Dec-18-20  Z4all: For us archive lingoists, at least two updates would be appreciated...

1. As <Telemus> has kindly requested several times already, the <CG> Zipfile archive could really do with an update.

In fact, getting it back on a regular update schedule would reflect well on the site.

2. A bit deeper in the weeds, but a nice feature Dan added was the auto-linking of Winter articles.

This logic needed hand updating, due to Winter's idiosyncratic posting of new articles on his index page, only to be moved later to an archive.

That meant that Dan had to keep a lookup table in the code, which hasn't been updated since he died. Of course, because Winter has slightly curtailed his posting, <CG> isn't quite as out of date as it could be.

I'll post an example of this later, iir.

Dec-19-20  fabelhaft: There is a chess boom connected to Queen’s Gambit, with chess selling better than in decades. At the same time very few OTB events are played due to corona, which makes the rare top tournaments that actually are played much more anticipated and talked about than usual.

If one wanted to increase discussion, or be of service to the users, the few classical super tournaments would be added earlier. It sure isn’t many such events to keep track of, maybe two the last ten months. The Russian Superfinal had 103 pages of discussion in 2004, in 2007 it was 46 pages. Not counting the discussions on the individual in all 120+ games.

Nowadays these events go by unnoticed in spite of the many interesting aspects. Svidler could win his ninth national Championship, Karjakin could win his first, but in the end Nepomniachtchi won his second. Dubov won a sacrificial brilliancy against Karjakin that received universal praise. There have been lots of exciting games and things to discuss the last weeks, at other sites.

Here, the event is added first after the eleven rounds have been played, with missing games, hidden away from the front page, without information. Dubov vs Karjakin is not included even several days after the tournament finished. With all respect, and even if most of these things usually are corrected later after a few reminders, it all gives an impression that top chess isn’t given the recognition it should deserve on a leading chess site.

Sargon: Dear fellow Chessgames.com members, we do sincerely apologize for any and all oversights regarding the timely addition of tournaments deemed important by various members, as well as the zip file update issue, which has also been raised more than once.

Although I myself have been working on some other pressing matters in recent months, those "fires" have now been adequately extinguished, and I personally vow to make a bona fide effort at providing more timely responses to <all> issues raised on this forum. To wit, please notify us regarding:

1) Events with incomplete results, so their game records can be fully updated.

2) Events whose results are generally complete in the aggregate, but which might be scattered among multiple tournament id's—and which should therefore be consolidated into a single event.

3) Enabling kibitzing and/or the display of crosstables for events when appropriate.

4) Basically, anything and everything we've come up short on.

So please continue providing your valuable feedback, and bear with us as we try to address these issues as promptly as possible. Moving forward, all we can do is make every effort to avoid repeating past mistakes. Again, we pledge good faith and due diligence, and hope to receive the same from our valued membership.

<The primary reason for the existence of this chess community is to provide an enjoyable and fulfilling experience for all members, and to cover every aspect of this superb pastime as thoroughly as possible.>

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, one and all!

Tabanus: <Sargon> Good morning, and Merry Christmas!

I'll be gone gone for a week soon, but plan to make a short intro to Russian Championship Superfinal (Women) (2020) first. The following game is missing because it's a standard GM draw and gets automatically rejected:

[Event "70th ch-RUS w TB 2020"]
[Site "Moscow RUS"]
[Date "2020.12.16"]
[Round "1"]
[White "Polina Shuvalova"]
[Black "Aleksandra Goryachkina"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[WhiteElo "2456"]
[BlackElo "2593"]
[EventDate "2020.12.16"]

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. O-O Nxe4 5. d4 Nd6 6. dxe5 Nxb5 7. a4 Nbd4 8. Nxd4 d5 9. exd6 Nxd4 10. Qxd4 Qxd6 11. Qe4+ Qe6 12. Qd4 Qd6 13. Qe4+ Qe6 14. Qd4 Qd6 15. Qe4+ 1/2-1/2

I'd like to have this game and the two other playoff games together under a seeparate heading, say "Russian Superfinal (Women) Playoff" (TI-ed or not). Similar to Russian Championship Superfinal (Women) Tiebreaks (2019).

Dec-20-20  Sokrates: A fine, substantial, constructive post from you, <Sargon>. Thank you!

I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I believe that account was held by User: tpstar. Whatever ignore-list he put up there will most likely not be changed.

<MissScarlett>

How would you know if it were written under duress?

Also, what <Sargon> likes to wear around the house is his business eh. I like to wear a duress every now and again, though I confess I prefer slacks.

Are slacks still a thing? We wear them up in Canada, but Canada has never really left the 1950s eh.

<tpstar> didn't have me on ignore that I know. But it makes sense.

Maybe someone could nominate A Galliamova vs A Kashlinskaya, 2020

Tabanus: There's a huge ad on top of the home page.
Dec-20-20  Sokrates: Yes, the ad <Chess Crypto>. I have also wondered why it suddenly turned up. I think we are well supplied with crypto.

<jfq> Slacks? Yeah, my older sister wore them in the 50s - with a red lacquered belt. I prefer caramel-brown plus-fours and a propelled cap, a nod to Tin-Tin and Huey, Dewey and Louie. May they never resign!

saffuna: I'm getting ads on top of ads.

I don't mind ads in general. But if I close an ad at the bottom of a page (such as right now), it's irritating for another ad to pop up there 20 seconds later.

Once you click off an ad in that space should be ad-free.

OhioChessFan: I had been getting an ad on the right side of the new kibitzing and chessforums pages sporadically until yesterday. On my mobile, Chrome browser. Those stopped, but I then began getting an ad near the top of the home page. I'm struggling through it and think I'll survive.

<Jim> if you click on your forum "preferences" and scroll down the list, you will find a box labeled <Do not display 3rd party ads>.

Make sure this box is checked. If you check this box and you are still seeing the ads, then come back here and report, because that will be an "ad bug" that needs to be fixed.
