YELENA DEMBO
(born Dec-08-1983, 41 years old) Russia (federation/nationality Greece)

[what is this?]

Yelena Dembo was born in Penza, Russia. At only 3 years and 9 months, she played chess in an under-13 tournament and became rated. When she was 7, her family emigrated to Israel, where her parents opened a chess academy. She was Israeli champion among the girls five times, including once in the category under 20 years. She became a WGM in 2001 and Men's IM in 2003.

She is an eight time medalist of World and European Youth and Women Championships, including winning the first place in Girl's Under 20 European Rapid Championship in 2002. She won the Bykova's Memorial (women's WGM event) in December 2004. She won the bronze medal in Women's European Individual Championship in Moldova 2005 and scored 6.5/11 (TPR 2464) at the 12th European Individual Championship (2011), which included a 4/8 (+2 -2 =4) result against her 8 GM opponents in that event. She qualified for the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2012), but lost in the first round to Georgian IM Nino Khurtsidze.

Dembo made her first men's GM norm in the Hamburg open, 2005.

Mar-02-06  Yelena Dembo: Hi <Ron>, I prepare for a tournament in my house, I analyse my own openings and the openings of possible opponents, if I know them. I wouldnt want to tell more about my preparation - it is a secret of each player.
Mar-02-06  Yelena Dembo: Hi <mandar>, Thanks for the invitation but unfortunately in the coming months I will be very very busy. I will play in European women's Championship in April and in the Olimpiad in end of May. Hopefully I will have time later!
Mar-02-06  Yelena Dembo: Hi <Georgie Dubb>, I know several Dembos who are not relatives of mine, but this one is new to me:)
Mar-10-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Our very own <Yelena Dembo> is participating in the Women's World Chess Championships!

Best of luck to you, <Yelena>!

Mar-28-06  Dim Weasel: <I play sometimes on ICC and Playchess> Miss Dembo, I noticed you have also started playing on GameKnot. Very good!
Apr-11-06  Edwin Meyer: I just lost 940 chessbucks because your game against Peptan ended in a draw :-(

cu8sfan: <Edwin Meyer> Please, it's not her fault. And discussions about the bookie game should be kept to the Chessgames Bookie chessforum or personal forums.
Apr-11-06  Edwin Meyer: I didn't mean anything negative by it... It was ment more joke-like. As in me being the joker for losing 940 chessbucks.
Apr-11-06  Zebra: <GM Yelena Dembo>. I believe you now live in Greece? I lived there some years ago when it was still an "emerging" chess-playing country (with just two new GMs, Skebris and Kotronias). Now it seems to be becoming quite a force. What are your impressions on the chess scene there?
Apr-11-06  Dres1: I dont think miss Dembo is a GM quite yet
Apr-11-06  Zebra: Sorry, I should have said WGM.
Apr-20-06  Yelena Dembo: <Zebra> what can I say? Chess is not popular here unfortunately but there are definately many very good players!
Apr-20-06  Zebra: That is pretty much as I remember it - small numbers, but enthusiastic and knowledgable. I thought with recent good results it might have caught on a bit more.

Speaking of good results, congratulations on yours!

Apr-20-06  lentil: yelena: just out of curiosity: what was your score in your first tournament (at age 3.75 yr) and what was your rating?
Apr-20-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <Chess is not popular [in Greece] unfortunately but there are definately many very good players!>

Many Greeks prefer the game of Tavli (Greek backgammon) over chess. I guess it's because the rules are more simple and you don't need your brains so much. :)

May-01-06  Yelena Dembo: <lentil> Unfortunately I dont remember my score:)) but I won the event and my Russian rating became 1500!
May-01-06  Gypsy: <Yelena Dembo: ... but I won the event and my Russian rating became 1500!> Holly cow (pardon the language), 1500 at 3.75 age!?
May-04-06  Yelena Dembo: Everything is possible if you study correctly for 1.5 years till that!
May-04-06  hitman84: <Yelena Dembo>Hello nice to see you back!

There are lot of teenage GM's nowadays
Is chess suited more for a young mind ?

Its sometimes dissappointing to hear when GM's say you need to have some title before a certain age or its not worth playing chess. What is your take on this ?

May-04-06  dakgootje: <Everything is possible if you study correctly for 1.5 years till that!> Yes, but still..at that age...
May-04-06  TIMER: To start chess at 2! I thought that 5 was early ( I started at 7/8).

I think that you could start taking chess seriously later in life and still become an international master or grandmaster if you have the talent, time, energy, and temperament. But perhaps your chances of becoming a really top player would start to dwindle. I would like to think not though ! Korchnoi is an example of a player going strong in his 70s, but he did get quite high up as a young man though.

May-04-06  dakgootje: At what age one could say youve got really talent? I mean, there are some persons, like the teenager-GM's of nowadays, who start early and become very good like at the moment they begin. but besides those there are the persons who were just quite at ordinary lvl, and then at some time eg at 30 they become very good, is that still talent, but then just in an other way? As even for those who become very good at 30, its still like a gift even though it wasnt noticed earlier on... so what is the definition of talent or is it too subjective to make an definition for...
May-04-06  TIMER: <dakgootje> Talent is independant of age. I think that child prodigies get too much attention and I would like to see someone taking up chess properly in their 30s rise in the same manner, but unfortunately there would be much less interest in them. But it would be a great story.
May-04-06  dakgootje: <there would be much less interest in them.> True, when there is a 10-year old child its spectacular when it beats a much older player eg 20 years old, who maybe plays for much longer without too much talent in the game. But if there is a 30-year old player, who plays for like 2 months and he beats the same 20-year old player, there wont be very many people who would be interested as it seems less brilliant even though the 30-year old indeed also plays for a very short period...

Maybe talent indeed is independant of age, but the interest of people for other peoples certain talents does depend on the other persons age.

May-07-06  Yelena Dembo: Sorry guys, unfortunately I dont have time to answer on any questions now as I am finishing to write my second book which will most likely be titled "Conversation with a Proffesional Trainer - Methods of Positional Play"! This book will contain many very useful examples on all positional basics! There are already 70 people waiting for it:)) You will be able to see more info about it on my website - www.yelenadembo.com soon!
