| Mar-01-18 | | WinKing: <Fusilli: No takers for the puzzle? Hint: it's beautiful, and every single black piece is involved.> Nice puzzle <Fusilli>. Had to cheat a little moving the pieces around by hand on my board here. I should have been able to figure it out in my head. I won't put the solution here since I didn't get the solution fair & square.
The solution is elegant.
Hope all has been going well for you <Fusilli>. :) |

 | | OhioChessFan: I am very limited in my posting, but I did work the puzzle out. Qxf2 is the beginning of a nice forced sequence. The lovely Bishop check at the end to force the King away from the Rook is a nice, light touch. FWIW, Rxf2 seems good enough to win also. |

 | | OhioChessFan: I am okay with the scoring as is. If you demanded I make some changes, I think I'd say: The disparity in being over vs. under is a bit annoying. I want to scream every time I miss a 10 and am stuck with a 2 when I guess one move over the game result. I don't know if I do that more than everyone else or I just don't notice when it happens to other people, but it seems to bite me a lot lately. Much like the current dustup on the Wesley So page, the current method of treating the same scores as only one place is a bit disconcerting, eg, 3 people guess 1/2 40, that hits, but there are still a second and third under awarded. Both are fine. The first impacts your strategy, and the second is a concession to how hard the contest is. I'm inclined to not change it since it ain't broken. If I did change anything, it would be those. |

 | | Fusilli: <OCF> <WinKing> Indeed, Qxf2+ is crushing, and that's what black played. I saw the puzzle in a 1992 issue of Chess Life at the Nashville Chess Center (an issue with a drawing of Tal, who had just died, on the cover). |

...Qxf2+ 2.Rxf2 Re1+!! 3.Nxe1 Rxe1+ 4.Rf1 Be3+ and mate next move. |

 | | Fusilli: <thegoodanarchist> Yes, that's how the game continued. All the way to mate, if I am not mistaken. |

 | | OhioChessFan: **Let the Picking Begin**
Welcome to the Candidates 2018 Moves Prediction Contest. This contest involves picking a game result (1-0 1/2 or 0-1) and the number of moves in the game. As an example, if in the first round game you think Aronian with White will draw Ding in 40 moves, your entry would say: Aronian - Ding 1/2 40
While it is a bit more complicated than the game prediction contest hosted by <GoldenExecutive> it isn't <that> much more complicated. I think my profile as written by <chessmoron> does a pretty good job explaining how things work. A few odds and ends. Scoring mistakes occasionally happen. Let <chessmoron> know, on this forum. Quickly. It can seem intimidating to new players, but no worries. Feel free to ask questions. I will point out the scoring system (in my profile) is heavily weighted toward being under, and not over, the actual number of moves. |
