Jan-30-06  percyblakeney: Wow, I must have had a good finish since I ended up with only the shared winners ahead of me, last time I checked the standings I was far behind :-)

cu8sfan: <percyblakeney> Indeed, here are your results for rounds 1-7 and 8-13:

1-7: 24 points, 49% correct predictions.
8-13: 27 points, 64% correct predictions.

Jan-30-06  bobbyboomer: <cu8sfan> Again, thanks for running this contest. I really enjoy predicting (guessing). When does Linares start? If I remember right, end of next month?

cu8sfan: <YouRang> has also programmed a so called "Betting Ranker".

Let's suppose we would each pay 1$ for a prediction and this pot would be divided amongst those that get that prediction right. Let's check who the winners are:

<Earnings, User ID, Games, Rounds>

$54.76,VishyFan,84,12
$40.13,Joshka,91,13
$31.88,Broon Bottle,84,12
$29.05,YouRang,91,13
$22.07,Resignation Trap,84,12

VishyFan won simply for being the only one to correctly predict van Wely-Leko (1-0). The earnings were $56.

Don't take <YouRang>'s fourth place too serious as I found this piece of code in <YouRang>'s program:

<
if UserID = 'YouRang' then earning = 2*abs(earning);
>

(-:

Let's see how the winners of the standard contest fared:

$0.69,acirce,91,13
$-4.18,cromat,91,13
$-0.58,TechN9ne,91,13

This is not surprising as you can win big by predicting lopsided wins or losses and not by simply getting the predictions right.

Jan-30-06  suenteus po 147: <cu8sfan> Thanks for the prediction contest! It's a fun way to keep track of the rounds and adds a bit of spice to anticipating the outcome of each game. You truly are one of the most constructive kibitzers on the site!

<YouRang> Thanks for writing programs to make <cu8sfan>'s life easier and his updates quicker ;) Mayhap you will be the most constructive kibitzer of 2006! :D

Jan-30-06  Bobak Zahmat: <cus8fan> Thanks man. You're great. It's a shame I could not post my predictions each day, but next time better!

WannaBe: <cu8sfan> Thank you again for doing this for Corus. I'm sure <YouRang>'s software took a lot of the work away and made it easier for you. =)

Looking forward to the next one!!

Jan-30-06  Broon Bottle: <cu8sfan>

Yes, many thanks for taking the trouble. Great fun. See you all at Linares. ch-cheers, pals

Jan-30-06  PinkPanther: 9 decisive games and 82 draws. No further explanation is needed as to why I was complaining.

cu8sfan: <Is Linares up next?> Yes, and it's only three weeks away!
Jan-30-06  TechN9ne: yes great job cu8sfan, now if only i had know that the russian superfinals counted toward the yearly points!@ and thx to cade for casting the decising tournament winner opinion! actually jk i view this as just a fun deal, congrats to all participants for making chessgames a great site.
Jan-30-06  Stephen Drawking: Dear <cu8sfan>: I am a new user who probably will participate in the Linares prediction contest. I want to understand the "overal standings in the prediction contest 2006". How is measured that? I guess <acirce> or <TechN9ne> or <cromat> won 5 points for winning this Corus contest, but I don't know how. And how you get 8 points? Thanks

cu8sfan: <Stephen Drawking> Welcome to this great site! I hope you'll have fun kibitzing while improving your chess.

For the rules of the prediction tournament go to page one of the cu8sfan chessforum. This was the second tournament of the 2006 cycle (the Russian Championship Superfinal (2005) was the first) so that's why I already have 8 points.

Just read your profile. Are you a physicist?

Jan-31-06  Bobak Zahmat: Can't wait Linares to start. Although it is quite clear that Topalov is hot favourite. Hopefully he will succeed to gain around 15 ELO points.
Jan-31-06  percyblakeney: Topalov is the hot favourite indeed, Linares looks slightly weaker than usual. Leko doesn't impress, Aronian and Bacrot lost points in Corus, Svidler wasn't at his best in the Russian Superfinal, Radjabov seemed a bit out of shape in the FIDE World Cup, and then remains Vallejo and Ivanchuk. The latter could be the biggest threat against Topalov, but could just as well have a bad tournament and end up in the bottom half...
Jan-31-06  Bobak Zahmat: Zahmat: Svidler had not much motivation to succeed at the Russian Superfinal probably. But he will stand his ground in Linares. My prediction is:

1) Topalov
2) Svidler/Ivanchuk

WannaBe: I don't know what is more fun, predicting or getting these stats... =)

They are great, I see that with the help of the software, we can obtain more of these stats to keep us amused!

Fun(ny) thing was, I thought they'd all draw in the last round. Boy was I wrong. :-(

cu8sfan: <I thought they'd all draw in the last round.> Last rounds are often very lame. A fight from Topalov and Anand were to be expected but it still surprised me how many games were decisive.
