KATERYNA LAGNO
(born Dec-27-1989, 35 years old) Ukraine (federation/nationality Russia)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Ekaterina Alexandrovna Lagno (Kateryna Olexandrivna Lahno in Ukrainian) was born on December 27, 1989 in Ukraine. In 2002 she became, at the age of twelve years, four months and two days, the youngest Woman Grandmaster (WGM) in chess history. In 2007 she became the eleventh woman to be awarded the Grandmaster title.

In 2003 she won a round-robin in Kramatorsk with a performance rating of 2622, finishing a full point ahead of a field that included three grandmasters. In 2005 she became European Women's Champion after winning a tie-break match with Nadezhda Kosintseva and repeated this success in 2008. She qualified for the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2012) and defeated Khaled Mona in the first round, only to fall to Georgian IM and WGM Lela Javakhishvili in the second round, thereby exiting the title contest.

In 2009 she married French GM Robert Fontaine.

May-16-14  Beholder: It seems whoever keeps this page isn't up to date on Katya.

To begin with, she has already divorced GM Robert Fontaine.

But the much more important (for us at least) bit of trivia is that she has switched federations and will be now playing under a Russian flag.

Gone the way of Karjakin, one might say.

Yes, in Russian forums there are some speculations around what happened. Some conflict with the Ukrainian chess federation, but the exact nature of it is kept secret.

May-17-14  Beholder: Katya Lahno herself on that: http://chess-news.ru/node/15375

Katya's mom (note that this is a Ukrainian source, not Russian): http://sport.segodnya.ua/others/mam...

And the head of the RCF: http://chess-news.ru/node/15359

Jul-13-14  waustad: Why was her transfer fee 2000 Euros where Anna Muzychuk's was 5000? Is it because it was the second time for her? Ratings are similar and each played for another country repeatedly and recently. Could it be because Anna M has been over 2600 and Kateryna L hasn't? Karjakin was Euro 3200, but that was 5 years ago.

Jul-14-14  waustad: <perfidious> Thanks for the link. That fills in a gap in my knowledge about how the process works.
Jul-21-14  waustad: She is listed as a member of the Ukrainian olympiad team in the roster they've turned in: http://chess-results.com/tnr140381....
Jul-22-14  notyetagm: <waustad: She is listed as a member of the Ukrainian olympiad team in the roster they've turned in: http://chess-results.com/tnr140381....>

I think the Ukrainians listed her on their team to delay her transfer to the Russian Federation or to delay her eligibility to play for Russia in the Tromsk Olympiad.

There is method to their madness. Yes, they know she is leaving. :-)

Jul-22-14  notyetagm: Does anyone know if Lagno/Lahno is ethnic Russian?

I believe that Karjakin was, a Ukrainian of Russian descent, so his moving to Moscow not just to train but to represent Russia made a lot of sense.

Ok, so she is 1/2 Russian and Russian is her native language. Thanks.

Yes, her last name does not end in -nova, -seva, or -nina.

Jul-29-14  GumboGambit: With shifting borders, countries struggling to break free from Soviet rule, and new countries popping up (primarily in the former Yuogoslavia), it is very common for current Eastern Europeans to have 'mixed' heritage, where both sides have tense relations. (Croat-Serb, Russia-anyone).

It may not be the same as jumping between Israel and Palestine, but going from Ukraine to Russia is going to leave harsh feelings, especially at this point in history.

Well, the current war in Ukraine has clearly worsened the matters between Russia and Ukraine, in both directions. I spent my childhood between 6 and 15 is what is currently the war region (Mariupol it was, to be exact), and have many schholfriends from the region (incuding one living directly on the line of the front in Donetsk). Most have flown, but the directions to <where> they flee shows a lot about who they support. Pro-Westerners tend to flee inside Ukraine (although Russia is closer than any non-fought or not-ponentially-fought part of Ukraine), pro-Russians go to Russia. Some are reluctant to flee at all, fearing revenge from whoever wins the war if they end up fleeing in the "wrong" direction. The discussions aboze the war itself have already broken some families. The longer the war is lasting, the more Russians and Ukrainians start hating each other instead of each other's war-driven governemnts. It takes extreme courage to openly walk with a Russian flag in (the peaceful part of) Ukraine or with the Ukrainian flag in Russia.
