<Format>:

[player]-[player] [result] [# of MOVES]

==4 Different Scoring Methods==

Standard Moves Ranker (1st place-Over[3pts], 1st place-Under [7pts], Exact [10pts])

Bonus Ranker (3rd place-Over[1pts],2nd place-Over[2pts],3rd place-Under [5pts], 2nd place-Under [6pts]

Standard Moves/Bonus Ranker [Add all to together]

1st place Ranker [how many 1st place you have in Standard Moves Ranker]

For example:

<Note: Participants 3, 4, and 5 are predicated on nobody scoring an exact as Participant 2 did. If someone hits an exact, the closest score under and over will score the points for second place.>

Actual Game: [player]-[player] 0-1 45

Participant 1: [player]-[player] 1/2 45
Participant 2: [player]-[player] 0-1 45
Participant 3: [player]-[player] 0-1 44
Participant 4: [player]-[player] 0-1 43
Participant 5: [player]-[player] 0-1 46

Participant 1: No points even though 45 is correct. Results must be correct. If Result is wrong and moves # is correct...you get no points whatsoever

Participant 2: 10 pts rewarded for correct Result/moves #

Participant 3: 7 pts rewarded for closest under (1st-Under) to 45 moves

Participant 4: 6 pts rewarded for the 2nd closest under (2nd-Under) to 45 moves.

Participant 5: 3 pts rewarded closest OVER(1st-OVER) to 45 moves.

Again, the description of Participant 3, 4, and 5 are based on there being no exact prediction as made by Participant 2.

<IF> there is an exact or an under closest, the highest scoring over participant will be 2nd over. The second closest over will be 3rd over. The <ONLY> time there will be a first over is if there is no exact or under winner.

Apr-28-18  WinKing: Not bad <Penguincw> you only forgot to add 1pt. to <Golden Executive>'s score. He had 100 pts.. You just added the 'Moves + Bonus Ranker' wrong.

Penguincw: Ah thanks for that <WinKing>. To double check my work, I did make the correction on my unofficial version, but not on this one.

But anyhow, congrats to <SwitchingQuylthulg> for the triple crown this time, and <Golden Executive> for stopping a 2nd consecutive quadruple crown. Congrats to all the other medalists.

Thanks to <chessmoron> and <OhioChessFan> for hosting and scorekeeping for at least 1 round. Thanks to <Switch> for helping to scorekeep as well, and same goes for <WinKing> during this difficult time in your life.

I'm happy with 4 silvers, and hope to see you all at Norway.

Apr-28-18  Golden Executive: Thanks a lot to the crew: <chessmoron>, <OhioChessFan>, <Penguincw> and <WinKing>. Great Job.

Congratulations to all the winners and particularly to <SwitchingQuylthulg> on his Triple Crown.

What a final round <Penguin>!!! Well done my friend.

See you guys next time!

SwitchingQuylthulg: Thanks to the hosts and scorekeepers, and congratulations to the winners and medalists! Yes, that was a brilliant final round from <Penguincw>.

Unfortunately I ran out of oomph in the last rounds this time :(

Apr-28-18  WinKing: Thanks to <chessmoron> & <OhioChessFan> for running & hosting this great contest! Some top shelf commentary there <OCF>. You had me smiling. :)

Congratulations to all of the medal winners! Another 'triple crown' by <SwitchingQuylthulg>...phenomenal! The Aztecs & Incas never had as much gold as this guy does. ;) Kudos to <Golden Executive> who had to work hard to get that final 4th Gold. Nicely done <GE>!

Special thanks to <Penguincw> who stepped up & filled in for <chessmoron> in the final two rounds. Great job on the scoring! You also had a monster final round bagging 4 silvers. Not to be taken lightly! Hope to see you all for the Norway tournament coming up in about a month.

Apr-28-18  Count Wedgemore: Thanks guys, for another great prediction contest. I'm looking forward to compete again during Norway Chess, and do better there (I hope). See you then, my friends!

  OhioChessFan: ** Final Recap **

<Switch> carried through his strong performance to the very end, and came up just short of a second consecutive Quadruple Crown. <GE> heroically held on to claim the Bonus Ranker crown, to the complete relief of <Penguincw>. <Penguin> had a huge final round and ended up with a Quadruple Silver. Our crack research staff is investigating whether that's ever been done before.

In other news, <chessmoron> was so taken by the beauty of Lima, Ohio, he may stay there. Nobody has figured out what Round "9:z" means in <offramp's> last round predictions, but wise people are leaving that one alone. <whiteshark> took advantage of a sleep-deprived <OCF> and picked only one game just to mess with him. Even worse, <OCF> didn't notice that <ws> hadn't been participating. Just to be spiteful, <OCF> is considering awarding <whiteshark> a Quadruple Clown. Apparently, <WinKing> didn't notice he wasn't participating, which didn't stop him from thanking everyone for the enjoyable contest.

