Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Hastings 1927/28

The eighth annual Hastings Christmas Chess Festival was held from December 28, 1927 to January 6, 1928. The Premier event was a round robin tournament played by ten chess masters from Great Britain and Europe. Among the participants were Victor Berger, Edgar Colle, Hans Kmoch, Reginald Price Michell, George Marshall Norman, Edward G. Sergeant, Lajos Steiner, Savielly Tartakower, George Alan Thomas, and Frederick Yates. Records are scarce on this tournament as even the score of games are incomplete to this day. What information does exist has been used to assemble the existing games in the order found here. We do know Dr. Tartakower eventually won this tournament, his second consecutive Hastings premier (and third overall), but two of his games as well as sixteen others are lost, perhaps forever. From the final standings and results of all the games I have reconstructed the tournament table below:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 Pts 1 Tartakower * 0 ½ 1 1 ½ ½ 1 1 1 6.5 2 Steiner 1 * ½ 0 ½ 1 1 1 0 1 6.0 3 Colle ½ ½ * ½ 1 1 ½ 1 ½ 0 5.5 4 Berger 0 1 ½ * 1 1 ½ 0 ½ 1 5.5 5 Yates 0 ½ 0 0 * ½ 1 1 1 1 5.0 6 Michell ½ 0 0 0 ½ * 1 1 ½ 1 4.5 7 Kmoch ½ 0 ½ ½ 0 0 * ½ 1 1 4.0 8 Thomas 0 0 0 1 0 0 ½ * 1 1 3.5 9 Sergeant 0 1 ½ ½ 0 ½ 0 0 * 1 3.5 10 Norman 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 * 1.0

Mar-31-14  zanzibar: Again, like my other comment, BritBase has all the missing games (colors/rounds/exact dates included).

This one is also in the first Hastings-1 zipfile.

Use the same links. I won't check the other Hastings you posted today until after you synch with BritBase.

Sorry if you already looked at BritBase and found problems. But if that's the case, I sure would like to know. I have a great trust for the info on that site, and regard it as "definitive".

GrahamClayton: "The eighth annual Christmas congress, promoted by the Hastings and St Leonards Chess Club, was held in the Town Hall as in former years. A record entry was received, 120 players competing in twelve distinct tournaments. In accordance with the policy of the club, to give British players an opportunity of meeting
continental experts, Dr Saviely Tartakower,
Lajos Steiner, Edgard Colle and Hans Kmoch
received and accepted invitations to play in the Premier, whilst eight foreign competitors were included in the two sections of the Major tournament. The British contingent in the
Premier was the same as last year.
On the first day of the congress, Wednesday,
December 28th [1927], a great part of England was covered deeply with snow and a severe gale had caused the suspension of the boat service from the continent. Competitors were pleasantly surprised on arrival in Hastings to find no snow and brilliant sunshine, but when the Mayor, Councillor AD Thorpe, opened the congress at 1745, news had reached the town that Steiner, Kmoch and Colle of the Premier, Rellstab, Landau and Sapira of the Major, were held up at Ostend, and two English competitors were snowed up in the country. However, all these reached Hastings on Friday [30 December] and the adjourned games concerned were completed by Monday."
