Jan-05-05 | | acirce: <if not by number of wins, how would you have broken ties after that?> Not. What's wrong with co-winners? Sure, if you absolutely MUST have one and only one winner, and there is no time for a tiebreak mini-match or something, you would have to use some arbitrary criterion, like most wins, or fewest losses, or one of fasting's suggestions, or just flip a coin. |
Jan-05-05 | | iron maiden: <fasting> I think so. Actually, if they really wanted to encourage fighting chess, they could break ties based on average number of moves per draw. |
Jan-05-05 | | acirce: Yeah, would be cool to see them play out drawn positions 70-80 moves more than needed. Or constantly be repeating moves just to make the games longer. Even <tpstar>'s idea comes to use again: A Lehtinen vs T Simola, 1995 ;-) |
Jan-05-05 | | square dance: i think if a player goes undefeated, but finishes equal first, then he should win the tiebreak, after that i think head to head and/or most wins makes sense. for the record though i think sharing first is ok. |
Jan-05-05 | | csmath: I think the one who has most wins should win the tournament, that is what makes sense to me. That requires more energy than GM draws. |
Jan-06-05 | | iron maiden: <i think if a player goes undefeated, but finishes equal first, then he should win the tiebreak> Wasn't something like that in place for AVRO 1938? I've always wondered why Keres was declared the winner even though Fine had more victories. |
Jan-06-05 | | vonKrolock: Well, the form of a tiebreak decision is always accorded before the start, so as part of the play, it must have its rule obeyd - of course that some distortions would occur sometimes - here the case is not so grave, as Shirov final score was disturbed by the loss of a whole point against one of the tailenders, so the quality of his score is evidently higher than that of Nielsen - in others tourneys, we can find really serious distortions: i know one instance where two players tied for first in points, and one was awarded the "title" in Sonnenborn-Berger system (it arrived that the 'milesimes' - it was a Swiss - resulted in a tie too) Well, but it arrived also that in this case the second was UNDEFEATED, and moreover WON the direct encounter against the first placed. Well, even whith those paradoxical elements, the phenomenon have an explanation: two draws against tailenders when the oponent scored two wins in front of oposition of the same rank surely would produce such a result... Khalifman was the only player that dont' scored a sigle win in Drammen, but i will not hurry to call his acting lastimable, as his games have a high moves number average: So games worth thew deepest attention, i believe |

Jan-24-05 | | zynoble1: how tall is this dude?? |
Jan-24-05 | | Willem Wallekers: <how tall is this dude?? >
Rather tall, maybe 190 cm.
He looks typical Scandinavian.
Why do you ask? |
Jan-24-05 | | zynoble1: i read somewhere that he is called "Great Dane" and it said that he was one tall dude.
it got my attention. |
Jan-25-05 | | Willem Wallekers: Great Dane suits him well. |
May-25-05 | | soberknight: This man has an excellent Nielsen rating, even though I've never seen him on TV. |
Jul-04-05 | | suenteus po 147: Any comments or predictions on how he will fair at Dortmund this year? I don't know too much about this player. |
Jul-11-05 | | Poulsen: Well, he was considered one of the most talented youth players in Denmark since Curt Hansen (who won the junior-WCh in 1984). Now he has matured into a pretty good GM. His strenght is his opening preps and the tactical play, while he still lacking somewhat in endgame technic - but, hey, who doesn't now a days?! I for one could wish for him a better figthing spirit. Sometimes he looks too much on his opponents rating. And sometimes he plays just to win a few lousy ratingpoints i.s.o. winning tournaments!! |
Jul-11-05 | | Poulsen: He will do well on Dortmund, but he will be much too impressed by his opponents to win the tournament. He could, if he would just put his hart into it ... |
Mar-13-06 | | LluviaSean: I like this guy already. His is the only picture wearing a nice smile. |
Mar-23-06 | | sagahelten: P.H. Nielsen is doing pretty well at the Amber Tournament. At least in the rapid part of it... |
Mar-23-06 | | DCP23: <Willem Wallekers>: <<how tall is this dude?? > Rather tall, maybe 190 cm. > 198 cm actually, or 6' 6". |
Mar-23-06 | | aw1988: I believe he is 6 8. |
Mar-24-06 | | pazzed paun: anybody buy his book on the accelerated dragon? comments? |
Mar-24-06 | | sagahelten: At Amazon PH Nielsens book gets rave reviews from 6 customers. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/18... |
May-24-06 | | Maatalkko: Happy Birthday! |
Sep-07-06 | | Poulsen: Peter Heine Nielsen has just won the 3rd Open International Chess Tournament of Kalamaria - together with Radoslaw Wojtaszek - both scoring 7½/9 p. A good result, sure, but once again he showed lack of fighting spirit - as he was the sole leader after 8 rounds, but - once again - settled for a draw in the last round. The same happened in Drammen International Chess Festival (2004) - and all that people remember is, that Shirov won that tournament. Why don't you follow the footsteps of Bent Larsen - and fight!! |
Sep-07-06 | | Larsker: From what I read, it was hot. Just like Larsen, he doesn't like that when playing chess. |
Sep-07-06 | | Poulsen: Ok, this may be a factor to consider. |
