The historical legacy of the tournament is absolutely amazing and it isn't reflected on the website. I am excited to see how the final rankings shift out since there are a lot of players with 8 games or less counted. With 92 players I am very surprised a strong player is not running the table (going 9 wins in 9 games) Jan-05-13    Domdaniel: There used to be a car dealer in Dublin called Duff Motors. They shut down. Not surprising, I guess. Jonathan Hawkins has had a couple of good results at recent British championships, but I don't think he has much international experience. I agree with <wallytherhino>, though - I expected Sulskis or Jones to power away from the pack, but everyone has dropped at least 2.5 points. In the 70s and 80s - when there was a GM all-play-all event plus a swiss challengers, some of the challengers tournaments could be as strong as this. Neither has played since round 8 and there's no explanation on the official website. Did they all get the flu? Panjwani was doing well, too. From the Hastings site - 4th Jan Rui Gao needs ½ point from 2 games and a 2600 player in round 9 or 1/2 v 2231 Jonathan Hawkins needs 2/2 and a 2287 in round 9 5th Jan Rui Gao (CHI) achieved his final GM norm Surely Jonathan Hawkins record at the tournament so far is at least as good as that of Rui Gao? Yet, in Round 9, Rui Gao achieved his final GM norm with a 10-move agreed draw non-event, while Jonathan Hawkins apparently still hasn't with a convincing win. Jan-06-13    kevinatcausa: There are a bunch of requirements (see http://www.fide.com/component/handb... for a full list), but what it essentially boils down to here is that you need a 2600 performance rating. While Hawkins and Gao are both at 6.5/9, Hawkins faced much lower rated opposition (in part because of an early loss, in part because he got paired against a 2148 player punching well above his weight in round 9). So right now Hawkins is performing at 2526 compared with Gao's 2623. Jan-06-13    GlennOliver: Thank you, Kevin. Since Jonathan Hawkins last game is against Rui Gao, I'm guessing that counts as a game against Gao's pre-Hastings rating 2452 and not his 2623 rating at Hastings? The above-linked game was 1-0 (NOT 1/2-1/2, as currently recorded by CG). After 9 rounds, Gawain Jones was sole leader on 7.0/9. Congrats to Gawain! Hastings is not what it used to be, but still a nice title to have under your belt. I believe every world champ until Fischer played it (Karpov also won it, but Kasparov never played there). I answer to an earlier question about players dropping out, often for a couple of rounds, there were reports of a bad stomach bug affecting quite a few players, as well as the usual flu at this time of year.
