Annie K.: We should have it soon. :)

Also next in line: Hainan Danzhou, the World Junior Championships (open and girls), and St. Louis Rapid & Blitz.

You need to check out Blackadder, Richard. I think it's been voted our 2nd greatest situation comedy ever after only fools and horses. Different humour of course but for me Blackadder was just pure sarcastic piss taking genius. I wish I was one hundredth as witty as Edmund Blackadder :)

Check It Out: It's about time for a Carlsen vs Caruana WC page. Just think of all the traffic it will drive to the site! Think of all the heated discussions, friendly banter, GOAT disagreement, and numbers - the endless percentages, decimals, and stats - the groveling masses are waiting for this like a crazy yet patient mob outside a Wal-Mart on black Friday morning. Give us what we neeeeeeeeeed!
Oct-22-18  Count Wedgemore: <CIO> Now that is what I'd call a compelling argument.

Check It Out: If I complain that the monday puzzle of the day has been the same one three weeks running do I get a cute /sarcastic youtube from Sargon?
Oct-22-18  morfishine: Yes, we need the 2018 WC page activated. It starts in 18 days!
Oct-22-18  MrMelad: <Sargon> Thanks for the answer. But still those tournaments are missing from the homepage?

Here are two suggestions:

1. Show on the homescreen page links to important upcoming tournaments with participant list. This is how I used to know that a tournament is starting and I could follow my favorite players.

2. Update tournament results in real-time (hours at most after games finish).

Following those two relatively simple suggestions will usually keep me from wandering to other websites.

Thanks again and have a good day

Oct-22-18  Count Wedgemore: <OCF: for or against?>

LOL. Well, FOR of course! <Endless percentages, decimals, and stats -> This sounds like fun, doesn't it? Heia Magnus!

I just want to know when the first game starts. :)

Oct-22-18  diceman: <Richard Taylor:

Well re politic and being politic, take a leaf out of New Zealand's Prime Minister, a woman, Jacinda Adern>

<Daniel in his dealing with me (not much) seemed not the kind of bigot - often ill-educated and naive or they are simply inherently right wing who often was a supporter or Trump>

Why don't you take a leaf from Jacinda Adern, before sharing your bigotry of America, and its people?

Oct-22-18  Robed.Bishop: <DWOB: I wish I was one hundredth as witty as Edmund Blackadder :)>

So do we.

Oct-22-18  Count Wedgemore: <Robed.Bishop: So do we.> LOL.

And if he had one hundredth of his intellect it would've been even better.

Oct-22-18  Boomie: October 20

<Boomie: We are missing the Isle of Man or I can't find it.>

<Susan Freeman: Sargon is doing it after lunch :)>

October 22

Still no IoM. That must be quite a lunch he's having.

chessgames.com: <CheckItOut> Updating the weekly puzzles is a rather manual procedure that Sargon has forgotten to complete on time (Sunday night before midnight) on a few occasions. Sooner or later, he did correct the situation in each case, and he's now set himself a reminder, so it shouldn't happen again.

In the future, this is one feature that could stand for some improvements and automation.

We apologize for the oversight and have taken steps to avoid repeating it...

chessgames.com: <Boomie:> Regarding the Isle of Man tournament, Sargon is currently processing a list of about a half dozen events for import into the database, and they should all be available by this evening (Monday EST).

We apologize for the delay...

  Susan Freeman: hmmm, why not?
Oct-22-18  parisattack: Hello <Susan Freeman>

Just my nickel's worth; perhaps less.:)

I was an active member here for 13 years. I decided not to re-up late last year.

The reason - the avalanche of off-topic, trolls and - as another user said - 'incivility.'

I am in the dark as to why folks would come to a CHESS website to engage in flame wars, talk politics, religion, music and so much more. There are dozens of forums for those topics. Typically, the Recent Kibitzing will show about 70% and higher non-chess discussions. I realize these are user's personal forum...but still.

I am in another chess forum, a Go game forum, a watch collector's forum and two stamp forums. Off-topic is simply unheard of save for a single 'off-topic' sub-forum...

Every year when I re-upped, I sent Daniel a laundry list of my suggestions for making CG.com better (at least for me, LOL!). He ALWAYS responded in depth That kind of caring is what made this website so special and unique of the many chess sites! You could feel the love!

Anyways, a couple of times we kicked around the idea of a 'Banish' mode, sort of an 'Ignore' on steroids where a member could select to see absolutely no sign of another member or user. I believe Daniel said it was possible save perhaps seeing someone's name or quote in another unbanished user's message...

Kibitzer's Cafe is good but personally I don't like to see Rogoff's forum hijacked; I think it should be wiped clean. As to moderators trying to keep threads on the straight and narrow - that is a good idea if it is administered properly Big IF...some things are too ingrained in the CG culture and the moderator would forever be playing whack-a-mole. Perhaps it could be accomplished over time; I dunno.

As long as I'm here hehe some minor suggestions ... 1) When going over a game, pulling it up, one could mouse over the names and see their ratings, 2) Some .doc (WORD) capabilities in formatting text, 3) There are some very strange names for many opening variations; certainly not standard. Many hypermodern openings are misnamed because of transposition moves. Instead of 'RETI' (as an example) it should be 'ENGLISH by transposition'. Perhaps ENGLISH(t) or some such.

I do wish you, <Sargon> and the CG.com team the very, very best carrying Daniel's project into the future.

Peace.

You're right about that.

<I don't like to see Rogoff's forum hijacked; I think it should be wiped clean.> I think that's the wrong solution.

I post frequently on the puzzles and GOTD and occasionally on other games, always on topic. But I also post on the <Rogoff> page and (for very different reasons) the <Stumpers> page. I'm sure I spend more time on those two than all the other pages together.

My justification for that is that most of the people who post on this site are *smart*. People who frequent a chess site tend to be of above-average intelligence and well educated. That makes conversation with them on any subject worthwhile.

Unfortunately, some are as badly behaved as you say, especially on the <Rogoff> page. The cloak of anonymity emboldens them to write things they would never dare to say if they used their real names.

But the answer isn't to delete everything posted there. All that is necessary is to enforce the rules that <chessgames.com> has always claimed to adhere to, but often has disregarded.

By all means, *banish* offending individuals. By "banish" I mean suspend them from the site: temporarily the first time, and permanently for a second offense.

Calling another kibitzer insulting names is certainly a sufficient ground. Anyone who finds anything objectionable in any post should be able to get action against the offender by sending an e-mail to the administration.

Obviously this practice could wind up using an inordinate amount of administrators' time if it is abused, but there is a cure for that: suspend anyone who turns in a false alarm.
