CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success. May-18-14  Rookiepawn: The notion of "drug" is slippery. Something that can alter your performance? Well, that applies to alcohol, caffeine, sugar... In fact just eating anything can alter your performance. Your body's physiology changes with anything you add to it.

What about playing while puffing a joint? Quite an experience.

perfidious: <HMM> In Kansas, used to be one could only get 3.2 beer, being a dry state and all. Even today in states such as Kentucky and Mississippi, there are dry counties.

Did you know that the owner of McSorley Ale pub in New york was not allowed to enter the pub before the 1970's?

HeMateMe: You can't mean that the entire state of Kansas is dry? Do you just mean that the supermarkets don't sell booze, or are you saying the state has no liquor stores?

Why wouldn't the owner of McSorley's be allowed to enter his own pub? Was he secretly a Republican? Was he an IRA financer?

Jul-11-14  john barleycorn: <HeMateMe: ...

The owner was a lady and in the 1960's ladies were not allowed there.

HeMateMe: Oh, that makes sense. I thought there was a guy named McSorley. Maybe she could sneak in the back way? It's a college bar now, not really a neighborhood or Irish stronghold, anymore. The New School has a large dormitory four blocks away, and the NYU dorms are within walking distance. The last time I went there, and there was room enough to fart was back in the 80s.
Jul-11-14  john barleycorn: < HeMateMe:> I was there in 1994 still have the mug. That was when I heard the story. When womans lib movement set in things changed. The day it was open to women there was a large queue. And the lady passed by them all which caused some noise until she finally said: "That is my pub and I am going to be the first woman to enter"
