MissScarlett: If the four-minute warning sounds, I doubt I'll have the presence of mind to send <Miss Susan> an email. You'll only know I'm gone when Karpov vs Timman, 1988 is <GOTD> again.
Oct-28-21  technical draw: I have been on this site for 18 years and I am sure some users have passed without our knowledge. However of those that are known to have died while active members I remember most DomDaniel and tpstar. It is always sad because we all here are "friends" even though we have never met. In case I kick the bucket I have left instructions to my son to inform all my friends (ok, so there's only one) of my passing.

MissScarlett: I've received the following pun submissions all submitted by User: Messiah

<MISS SCARLETT: my account got deactivated, please ask someone to check the>

<MISS SCARLETT: mailbox chess@chessgames.com - they don't reply to my e-mails>

<MISS SCARLETT: and activation mails don't arrive, either. Thank you.>

Terrible! What can it all mean?

Susan Freeman: <Messiah> you are fixed. Thanks to Steve. Did you try to update your email perhaps. Sorry for the inconvenience
Oct-29-21  Colonel Mortimer: <MissScarlett: <What is the mechanic behind the imperative to prematurely announce the passing away of forum members based on rumours?>

What's the alternative? Death certificates? Obituaries in the London <Times>?>

How about not say anything.

Oct-29-21  Messiah: <Susan> & <MissScarlett>, thank you for the help. I changed the e-mail address under my registration, then the account got deactivated, that means I wasn't able to share my important thoughts as kibitzes. When I noticed that the activation e-mail does not arrive, I reverted the e-mail address to the original one, just to learn that activation e-mails do not arrive there either! As it seems my e-mails went straight to the spam folder of CG's contact mailbox, I had no better idea than submitting a cry for help in the pun submission page (different strategies were possible, but this one was the quickest).

Once again, thank you for re-activating me, now I can share the usual deep and significant thoughts of mine.

Stonehenge: A photo of Jocelyn Wildenstein will do.

That's the kind of little flourish that Daniel enjoyed during so much...

The earliest example I could find is from 2005:

Oct-31-21  Z truth 000000001: Not sure exactly when, but by 2010 the ghoulish face was replaced by a witch's hat and broom:

And then, sadly, with Daniel's passing the Haloween tradition was forgotten (2018-??):

MissScarlett: I hear on the grapevine that a new staff member may be joining the payroll. <Miss Susan>, what can you tell us?

Who knew CG had a grapevine.

MissScarlett: Well, who knew <cg> had a Karl Vine? Or indeed a Karl Weinstock? Wait, when was this agreed upon? Has <Tab> gone rogue again?
Nov-03-21  Z truth 000000001: Why post that here, <Missy>, instead of over in the Bistro?

Maybe you're trying to just Vine 'em up?!

MissScarlett: Was the upkeep of FIDE Grand Swiss (2021) and FIDE Grand Swiss Women (2021) down to <Stonehenge>? If so, who will fill the breach? With the world championship match only three weeks away, will our - low be it spoken - prospective new team member be on board, oven ready and raring to go?

Phony Benoni: Today's GOTD, Rybka vs Shredder, 2007, is identical to that of November 2, just as the GOTD for November 3 (Kasparov vs Korchnoi, 1983) repeated that of November 1.

beatgiant: Yes, I'm still hard at work trying to bring back the smiley faces.

Tonight, I made changes to repair the characters for almost all of the user game collections. (My testing showed a small handful that didn't work, and I'll fix those soon.)
