. A mistake that gets repeated over and over.

Aug-14-15  sonia91: <HeMateMe: Fontaine doesn't sound very Russian to me> Lagno and Fontaine divorced (just to point out this)

HeMateMe: just looking at some of these games, I think Gunina is a superior tactician, but Kosteniuk has a better grasp of positional chess.
Aug-16-15  siggemannen: <HeMateMe>, agree with you, but check out the last Kosteniuk game, pretty neat tactics there =)
Aug-17-15  siggemannen: Prenup, the problem is how to bring the subject forward. The woman will usually counter: "why do we need it, don't you think our love will be forever?" and then the guy gets taken to the cleaners :P

alexmagnus: I once said Lagno will be an early peaker. Looks like I was right: her rating peaked in January 2012, and while her ranking peaked in the same January 2012 at 5th, she was ranked 6th as early as October 2003.
Aug-20-15  Nerwal: <I once said Lagno will be an early peaker. Looks like I was right: her rating peaked in January 2012, and while her ranking peaked in the same January 2012 at 5th, she was ranked 6th as early as October 2003.>

It's a bit surprising to notice that apart from the +2600 players Hou Yifan, Koneru and J. Polgar who got the GM title roughly at age 15, all other female chess players were +20 when they got it. Lagno is the only exception.

Speaking of peaking, T. Kosintseva won the russian ch. in 2002 at age 16 like Goryachkina...

Aug-20-15  dx9293: <alexmagnus>, <Nerwal>: Lahno's career has been a massive disappointment, and there's really no other way to put it.

She wasn't a "guaranteed" World Champion, like an Alexandra Kosteniuk, Anna Muzychuk (oops), or Hou Yifan, but a career like Humpy's or, indeed, Anna's would have been acceptable.

Aug-20-15  Nerwal: <Lahno's career has been a massive disappointment, and there's really no other way to put it.>

It's not a complete disaster, she has won a few things along the way : two European Championships, the world title in both blitz and rapid, two Olympiads...

But of course, if we consider she was almost 2500 at age 13...

patzersmurf: "By losing the final round Kosteniuk dropped to third place. She had the same number of points as Anastasia Bodnaruk and more Sonneborn-Berger points but the number of games with Black decided the tie-break - and thus Anastasia Bodnaruk was declared second."
