You have not specified what. Greatest ______ ever is too vague. I for one view Fischer as the greatest chess player ever. The greatest world champion ever? That question is not so interesting to me. There is much more to playing chess than being the world champion. And in Fischer's era, that "much more" included an East-West Cold War. There are other factors. What did you do to advance chess in other realms? There other realms are numerous, such as: playing conditions, prizes, playing formats, drawing attention to chess, inspiring former non-chess players to play, opening innovations, etc. etc. etc. |

However,I don't think Caruana will become world chess champion, or maybe he will become it, but just for a short time. If you look carefully, you find that all TRUE world chess champions were also very strong in blitz and rapid play... |

Then future results are irrelevant. They won't change how good Carlsen is today or was 3 years ago (and if you want to nitpick, Carlsen has already distanced the opposition by a wider margin than Kasparov had until much later). |

| | HeMateMe: absolute playing strength can't be defined in chess, only relative strength, against one's peers. One could say that Carlsen in 2015 is good, but not as good as Fischer in 1971-72. Career length is the key parameter. Fischer didn't have the emotional fortitude to keep it going. Does Carlsen? We'll see. |
