|
| Jan-05-20 | | diagonal: <Annie> back in Chessgames, that's a good start into 2020! <JFQ>, <Tab>, and many further excellent contributors in the community are <ready to help>, cg. certainly can and must integrate these well-informed gentlemen & gentlewomen in a prosperous way as it has been done succesfully on various chess topics and in different forms: daily (!) maintenance of new games & standings table, really rigorous standardization of the tournament names & nomenklatura such as the correct game type, tournament reviews of historical events & intros for current contests, consistent player biographies & bio up-dates, fixing correction slips & uploading pgn submissions promptly, enforcing the posting guidelines & launching editing projects / research. The proof of the pudding is in the eating: The Women's World Chess Championship has started today (Sunday, Jan 5, 2020) |

 | | Annie K.: Happy New Year, and thanks everybody!
You will find many newly imported tournaments at the
New Tournaments page. (A number of tiebreak games are in separate events that don't appear on this page, but I'll tend to linking those from the event introductions soon). We'll get the Bookie Fall Leg properly wrapped up shortly, and the Championship Leg will begin in a few days with the traditional Tata Steel betting. The Caissars are also about to start, and tomorrow I'll look into possibly relaying some of the Women's WCC match, at least until Tata Steel begins. :) |

 | | Tabanus: <Annie> I have the World Rapid Open + Women intros ready at home and can add them later today. I can make ones for the blitz too. On my 26 slips waiting, I'll soon be away from CG for a month, from approx. 19 Jan. to 19 Feb., hoping to catch up. |
|
| Jan-06-20 | | diagonal: Recent tournaments have been imported, and cg. user game submissions processed. Good! <OCF> As a member since 2004, I had been a premium member for about ten to twelve years, last year I did not renew. Reason: some customer dissatisfaction with the development of this site. <Sargon> pointed out the fundamental issue one year ago:
<We are developing a comprehensive framework to support flexible delegation of virtually all Admin duties to worthy individuals, thereby allowing IT professionals like myself to focus on improving the community—via the development of new features and the ongoing improvement of existing ones.> (Quote, January 09-19) <Do you think Chessgames can be maintained by only one person forever? Quite the contrary—we're taking things to the next level.> (Quote, January 10-19 in the Tata Steel Masters section) Innumerable Chessgames contributors are willing, and highly qualified, of course, to assist and help to make the content better (see above: daily maintaining and effective linking of data, tournaments, games, bios), but are / were not allowed. I hope, with <Annie Kappel> as Admin and content & community coordinator, the corresponding points can be improved now—and volunteers integrated, <fabelhaft>, <JFQ>, <Stonehenge>, <Tab>, to name a few, I certainly have missed many! PS: I'm full-time working (time is somehow limited), no financial interests. |
|
| Jan-06-20 | | Count Wedgemore: I'm thinking like <OCF> here. I don't know, I just find it a bit lame to come up with all kinds of demands like: <daily (!) maintenance of new games & standings table, really rigorous standardization of the tournament names & nomenklatura such as the correct game type, tournament reviews of historical events & intros for current contests, consistent player biographies & bio up-dates, fixing correction slips & uploading pgn submissions promptly, enforcing the posting guidelines & launching editing projects / research.>
when one is nothing but a freeloader (and look ,<diagonal>, it's hardly relevant that you've been a premium member for several years past, you're not paying now). Nothing wrong with just being a non-premium member here, of course, but personally, if I just used this site for free, I would feel I had little rights to complain about the management of this site. Like in all services, if one is a paying customer one has every right to complain (I've been quite outspoken in my criticism of this site myself lately. Now that the great <Annie K.> has taken over the reins, I doubt there will be many more complaints from me, however :=), but since <diagonal> is not (currently) contributing to the maintenance of this site, his whining is just, well, a bit embarrassing, to be honest. Pay up or shut up. |
|
| Jan-06-20 | | nok: Ignore this capital stooge and speak your mind freely, <diagonal>. |
|
Jan-07-20
 | | Annie K.: Please let's not have sniping about membership status here. Granted, the site can use all the financial support it can get. ;) But not everybody can afford to pay, and it's possible to be a very valuable contributor without being a Premium member. Specifically, I have often noticed <diagonal> posting amazing historical background writeups for tournaments, as soon as their forums are opened, that surely enhance the experience of any user visiting them! Just take a look at Hastings Masters (2019/20) (2020), for example. :) Thanks <Tab>! |

