[what is this?]

Larry Melvyn Evans was born in Manhattan, New York. He achieved the IM title in 1952, and the GM title in 1957. He was US champion five times: 1951 http://graeme.50webs.com/chesschamp..., 1952 http://graeme.50webs.com/chesschamp..., 1961/2 http://graeme.50webs.com/chesschamp..., 1968 http://graeme.50webs.com/chesschamp... and 1980 http://graeme.50webs.com/chesschamp..., the last with Walter Shawn Browne and Larry Mark Christiansen. He won the US Open four times, and was a member or captain of nine Olympiad teams. He was also a prolific chess author and columnist.

Evans was also known for his long association with Robert James Fischer. He edited and wrote the game introductions for Fischer's classic anthology My 60 Memorable Games, and also served as Fischer's second during the 1972 candidates cycle 2.

Nov-01-05  suenteus po 147: Evans always has great quotes by Fischer at the ready. I was recently looking at this game: Taimanov vs Fischer, 1971 that Evans annotated in one of his books, and he explained that Taimanov had an easy draw with 46.Qf4+, but because he was so demoralized from losing his last four games he blundered with 46.Rxf6?? Taimanov, according to Evans, dismissed the loss as the result of nervous exhaustion coupled with a migraine. Evans puckishly added Fischer's rejoinder, which was "I never beat a healthy opponent."
Nov-03-05  RonB52734: <Resignation Trap> The game you posted on p. 3 of this thread: You're kidding, right? Is that published somewhere?
Nov-17-05  Resignation Trap: <RonB52734> That game was printed in the booklet of the 1946 US Open in Pittsburgh. It was the last round, probably nothing at stake, and they were just happy to go home. At least, that's what I think.
Nov-18-05  RonB52734: Thanks <RT>.

This must be an example of Evans taking a 100-year-old witticism - I think this one was by Amos Burn - and putting it into the mouth of a contemporary player to take up column space.

The stock of the magazine drops even further....

offramp: In a Usenet group, Sam Sloan writes, today:

"All or almost all chess columns to be cut from Chess Life

When the news came that the Larry Evans chess column was being cancelled, naturally we assumed that it was a political move, because several times in past years Evans has been fired by various politicians, only to be reinstated later.

However, this was followed with the news that the Rohde column had been cancelled too.

From reading the BINFOS it appears that the new editor backed by Paul Hoffman has decided to cancel all or almost all of the monthly columns and replace them with feature articles.

This might be a good move. For example, can anyone think of any other magazine on any subject that places such great reliance on monthly columns?

However, I wonder: Without the regular columnists, will there be enough good material to fill up the magazine?

Sam Sloan."

offramp: On a Usenet group yesterday Larry Parr wrote:
"EVANS CHESS LIFE COLUMN CANCELLED

By Larry Parr

New Chess Life editor Dan Lucas informed GM Larry
Evans that he would be cancelling the 5-time U.S. champion's question-and-answer column in Chess Life. The final edition of his column will appear in the May issue.

Editor Lucas said that he was acting based on
recommendations in Paul Hoffmann's lavish $50,000
redesign plans and, in any event, he or Mr. Hoffman
believed that the Q &A format "has played itself out."

Over the last many years, the two most popular
columns in Chess Life, as measured by reader surveys, have been "Larry Evans on Chess" and Andy Soltis'
"Chess to Enjoy." Thousands of readers have
vouchsafed their opinion about what they enjoy in the pages of CL. Evans and Soltis always were at the top.

The decision to cancel GM Evans' column comes,
quite frankly, as no surprise. That was always in the cards, the moment the costly redesign was announced.
GM Soltis' column, which is seldom controversial given its intent, will remain. The magazine cannot afford
to lose both of its most popular writers.

Editor Lucas' explanation that the Q &A format
"has played itself out" really will not do, though he may honestly believe it.

Question and answer formats never play
themselves out in hobbyist magazines. There is no
doubt that after a decent interval -- or a not so
decent one, in any event -- the format will return.
The only issue is who has been selected by the
politicians to replace GM Evans who never spouts
the party line.

