Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Palma de Mallorca (1968)

This was the strongest tournament in 1968, featuring the World Champion Petrosian, his challenger Spassky, Korchnoi, who had just lost the Spassky - Korchnoi Candidates Final (1968), Larsen, who had lost the Spassky - Larsen Candidates Semifinal (1968), and Gligoric, who lost the Tal - Gligoric Candidates Quarterfinal (1968). The tournament continued the tradition of Palma de Mallorca (1965), Palma de Mallorca (1966) and Palma de Mallorca (1967), and went on with Palma de Mallorca (1969). It was sponsored by the Council of Palma, Palma tourist office, and the Spanish Chess Federation. Most of the participants came from the olympiad in Lugano (Switzerland), which had ended in the beginning of November.

Korchnoi made one of his best tournaments, as he drew the world champion Petrosian and defeated Spassky, Larsen and Gligoric. In the last round he could grant half a point to Calvo. The five players from the Candidates matches 1968 took the first five places.
