Nov-24-05  blingice: He seems to beat/draw most of the famous people he plays, but he has a 39% win rate.
Feb-18-07  Whitehat1963: I've got something for this guy.
Jun-14-07  whiteshark: So these are the famous <Whitehead> twins

Paul Whitehead

Sep-27-09  Agent Bouncy: If Paul and Jay were twins, their poor mom was in labor for 16 months. Ughhhh.
Oct-12-09  Birthday Boy: Happy Birthday!!!Jay E Whitehead!!!
Oct-12-09  WhiteRook48: Happy birthday!
Oct-04-11  Resignation Trap: According to what I've heard, Jay died of cancer just yesterday. Only a few days before his 50th birthday. I hope this rumor is false.

HeMateMe: Isn't this the guy who broke all records for USCF rated games played per year? Every club that had a quad, every night, he was there.

If this is the same fellow, the New York Times did a story on him a few years ago. He was working as a porter at a blue chip law firm. He'd set up conference rooms for meetings, help the caterers, maybe help paralegals set up the signing trays in the conference rooms.

The story mentioned that he was "still hoping to get the GM title, but getting into his forties, he knew the odds were getting bad."

Of course, Ben Fingold finally got the title, a year or so ago so, it can be done. Jay Whitehead belongs to that group of the Joel Benjamin, Max Dlugy era. Local New York City players who thrived in the 80s, who found enough tournaments here to stay active.

R.I.P.

paulalbert: <HeHateMe> You're thinking of IM Jay Bonin.
Oct-04-11  TheFocus: I remember reading about Whitehead when he was in the US Junior Championship; he signed his score-sheets <Winhead> or <Titanium Cranium>.

LIFE Master AJ: I used to know Jay Whitehead ... saw him at a few tourneys; (an) extremely strong player. [Does he even play chess anymore?]

LIFE Master AJ: Be nice if they were a picture here. If nothing else, maybe someone could find one in an old chess magazine ...
Oct-05-11  Resignation Trap: A little more information by Dennis Monokroussos: http://www.thechessmind.net/blog/20...
Oct-11-11  Eastfrisian: Jay Whitehead died of cancer on 4. October 2011. Source: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Wh...
Oct-11-11  AnalyzeThis: Sorry to hear that.
Oct-11-11  JustAFish: There's a really interesting picture of Jay Whitehead- complete with frilly shirt and choker- in Jeremy Silman's book "The Reassess Your Chess Workbook."
Oct-11-11  Prugno: Hoping to distract from the tragedy of his premature death with a little pun, I would like to point out that Mr. Whitehead's surname is the exact translation of "Capablanca". His style, however, looks more aggressive than the Cuban's...
Oct-11-11  Agent Bouncy: "Capa" means cape or cloak, not head.
Oct-11-11  I play the Fred: <Cabezablanca> would be correct, I think.

Jan-07-12  Caissanist: The US Junior was apparently not the only tournament where he used pseudonyms, there is also this: Withead vs S Biyiasas, 1984 .

GrahamClayton: Whitehead is possibly the only US player to have finished ahead of Garry Kasparov in a tournament, finishing 2nd in the 1977 World U-17 championship (Kasparov finished 3rd).

HeMateMe: Thats a great trivia question, regarding Kasparov.
Mar-13-12  esundel: i remember the whitehead twins quite well. i drew against paul once in a friendly time odds blitz game. pity about jay, i hadn't heard till now. anyone know how paul is faring?
