May-05-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <WannaBe> Yes, unfortunately! I am very much against it.

<cu8sfan> One more question, out of curiousity: How high is the crime rate involving firearms in Switzerland compared to that of the United States?

May-05-06  Montreal1666: <cu8sfan:> when will the 1st round parings be available for MTel?

  cu8sfan: <EmperorAtahualpa><I had no idea that in Switzerland people have guns at home. How did this tradition start?> Well, how do you think we drove the aristocrats out of our country back in 1291? (-;

<How high is the crime rate involving firearms in Switzerland compared to that of the United States?> The best site I know for a question like this is http://www.nationmaster.com/index.php. Check out these stats for instance: Murders (http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T...), Murders per capita (http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T...), Murders with firearms (http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T...) and also per capita (http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T...).

Let's compare the US to Switzerland:
<Country / Murders / M. per capita / M. with firearms / M. with firearms per capita / ratio w. firearms/w.o. firearms>

USA / 12,658 / 0.042802 per 1,000 / 8,259 / 0.0279271 per 1,000 / 0.652

Swi / 69 / 0.00921351 per 1,000 / 40 / 0.00534117 per 1,000 / 0.58

  cu8sfan: Addendum to my previous post: We shouldn't look at murders only because when you attack someone with a gun, the probability that he's going to end up murdered is bigger than it is when you attack with a knife or no weapon at all. Unfortunately the nationmaster site only has stats for firearms in the murder category.

  Open Defence: In India the per capita gun position will probably be very low (I dont know the stats) however the actual crime rate vs reported crime rate would probably be very disproportionate probably because people are suspicious of the Police who are largely feared as corrupt themselves..

  cu8sfan: <<cu8sfan:> when will the 1st round parings be available for MTel?> As soon as the lots are drawn. Check out http://www.mtelmasters06.com/ for more information. It says the tournament starts on May-10th. The drawing of the lots most likely will be on the 9th then.

  cu8sfan: <Open Defence> Of course comparing these numbers between countries is very difficult and we should be very suspicious about the data. What's murder in one country is manslaughter in the other etc. Also as you pointed out, some crimes never are reported etc.

  Open Defence: <cu8sfan> and to think that my country India tops that list on the link you gave even though bulk of the crimes go unreported ..sheesh.....
May-05-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Thanks for that, <cu8sfan>! I see that the Netherlands is not even mentioned in the table of "murder with firearms". I'm not surprised, because in all my life I have never seen a gun at someone's home in this country!

<Open Defence> Don't worry, if you check the figures per capita rather than the total amount, then India is on a much lower rank. :)

  Open Defence: <Emperor> I dont look at it that way .. even if 1 in a million comit a crime in India it makes it a million
May-05-06  acirce: <Every man in Switzerland has to go to the army, and everyone gets to take his gun home - including ammunition!>

I like this. An armed people puts a limit on the kind of tyranny that could ever be imposed on them. This feels to me more important than the fact that the weapons are sometimes misused.

  cu8sfan: <acirce> Interesting statement. I think that's even part of the reasoning why it is so.

  cu8sfan: This one's from a game of mine on Gameknot. I was black and it's white to move. I felt I had a terrible position but white continued with an (I think) incorrect sacrifice - 11.Nxf7 and I got away with it. Any ideas for a better continuation for white? I don't think black has good chances here.

May-05-06  percyblakeney: I'd play fxg6 before putting the knight on f7.
May-05-06  YouRang: <percyblakeney> beat me to it. :-(

I agree with 1. fxg6 (much better than 1. Nxf7)
If 1...fxg6 then 2. Ne6 with threat to bring rook to f8.

If 1...hxg6 then 2. Nxf7

May-05-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <I like this. An armed people puts a limit on the kind of tyranny that could ever be imposed on them. This feels to me more important than the fact that the weapons are sometimes misused.>

<acirce> I think your statement makes sense, and then again, it doesn't. Take a look at your own country Sweden for instance. Surely you can't speak of tyranny in your country but also nobody owns a gun! My point is, there are ways to prevent tyranny without arming the people.

May-06-06  azaris: <An armed people puts a limit on the kind of tyranny that could ever be imposed on them.>

Yeah, just look at how well things went at Waco.

May-06-06  acirce: <EmperorAtahualpa> Of course you're right, provided status quo remains, but that doesn't mean arming the people couldn't be a good thing for the purpose. Chile, for example, had a long tradition of democracy before Pinochet's coup and installment of fascist dictatorship. Let's say that in Sweden there occurs a similar situation. What's there to stop a right-wing coup to better handle the "dangerous situation" than a democracy could? Just an example.

Of course there are many facets of this discussion, on different levels. Conscription into the army or volunteer/professional military? I strongly favor the former.

But everything needs to be taken down to concrete level. The USA is a special kind of society, with a strong tradition of individualism. There it seems you mostly tend to protect yourself and your property. On the other end of the spectrum, take Cuba, with a strong sense of collectivism, where the people is armed for the purpose of defending their country, their achievements and their revolution.

May-08-06  Robin01: Is this where the prediction contest is for the MTel Masters? I do not see anyone predicting yet!

  cu8sfan: <Robin01> There are - as always - two prediction contests. If you want to predict the final standings go to the lostemperor chessforum. Here you can predict round-by-round results. There's no kibitzing yet as we don't know the pairings yet. They are being determined during the opening ceremony which is tomorrow. For more details please refer to page one of my forum and my user profile.

  cu8sfan: <I predict Anand will win, more predictions later><I predict for Topalov to win the MTel Masters!!> Please, if you want to predict the outcome of the whole tournament, go to the lostemperor chessforum. On my forum, you can predict the outcome of the individual games (as soon as the pairings are out), e.g. Topalov vs. Anand: 1-0 / Bacrot - Kamsky: 1/2-1/2.
