In the summer of 1923, the Witkowitzer Eisenwerke organized a round robin chess event to be held in Mährisch-Ostrau, Czechoslovakia (Mährisch is German for Moravian, Ostrau is Ostrava). In addition to thirteen other European masters, a contract was secured for former world champion Emanuel Lasker to participate. The players were billeted at the Hotel Royal and games were played from July 1-18 in Witkowitz, a suburb of Ostrava. The event culminated in another victory for Lasker, who finished undefeated in his first tournament since 1918, a full point ahead of second place Réti. The final standings and crosstable:

 | | Phony Benoni: Looks like A Selezniev vs Bogoljubov, 1923 is a color problem. Chess365 has Bogo playing White, which would clear that problem up. Apparently, the player listing at the top is compiled from the games themselves, while the crosstable is from another source. When either the game or the crosstable has incorrect information, we get discrepancies. At least we will more easily catch these errors now. The CG Librarian's work is never done. |
