Nov-16-03 | | refutor: Alex Fedorov = Alexei Fedorov |
Jun-03-04 | | PinkPanther: Interesting, a modern player who regularly plays the Kings Gambit. |
Jun-03-04 | | MoonlitKnight: I think he is considered the top expert on the King's Gambit these days, mostly because he is the only top 100 player who frequently uses it. |
Jun-24-04 | | MalibogKantutero: This GM should be invited to play in a lot of tournaments. It would be good for the King's Gambit. |
Dec-02-04 | | Discoalex: I was just going through all the Kings Gambit games since Im trying to learn the moves, and I stumbled across this guy. Its good that a GM is keeping the tradition alive. Gives me inspiration that this opening is reasonably sound |
Mar-28-05 | | Chris00nj: I find it interesting that many of his opponent's do not play Fischer's line: 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 d6 4. Bc4 h6 5. d4 g5 6. O-O Bg7 7. c3 Nc6 I've been searching the database for alternatives and they are tough to find. Why do GMs play anything else? I would love to find a line to play agains the Fischer defense as I am actively trying to learn the King's Gambit. |
Mar-28-05 | | azaris: <Chris00nj> That line is from the 70's. Even the KG is not so theoretically dead that a shallow line from the 70's would hold the candle against a KG expert like Fedorov. From my novelties generator:
1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 d6 4. Bc4 h6 5. d4 g5 6. O-O Bg7 7. Bb5+!? with idea of 7...c6 taking the square away from the knight and enticing Black to play b5 later on completely wrecking his pawn structure. Then play a4 to bust him open before he has time to get those pieces off the starting line. White controls the center so he's quite safe. |
Mar-28-05 | | Chris00nj: Interesting move. There has to be moves. I doubt that the King's Gambit could be entirely refuted. I'm certainly going to look into it. |

 | | tpstar: <azaris> Yowza! Up through 6. 0-0 Bg7 this "shallow line from the 70's" is tilted in Black's favor Opening Explorer After 7. Bb5+!? maybe 7 ... Bd7 and Black is happy to chop wood while White spends time moving the KB again, and if 8. Qe2 a6. White controls the center but the Pd4 makes for an easy target. Still the KGA always leads to an exciting game for both sides. |
Mar-29-05 | | azaris: <tpstar> Ah, but White won't oblige Black with 8. Bxd7 but continues to develop with 8. Nc3 and if Black snatches the bishop his light squares become weak and White has just developed his queen's knight. Or if instead Black tries to return to the mainline with 8...Nc6, White can try: 9. e5 dxe5 10. dxe5 (there goes the weak pawn) 10...Nge7 11. Qe2 O-O 12. Rd1 a6 13. e6! and now: A) 13...fxe6 14. Bc4 Kf7 15. Bxe6+ Bxe6 16. Rxd8 Raxd8 17. Bd2 with even chances. B) 13...axb5 14. Rxd7 Qe8 15. Nxb5 fxe6 16. Rxc7 Nd5 17. Nd6 Nxc7 18. Nxe8 Raxe8 and White has a nice queenside pawn majority. C) 13...fxe6 14. Bc4 Rf6 15. Ne4 Rg6 16. Nc5 with unclear play. |
Mar-29-05
 | | tpstar: <azaris> Ah, but Black wanted White to play 8. Nc3 because the Pd4 remains an easy target = 8 ... Bxb5 9. Nxb5 a6 10. Nc3 Nc6 threatening 11 ... g4 & 12 ... Bxd4+, or 10. Na3 Nc6 11. c3 Nf6 planning ... 0-0 & ... d5. I think the exchange of lsb helps Black because f7 is much easier to defend. |
Mar-29-05 | | Chris00nj: Well I was looking at my Chessmaster program and it didn't like 7.Bb5+
I tried to play out the position.
Now, looking more promising is...
1.e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 d6 4. Bc4 h6 5. h4!? Opening Explorer Now I also looked at 4. h4, but this isn't any good. Black isn't forced to g5. If Fischer's 4...h6 is played then I think 5. h4 has promise. This was a move he didn't discuss in his Bust. After the immediate 4...g5 5. h4 also looks promising. Opening Explorer |
Mar-29-05 | | Cornwallis: Fedorov is a great dragon player too. He seems to like the attacking openings. |
Mar-29-05
 | | tpstar: <Chris00nj> The drawback to those h4 lines in the KGA is the gaping hole on g3 which Black can exploit = 5. h4!? Nf6 6. Nc3/d3 Nh5 and the threat of 7 ... Ng3 disrupts White's Kingside M Gisler vs C Flear, 1991 <InspiredByMorphy> & I reviewed these lines here D Bordier vs E Larsson, 1988 |
Mar-30-05 | | Chris00nj: <the threat of 7 ... Ng3 disrupts White's Kingside> In the reference game 8. Nd5 was played. What about 8. Ne2 instead? |
Mar-30-05
 | | tpstar: <Chris00nj> After 7. d4 Be7 8. Ne2 Black should play 8 ... Bg4 to meet 9. Nxf4!? with 9 ... Bxh4+, otherwise the Ph4 is hard to defend. One of my Yahoo games went 6. d3 Nh5 7. 0-0 Bg4 8. Nc3 Nc6!? since 8 ... Be7 was better and now if 9. Ne2 g5. Here's a good example of ... Ng3 ruining White's Kingside, although Black blundered and lost Kaltschmidt vs Baroin, 1989 |
Mar-30-05 | | midknightblue: Good to see that with the hockey lay off, this guy has more time for chess tournaments. |
Mar-31-05 | | Chris00nj: <tpstar>
I think evaluating the best line against Nh5 will be a job of Fritz the magnificient. Looking at games vs patzers on Yahoo may not be as effective. |
Jan-07-06 | | KingG: <chessgames.com> I submitted a King's Gambit game Fedorov-Anand Wijk Aan Zee 2001 a few months ago. I was wondering if you received it, or if i should try uploading it again? |
Jan-07-06 | | KingG: lol. I can't believe AJ had the nerve to submit that game. Did he really think he wouldn't be found out? |
Jan-20-06 | | chesswonders: Fedorov is on a roll in the 4th Parsvnath International Open chess tournament happening in Delhi. He is 7.5 after 8 rounds in this 10 round Swiss tournament! http://www.delhichess.com/4th_igm/P... |