Mar-22-06  whiskeyrebel: I'm disgusted. There'd better be a good explanation for this..besides the likely scenario that the space and $$$ will go to somebody's hand-picked buddy. Larry Evans breathes life into the game which is more than can be said about a huge regular portion of Chess Life which on the whole has been a cold hamburger for years. I'm not against change..it's overdue. Sacking Larry Evans is like yanking out one of the last remaining solid teeth in your rotting mouth. It'd be like an unprofitable restaurant eliminating it's most popular menu item. If there are writers lined up capable of topping Evans column quality wise, let's SEE 'EM. Where are they? Who are they? It's a bad day for American chess...

Joshka: Don't understand this move by USCF. <Whiskeyrebel> Loved your "last tooth" analogy:-)...Larry's article's have always been the first pages I turn too when my magazine arrives. GM Polgar's running a close 2nd. If they want to add more feature stories fine, but why cut Larry's? Maybe he wanted to do something special on Bobby, and was told not to. With all the info here at <chessgames.com> and other sources on the internet, the magazine is not what it was at one time for me, anyway. I now just mostly look to see if there are any tournaments on the weekends I have off. But Larry's articles will be missed.

WannaBe: <ray keene> I'd have to think twice, but the life membership is a 'bargain', (provide I live long, and prosper :-) and without a membership, it's virtually next to impossible to participate in sanctioned/rated tournaments in U.S. Decisions, decisions...
Mar-22-06  suenteus po 147: Evans fired? That's too bad. I always enjoyed his column, all else aside. Just another reason not to renew my USCF membership next year....

ray keene: <wannabe> yes the uscf has its members over a barrel re the tournaments and ratings-which means they can foist anodyne rubbish onto the readers thru the magazine without being subject to commercial pressures-it all sounds vaguely stalinist to me--however i fully comprehend the position of those who cant do without the tournaments and ratings and just have to swallow the pill--as i said the solution wd be to invite gm evans to continue his column here --only on a more regular basis -perhaps with a subscription element involved to make it cost effective

WannaBe: My most sincere apologies, it was Larry D Evans whom I saw down in San Diego during US Champ. not Larry Melvyn Evans. I apologize for any/all confusions this may have caused.
Mar-22-06  wharfrat: Good riddance as far as I am concerned. Evans has been recycling the same tripe for the 30+ years I have been reading Chess Life and he was never one to let facts get in the way of a "good" story.
Mar-22-06  HannibalSchlecter: I guess it goes to show there is nobody that pleases everybody.
Mar-22-06  Trouble: I think the biggest problem in US chess is that everyone realizes that few US chess players can hold a candle to the best players in the world. People here love a fighter and a champion, that is what is popular that is what sells ala Kasparov. Nakamura may or may not fulfill that role, so far he hasn't scored well in any major international tournament to my knowledge. THe same goes for Kamsky, until he proves himself in the next WC no one will really give him credit as a serious contender. Another problem is that the adminstration tends to think that pandering to the lowest common denominator is what makes something popular. Evans and Soltis have great columns, but they are popular more for the human interest aspects rather than the chess. I think most of the chess columns are good, but none are at a really high level. Instead of pandering to 1300-1600 players, why not include a couple columns made mainly for 2000 and up? Make it very hard, very in depth and very accurate. Say you take the position in Leko-Aronian Linares where a novelty gets played. Then disect every main line and subvariation for say 6 or 7 moves. That would make for opening analysis bordering on world class. I'm sure plenty of US players would love to go to tournaments armed with that knowledge ready to rip the **** out of anyone unprepared. At worst it will teach the 1600 crew that to be a real player you can't treat positions superficially, and having an incisive and objective mind is what really brings in the points. To make chess popular in the US we don't need more candy coating...adults and kids in the US can get their 'stupidity' fix from watching television or playing video games. People play chess to achieve... let's make the magazine reflect that. If anything will motivate people to play better chess I think this will.

WannaBe: <Trouble:...in the next WC no one will really give him credit as a serious contender.>

I couda been a con'nder, I couda been somebody!! :-)

The problem with aiming for 2000 and up players, is that they probably, PROBABLY, don't need the article, if so, it will be too indepth for the rest of us.

It would be something similiar to reading AMA journal to a first year biology student. But I do see your point, the focus of USCF and possibly Chess Life magazine is to educate the newcomers/intermediate level players... And of course, promote chess within U.S.
