SUSAN POLGAR
(born Apr-19-1969, 56 years old) Hungary
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

GM (and WIM) Zsuzsa (Susan) Polgár was born in Budapest, Hungary, and along with her two younger sisters, Judit Polgar and Sofia Polgar, she was taught chess by her father, Laszlo Polgár. By 1984 she became the top-rated woman chess player in the world. Later that year, FIDE, in a controversial decision, granted 100 rating points to every female player except Zsuzsa.

In 1991, Susan achieved the men's grandmaster title, and later that year, her sister Judit Polgar earned the title as well. She is a FIDE Senior Trainer. In 1996, Susan won the Women's World Championship, but refused to defend her title in 1999 against Jun Xie, because she believed the conditions were unfair. In 2004 she competed in the 36th Chess Olympiad, winning gold medals for points and for the highest performance rating. In total, she has won ten Olympiad medals during her career, and has never lost a single game in any Olympiad. Her highest-ever FIDE rating (2577) was achieved on the January 2005 list. This list also returned her to her position as the number one active female player in the world. In 2005, she broke Andrew D Martin 's 2004 world record by playing 326 opponents in a simultaneous exhibition, with a 309 wins, 14 draws and 3 losses for a 96.93% result.* This record stood for 5 years before being broken by Kiril Georgiev.

Susan lived for many years in New York City, where she ran the Polgár Chess Center (http://www.polgarchess.com). She also resided in Lubbock, Texas, where she served as coach to the Texas Tech University chess team - but has since moved to the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. She is one of the best-selling chess authors worldwide, and she speaks seven languages fluently. She posts at Chessgames as User: Susan Polgar. She is the mother of National Master Tom Polgar-Shutzman.

< Earlier Kibitzing  · PAGE 235 OF 264 ·  Later Kibitzing>
Oct-11-07  RookFile: <whack8888: Also, the fact that Polgar's intial posts here were about how some terrible person has perhaps illegally broken privacy rules is hardly satisfying.>

This was exactly my reaction.

Oct-11-07  Petrosianic: <The sad thing is Sloan didn't get this legally - the case could be dismissed on technicality.>

Even if he did get it legally, the case should be dismissed for lack of factuality. Sloan doesn't just claim that Truong impersonated him, he claims to have suffered damage, inasmuch as before this happened, he was had a "sterling reputation as an investigative reporter", and "was held in the highest regard by the chess community".

That's obviously false. Before the Fake Sam Sloan appeared, the Real Sam Sloan's reputation was in the toilet. And it still is. The damage Sloan is claiming never happened. The low regard he was held in before the Fake Sam Sloan hit the scene is easily provable.

Oct-11-07  RookFile: Many of these posts were pornographic in nature and were posted in a public place where children could read them. To my way of thinking, Sam Sloan's reputation is minor compared to this issue.
Oct-11-07  Whack8888: <Petrosianic> For me, at least, this issue has nothing to do with Sam Sloan, really. I havent really researched into why his reputation is bad, but sentenced for kidnapping a girl gives me a good enough idea.

Also, legally, Sloan's case is ridiculous. Texas Tech?? Come on!

The importance of this issue isnt based on someone's lost reputation, but a member of the USCF board has potentially engaged in these possibly illegal (I dont know much about laws) and definately weird activities.

I thought one of the main reason's to get rid of Sloan was to attract sponsers. His weird figure had scared away potential sponsers, very understandably. But now, as we are supposed to embark on the new golden era of American chess, it turns out the other dude was a creep too!

Of course, this isnt proven yet, and hopefully something comes up that this is not the case, but for me, that is the main issue, the integrity of the current USCF board, and not any damages encured on Sloan or his ridiculous lawsuit.

Oct-11-07  GeauxCool: The IP addresses were made public, posted with their user identities on the USCF website, shortly after Truong criticized Mottershead for the new website design. It may or may not have been a violation of their NDA. Sloan apparently read the post, then later launched his lawsuit.

Top and Bottom of page 1, then onward:
http://www.chessdiscussion.com/phpB...

<Whack8888>Sort through the chessdiscussion website under USCF/FIDE issues. You'll find that an IP address correlated to a Texas address. Texas Tech said that it was not a known IP address.

Here it is: http://www.chessdiscussion.com/phpB...