 | | Fusilli: I’ve been a member of this community since 2004. I tend to focus on games, openings and puzzles, but I also enjoy the personal touch, support, and friendliness that I find here. I just want to say that at $29/year for a premium membership, less than $3/month, I get A LOT out of this website. While sometimes a few things may not be optimal, I have nothing to complain about. So, I just want to say thank you to the admin or admins. I value your work, I get great value for my buck, and I appreciate that you stay the course and work on it and strive to make the website better every day. Cheers! (P.S. I am only writing from my personal experience. I recognize that for many folks, $29/year is a bigger effort than what I am making it sound like here. I don't mean to ignore or dismiss that.) |

 | | Diademas: Congratulations to all of us on CG's renaissance. Will there be a Caissars this year? |
|
Jan-11-20
 | | Annie K.: Thanks <Fusilli>, <Diademas>. :) Yes, the Caissars should begin as soon as <Sargon> is done with some updates to the voting page that he wants to get in first. That means, um, sooner or later. But they will be advertised on the homepage, so nobody will miss it. ;) <Ohio> could you resend it to my direct mail meanwhile? |

 | | kingscrusher: Is it possible to swap out the pronunciation java applets now with HTML 5 - here is how to do it: https://stackoverflow.com/questions... I was checking out Jakovenko for a video today and I don't have Java installed anymore because Sun is a pain etc. But HTML 5 can play audio now natively - no need to create this dependency on a Java applet. Cheers, K |

| Jan-13-20 | | Boomie: <Fusilli: Premies> There are a handful of former premies who are withholding fees for various reasons. I have asked on a number of occasions to fix the Rogoff player page. Why not have a page called "Off Topic" or something and move all that blather to it? I haven't worked as a programmer for a while but I think even I could code that in an hour or so. Perhaps if Rogoff was dead, using his page this way would be tolerable. But he is not only alive, he is an avid chess fan. To trash his page this way is atrocious. |

 | | Diademas: <Perhaps if Rogoff was dead, using his page this way would be tolerable. But he is not only alive, he is an avid chess fan. To trash his page this way is atrocious.> According to the main page, there are over 943,000 games and God only knows how many player pages on this site. You are of course entitled to your own opinion, but it seems a bit strange to refuse to join in because you don't like one of them.
I'm also a bit tired of people taking offence on behalf of others. <There are a handful of former premies who are withholding fees for various reasons.> If you want a Premium membership without forking over the money, you can earn it here: The Kibitzer's Café |
|
Jan-13-20
 | | Tabanus: <Boomie> I agree, and think CG could attract more members by being a bit more serious. But perhaps they think they earn enough money as it is. Axe it down ;) |
|
Jan-14-20
 | | Tabanus: <CG> Why not put the following (example) forums easily accessible on the lower part of front page: <CHESSGAMES CUBBY-HOLES> (or some other title) <The following forums are for other things than chess. They are less monitored, and do not show up in Recent Kibitzing.Business
Cars
Clothes
Food
Gaming
Language
Lifestyle
Maths
Movies
Music
Odd Lies
Parenting
Pets
Puns
Politics
Sex
Sports
Travel>
Then transfer the Rogoff kibitzing except the first two pages to Politics, and close down Rogoff for a year or so. Similar with Stumpers and Odd Lie. I think this could give you somewhat freer hands on the player and event pages. |
|
| Jan-15-20 | | Boomie: <CG: Type Alert> Russian Championship Superfinal (2007) The title reads: "Russian Championship Superfinal (2007)" The text reads: "The 60th Russian Championship Superfinal was played in the Central Chess House in Moscow, Russia, 18-30 December 2009." Hopefully, 2007 is correct since the game scores have that. |
