This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

<<<<<<< MAJOR CHESS SITES <<>>>>>>>>>

<< Correspondence chess <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  Tabanus: California Birth Index: 30 Sep 1967 in San Francisco. 13 Feb 1967 is a certain Daniel Palmer Freeman, probably still living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

I have read it Annie. I checked a few things, her story seems right.

Aug-08-18  zanzibar: Thanks <Tiggler> (+<Annie K> and <Tab>), I thought I was the only one who cared about the issue.

<BTW> - Tiggler, <CG> needs people like you now, more than ever.

Aug-08-18  thegoodanarchist: <Annie K.: All the comments have been noted, with thanks.

I confirm that <sneaky sqeeky> is indeed Daniel's mother.

There's something I want to share with everybody here, that she said to me:

<He was Daniel to me too.>

I think this will mean a lot to many of us. I know it made all the difference to me.>

Indeed! "Daniel" is more than just an alias. He was Daniel to us on chessgames.com, so yes, it makes a difference.

  Diademas: I'm not trying to be cute, but this whole bizarre thing is starting to look like one of the craziest Holiday Present Hunt ever.

Someone other than anonymous mothers with strange claims and people saying they are in charge for then never to be seen again needs to step up.

I'm starting to think Daniel is alive and laughing his head off over all this.

Aug-09-18  zanzibar: <Annie K> I've offered <sqeeky> my account, in order to avoid some of the the absurdness on <Daniel>'s page, if possible.

Are you in contact with her? Could you perhaps facilitate/educate her about <CG> membership/features.

Certainly she deserves a premium account.

  OhioChessFan: <Diademas> I have been thinking the same thing, but more like, is it even possible that.........

Anyway, life and death are rarely tidy and never seem to be as neatly manicured as a typical sitcom where you have a problem presented and fixed in 30 minutes.

Aug-10-18  takchess: Annie,
As of yet Kevin has not reached out to me about the Puzzles. I am going to post some suggested puzzles by day of the week in my forum. Seems to be the best way to pass them on at the moment. I have a number of sources to collect them from. If you or anyone have suggestions for Saturday or Sunday Puzzles,please let me know . I could use some help on those ! Cheers,
Jim
Aug-10-18  sceptic: <AnnieK> A time saving way to take care of POTD for now would be to find the POTD for this date in 2012, which would have been the same day of the week, and recycle it. A simple script could then recycle all the puzzles from then on in order. The days of the week will stay in sync until 29 Feb, 2020.

  OhioChessFan: <Annie> I know people are sort of expecting you to lead the parade here, undeservedly so, but there's a lot that has gone on here for so many years on auto-pilot that people have come to expect it. I know you didn't exactly raise your hand and say "I'll fix this" but people are sorta, kinda, thinking you did. Really, there's nobody to appeal to, you and <Sargon> are about it, so that's just how it is. Hope you don't get discouraged and hope you don't think people are expecting more from you than you've promised or can handle. Not sure if any of this makes sense. But I've been thinking about it...

Aug-10-18  Alien Math: One reason why Patience are needed in situations when another person takes over and needing their computer, it could take between two to three weeks.
Aug-10-18  zanzibar: Daniel Freeman (kibitz #1017)

I think I disagree with it not being an urgent issue. She's 8000 meters up on Everest without a sherpa, as far as I can tell.

Aug-10-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: Is there anyway you can stop 3 or 4 people posting on Daniel's player page??? I think he deserves better than this. There's the usual vile people saying horrible things. I don't know who the hell's in charge right now but If you have the power you should really stop them. SMH.

  Annie K.: <Sargon> is back. :)
Aug-10-18  jith1207: <Zanzibar> : <ss> is fine, she has already seen and understood how passionate the real consumers of this site are and how unruly it could get. Your offer is generous and appreciate it. I think it's time to let them take their time as they would like to.

Yes, <Sargon> is back, and in a fitting manner. This site is in good hands. Hopefully, everyone who really were concerned could step back and relax while those, who are putting their every second into getting this site back to normalcy, do his/her job.

Aug-10-18  Tiggler: <Annie K.: <Sargon> is back.>

Whether this is good news or not remains to be seen: I am not the only one who was quite turned off by his insulting message.

Aug-11-18  jith1207: You take it as insulting if you have done anything wrong, otherwise it is not meant for you. He clearly cannot be bothered to address every one and be politically correct.

About time this website doesn't have to be coddled like a kindergarten classroom.

Aug-11-18  Tiggler: <jith1207>: <About time this website doesn't have to be coddled like a kindergarten classroom>

Or spoken to like 4th graders. Talk is cheap: we'll see.

An apology from him would have gone over well by all those of us to whom he apparently was not talking, according to you.

Aug-11-18  JimNorCal: I was relieved to see Sargon post.
I see that some respected old timers have, shall we say, ruffled feathers. While I see their point, I suggest all taking a deep breath and letting things work out. See if healing occurs.
Aug-11-18  jith1207: <Tiggler> over-analyzing <Sargon>'s tone, intent and content of the post is not going to benefit anyone. There are a lot of groups of people in site who would come up and say, that could have been worded differently for them to feel better.

A week ago, concern was whether this site could survive legally and technically. A day ago, the concern was whether the person who had taken in charge would ever come back to address the proceedings. Is today's concern about how he could have made everyone feel better?

While i agree with your opinion that saying so would have made us feel not directed at by that post, we also need to understand that this website doesn't have a PR person, a HR person, a social media person, a collaborator, a technical expert, a support person, a grievance manager, etc., Daniel was all those people. Replacing him is impossible. As in life, we need to understand the loss and learn to love the way it could be managed fairly. If it is not fair by any means, then we would have reason to voice any grievances.