So what happens if I bring Niro's laptop from New York to Texas Tech? Will the IP address change or just the location recorded on the USCF servers?

- You know Truong's motivation if he did it, was to prevent his wife from sitting on the board with Sloan. He had to knock out his nearest competitor. Does anyone have the results of the election? It would be interesting to see Sloan vs. Truong.

Oct-11-07  benjinathan: I think Sloan got smoked in the election (10th?).

WannaBe: <GeauxCool: ... So what happens if I bring Niro's laptop from New York to Texas Tech?...>

Your IP will change, but your MAC will not. It's like bring a car from NY to Texas, your licence plates will change, but your VIN will not.

Oct-11-07  Whack8888: Thanks for the link, <GeauxCool>!

Honestly, though, reading through it didnt really clarify anything.

If you are refering to my 'Texas Tech??' that was because Motterston, the guy who is giving all the evidence said he has nothing that shows Texas Tech was involved, ie, suing Texas Tech is stupid.

Oct-11-07  GeauxCool: <Rookfile> That's an important issue. If Truong was responsible for such perverted statements, then surely Susan Polgar will have a tougher decision to make than the courts in the months ahead. (And I wonder how many messages from "Susan Polgar" were actually from "Paul Truong"?)

<Whack8888> It appears to be misunderstood.

<Wannabe>Thanks for that!

Oct-11-07  GeauxCool: I see no motive for Truong. He had over 2000 votes, Sloan almost 700.

JointheArmy: Did a little more reading and I think Mottershead found out Truong's IP in a similar process of how I previously described how they would do it.

Brian Mottershead posted this at chessninja.com October 8th 2007

<However, on the 19th, the Fake Ray Gordon made 6 posts on Usenet and these all matched Truong's IP address. A couple of days later Troung went to Mexico City, and Fake Ray Gordon posted from a Mexico City IP address that matched Truong's. That convinced me that Truong was the Fake Sam Sloan. That was the state when I wrote my post in the USCF Issues forum.> <The Usenet evidence, without any support from any USCF forum evidence, shows that the Fake Sam Sloan posted from AOL, a few times from a RoadRunner cable IP address in New York, from a couple of Suddenlink cable IP addresses in Texas starting around the time Paul moved to Texas, and a Mexico City ISP during the World Championship starting around the time when Paul was there.>

It seems Mottershead also might have done this legally(!) since if its true Truong posted on a forum both under his name and a fake Ray Gordon with the same MAC address than I'd assume this is legal as long as he posted under his real name. However, Mottershead says he's convinced its him rather than it is him, which could lead into minor technicality problems later. So he should get a court order first for the ISP to reveal the IP addresses identity. This is to avoid any unnecessary problems in court in the future.

This and the fact that Paul Truong already has a prior history of <my account must have been hacked!> convinces me Truong should just get this over with and confess.

<In the case of Mr. Truong, he has a history of pretending that his actions are not his. The most egregious example is when he created his own AOL site a few years ago, where he claimed that he had a Ph.D., and when confronted with the bogus claim, he said someone had hacked his page and he had no idea how it happened!>

http://christopherfalter.blogspot.c...

I really don't see Polgar/Truong being board members for long.

Now to the really interesting question is when this scandal gets over, will the USCF even be around in the next 5 years? They can't find sponsors as it is, nonetheless, when they have board members exercising what I'd expect trolls on CG to be doing.

Oct-11-07  RookFile: By the way, JoinTheArmy, is that avatar of yours the state of Texas?? Lol... seems pretty appropriate.
Oct-11-07  Rolfo: Who is suing whom? Mr. Sloan suing Polgar/Truong? On what reason, and what to achieve. Just very brief..

WannaBe: Sam Sloan is doing the suing... Something about posts that were 'written' by him, but they are actually written by someone else, blah, blah, blah, blah...

Hopefully that was brief. =)

Oct-11-07  benjinathan: <Rolfo> Sloan is suing Polgar/Truong and the University. He allges that Truong/Polgar made offensive posts to uscf discussion boards in his name during the recent election campaign in order to discredit him in the eyes of the electorate and the world.

While he is seeking monetary damages, it seems to me that what he really wants is to disclose/prove the alleged behaviour in order to force Troung/Polgar to resign form the Board of the USCF.

