Got it in the pause in the Bolshoj Ballet in Moscow way back in 1979. The same at the Kirov in what was called Leningrad at the time. Both with black and red caviar. Delicious! Some Russian dishes are truly great. A good bortsj is nice on a cold winter's day.> Good to hear that. 1. "cheers" is famous "na zdorovie", 2. Caviar is good with vodka, but only if you have one made in Russia. So called "vodka" in the West is no good, all kinds, Smirnoff, Stolichnaya etc. Eat caviar with champagne, even good one, is "izvrashhenie" or perverse:), 3. Bortsch is not a Russian dish, it's an Ukrainian soup. Kind of different nowadays... regrettably. |

Nobody says "za vashe zdorovie" or "vashe zdorovie" in Russia. It may be possible in Moscow in "high-end" places, but in real Russia the word "vy" which is a polite (very) version of you, is rarely used during drinking vodka:) |

I have indeed tasted original Russian vodka, and just like Gordon's isn't proper gin, Smirnoff isn't proper vodka, but even so, I have to admit that vodka never shall please my palate. LOL to the perversity of drinking champagne with caviar. I think there would be countless perverts around the world who'd disagree, but coming from a country where a "snaps" + beer is common with seafood, I understand the tradition. I didn't know bortsj is Ukrainian, but that doesn't matter to me, if the soup is well made. Overall I am quite ignorant to Russian cuisine, since it hardly ever appears on menus in any restaurant in Europe (with the exception of caviar/blinis, of course). Whether that's a big loss, I have my doubts, since I saw a programme following a Russian family having a traditional Christmas dinner. But then again, many foreigners wouldn't understand the Danish passion for roasted duck with sour/sweet red cabbage, caramelized potatoes and a brown sauce on Xmas eve. :-) I salute differences and variety - how utterly boring would it be if we all only consumed pizzas and burgers? |

Oct-30-16 | | SometimesGood: Russian cousins has its merits. Cakes are formidable. Oh dear yesterday I ate an American sponge cake. Who on earth can like these creamy cakes? Everyone ate just one piece. Russian cake you eat at least four pieces. Pelmeni are great. All kind of fish. Meat is lame. Bread too unless it's not black. Not a big fan of French cuisine except boulangerie. Hate Italian food, all kind of pasta. But like Italian wine. Love Mexican food, Korean, Japanese. Don't like Chinese food, unless Sichuan or northern, Beijing style. Anyway you're right, all have their tastes and diversity in food is good. |

Italian food is just as divers as the people living in Italy. And Italian and French gastronomy, maybe also Spanish, are inarguably the leaders of good food on the western hemisphere. Certainly not Russian or Danish. It's true, though, that personal taste can't be discussed, so good on you for choosing the food YOU prefer. |

Strangely, that dish is only eaten on the evening of December 24, the time when Danes gather and celebrate Christmas (not the 25th). It is, indeed, delicious, but it's also heavy stuff, so I guess that's why it only gets one shot a year for the majority of Danes. |

 | | alexmagnus: Nakamura has some legendary status in 1/0, but there is also a difference of premoving is allowed or not. To my knowledge, a lot of that status is gained by perfectly timed premoves - something Nakamura is really unrivaled in. |