Thanks to everyone for playing and hope to see you at Norway.

Penguincw: Ah, I knew I might've been missing someone in the standings. But I spared them the quadruple zero. ;)

I actually had a brief dream last night about this contest. All I remembered is that all 5 games this round were predicted exactly correct by 1 user each (and by 5 different users).

OhioChessFan: The rule change is fine, but I still think it comes down to people doing the right thing. There's 2 really annoying strategies:

1. Picking all draws. Well, yeah, that will get you a lot of medals, but to me, it's very borrrrrrrrrrrrringgggggg. Congratulations. You won a contest by being the most boring contestant. There are a few contests where in fact, you know there will be a whole lot of draws, but that's not what I mean here.

2. Start picking all decisive games once you're out of the running in Standard and 1-2-3. It's not clever. It's not a great strategy. Everyone already knows it's out there to be done, and 9 out of 10 people won't do it. It's extremely unsporting. I know I'm not the only person who has sincerely picked a Black win at the end of a tournament and then saw that 5 other people did also, not because they really believed it would happen, but because they were trying to pick up a cheap medal in Betting Ranker. It's myopic, as the people who do it apparently don't consider that everyone else could do it, but choose not to. One person used to do that stuff to the point of obnoxiousness. He always seemed to hit a jackpot, and win a gold medal while 40 points behind in the other 2 rankers, and every long time player knows who I mean. All for a pretend gold medal in a game that sort of gets your mind off of the troubles of life a little. If I wanted to see people try to scam their way to success, I'd just stay at work 24/7.

I do accept the different styles and am okay with that. It's obvious to me that <whiteshark> picks a lot of decisive games in general. There's a couple people I think have a strategy of picking Black if they think there's a better than 1/3 chance of Black winning. Both of those sort of gear themselves to the 1-2-3 contest. I'm in the crowd that always pick the games as I expect them to end up. That gears itself to the Standard contest.

I hate to carry on about people taking this too seriously, and understand the Irony Factor of me posting this. But this has always been a real annoyance for me.

May-23-18  Count Wedgemore: <OhioChessFan: There's 2 really annoying strategies..>

When I, not so long ago, started participating in the prediction contests, these two somewhat unsportsmanlike strategies were something I noticed rather quickly, and it annoyed me too. So I'm with you, <OCF>. Something had to be done about this.

The new "10%-non-draw" rule is definitely an improvement, and will ensure a fairer contest, especially in the Standard Ranker. Now, I've pondered on how to deal with that second strategy, if there is anything that can be done to dissuade players from employing it, but I can't come up with anything constructive.

May-25-18  Boomie: It seems that folks were betting the farm on draws in that last round. I suggest removing draws as options. Win, lose, or no bet. There are plenty of draw options in the daily double and the trifecta.

OhioChessFan: I almost bet max on 3 draws in the 9th round Pick 3 of Summer. Interesting thought on W/B/No bet. <Winky> might go for that. There are games, though where a heavy favorite with White, I'd really want a shot to pick the draw, which would be a case where the draw was an upset result.

My issue with ChessBookie is I think it's (mostly) okay there to sort of play the odds, pick games you don't expect to win, etc. But I just keep reverting back to picking them as I see them. And the odds playing sharks eat me for lunch with that strategy.

Whereas the prediction contests.......I'll unload with every problem I have with them. Mostly in order of most annoying to least annoying:

1. Picking all decisive games, particularly Black wins, after you're eliminated in Standard and 1-2-3. I think it's unsporting, even if only for the last round. I think one reason I have so many bronze medals is that I don't do that and sort of pass people at the end who are using that strategy.

2. Picking all draws.

3. Using the open picks system to wait until the end of the prediction time to take that information of other people and let it influence your picks.

4. Picking different game results in the Moves Prediction and Games Prediction Contests.

I think the only one you can really enact a rule on is #2, and I guess the new rule does that pretty well. I would like a gentleman's agreement to not engage in #1. I am not sure people engage in #3, but there are times I think they do. It's hard to tell, but if this was my show, I'd make a statement to the effect that I don't approve of it. #4, not too big a deal, but I don't much care for it.

I know some of the contestants in Moves Prediction will be surprised that I don't like people using different results for the two contests. They'll appeal to the differing strategies, and I hear that. But again, these are two contests to predict the results of chess games, not to figure out a complex gambling system/strategy to assign to chess games along with every other gambling scenario you can find. At least, that's how I see it.

May-25-18  WinKing: That's way too many gripes <OCF>. You sound like an old man. :)