Oct-11-07  Rolfo: Thx Wannabe, and I see some has left the board of USCF, and some has joined..
Oct-11-07  Rolfo: Thx benji

keypusher: A few legal points, all tentative.

Assuming the evidence re IP addresses, etc. was illegally obtained (I have no idea if it was or not), that should not bar it from being used in a civil suit. It's only the government that is prohibited from using illegally obtained evidence in criminal proceedings.

I looked briefly at the complaint. What a disgusting mess! Here are a few observations about it, for what they're worth.

It's true that Texas Tech is listed as a defendant and Sloan says some uncomplimentary things about it in the body of the complaint, but he doesn't allege specific wrongdoing (besides letting Polgar and Truong use TT computers to post as the Fake Sam Sloan) and he doesn't seem to seek any relief from TT either. So I imagine Texas Tech will get dismissed from the suit pretty quickly, since Sloan didn't really sue it.

I can't speak to most of the claims because they're nonsense (set aside the sale of the New Windsor property?). As someone said on another page, it's a pro se complaint so a judge will read it indulgently. If an attorney filed this, it would be dismissed and disciplinary proceedings would be instituted against the lawyer. But, reading it generously, a judge would probably decide that it states a claim for libel against Polgar and Truong, maybe against a couple of Sloan's other targets.

47 USC s. 223, mentioned in the complaint, is a criminal statute and thus irrelevant to a civil action.

Petrosianic suggests that Sloan's reputation is so bad that it couldn't be made worse -- he's "undefamable." I am sympathetic to this argument, and it has succeeded in a few cases, but I doubt the complaint would be dismissed in toto on that basis.

Oct-11-07  technical draw: As a lawyer recently admitted to the bar (Danny's) and awaiting my credential from the New Hebrides School of Law and Landscaping, I must opine as to the merits of this case. Sloan loses, Susan loses, Truong loses, the USCF loses, only us lawyers win, thank you, nolo contendere.
Oct-11-07  RookFile: You're making me hungry for a Mexican place down the street.
Oct-11-07  Whack8888: <Finally, the question that remains is: how did page2.html get there in the first place? It was first placed there in 2001. Yet your critics did not point out the existence of the page until years later. Assuming one of your critics spoofed the page, what was going on in the intervening years? Why wait so long?>

From the Chris Falter Blog. Again, the tough logical question, "So what you are saying, Mr. Troung, is that Sam Sloan and some of your other enemies, hacked into your website, changed the title so it said you are a Ph. D, then waited for like 4 years to finally point it out!"

Haha! I only wish my enemies were so inept.

Oct-11-07  Phoenix: This whole affair had better not be true. If it is, it'll probably be the death of the USCF.
Oct-11-07  Petrosianic: <Petrosianic suggests that Sloan's reputation is so bad that it couldn't be made worse -- he's "undefamable." I am sympathetic to this argument, and it has succeeded in a few cases, but I doubt the complaint would be dismissed in toto on that basis.>

Well, I'm not a lawyer, I could be wrong there. But it seems like it would be really hard to prove that the Real Sloan lost the election because of the Fake Sloans posting activities. Anybody who knew that the Fake Sloan existed at all would also know what the Real Sloan was like.

Oct-11-07  Ed Trice: I have met with Susan Polgar and Paul Truong in person. I can say this:

Susan's moral compass points to true North 100% of the time. She has the dignity of a diplomat and is a pleasure to be around. Being in her presence is calming in a way. There is no way she is involved in any of this nonsense.

Paul Truong is an energetic and tireless promoter. He's had a very tough climb to get where he is today. His enthusiasm is contagious! Spend 5 minutes with Paul, and you'll feel like taking up jogging again. Paul furnishes so much content for Susan's blogs, handles so many business arrangements for Susan, and has his mind going in 100 different directions generating new ideas that will help chess, that he literally has NO TIME for any such nonsense with Sloan. Negative energy is not what Paul is about. I would say he is incapable of doing what is described.

Sam Sloan is "chess doo doo" and must be scraped from everyone's shoe.

Oct-11-07  dx9293: <Ed Trice> I am curious to see what comes of all of this. I have dealt with some of the principals personally and I can't say I would vouch for any of them...

Not everything is as it appears. NONE of these people are either as good or as bad as the people themselves or others make them seem.
