LAWRENCE TRENT
(born Apr-28-1986, 39 years old) United Kingdom

[what is this?]

Lawrence Trent showed an early talent for chess, winning the British championship for Under 11, Under 12, and Under 13. He was awarded the IM title in 2005. He took time off from chess to attend Lancaster University. He returned to competitive play for a bit and then moved to Mexico to teach chess to children. Trent then took another break from chess in favor of fulltime employment. He reconnected with chess again by way of live commentary on major events such as London Chess Classic (2009), World Cup (2013), and Anand - Carlsen World Championship (2013).

Apr-02-13  Hongkonger: Yes, agree with all the above, Lawrence did a brilliant job - especially on such long days. I particularly appreciated his candour when he admitted to not knowing what was going on!

perfidious: <Eggman: ....(Trent) totally deserves to be on TV if chess makes it back on the Tube. Much better than the comically melodramatic Danny King and Maurice Ashley.>

Well do I remember being present for the semi and final stages of the New York Grand Prix in summer 1994, with King and Ashley as commentators.

King was actually not bad, but to his every assertion, Ashley's response was 'Indeed'.

Unimpressive, <indeed>.

Apr-02-13  Boxer123: Will Lawrence be on the scene again (via internet) for the World Championship?

SteinitzLives: I found Trent to be very entertaining, and not obsessed with the details of the games and willing to find silliness or human interest issues to fill the down times. He could re-focus quickly when a game heated up.

A real winning chess personality, he kept it interesting and fun without taking himself at all seriously. Some of the GM's he interviewed could take a lesson from him.

Apr-02-13  Tomlinsky: Could Short & Trent be the Laurel & Hardy of chess!? Top notch job Lawrence, you may have found your Friedrich Nietzsche.

Apr-28-13  ELCABALLO238: Yes I agree, great job Mr. Trent!! However, I don't think he needs to drink coffee, since he was getting plenty of caffeine from drinking Red Bull all day...LOL

Sneaky: Trent was certainly tireless during the candidates tournament. I'm sure he has a bright future ahead of him in the field of chess commentating if that's what he wants to pursue.

Nov-09-13  SoUnwiseTheKnight B4: The Lawrence Trent version of the drinking game. Swig it down every time he says he has no clue or idea whats going on in the game. Better for tournaments.

Troller: Trent is not only a commentator, currently he is participating in a GM tournament in Denmark.

Mar-13-14  Shams: Lawrence Trent has bagged his second GM norm after a fine performance in the HSK (Hamburg Chess Club) tournament in Germany.

Mar-17-14  waustad: Congrats on the second norm! Here's the chessbase article on the result: http://de.chessbase.com/post/ftacni...
Apr-28-14  waustad: 28 was a good age, if I can recall that far back. Happy b'day!
Oct-13-14  waustad: He was in some form for the commentary for the Millionaire tourney. If it had been live TV in the puritanical US he might have gotten into trouble. Perhaps he had a bit more of a nip before the final rounds than Arianne Caoili or Robert Hess.
Oct-20-14  Mudphudder: I found him quite entertaining during his commentary for the MC open. I hope he continues to commentate these big tournaments.

Domdaniel: Trent has started with 2/2 in the Bunratty Classic. Is his final GM norm coming up?
Feb-19-15  SimonWebbsTiger: 2.5/3, <Dom>.

One hopes so. He said before he went from the chess24 coverage that if not in this half year, he is giving up chasing it.

It's heartwarming to see people still using the German letter "Eszett"

OK, it was 8 years ago. But still!
