 | | WannaBe: <YouRang> Of course, Dodgers had a big lead on the (then) NY Giants, this was 1951. And of course, Dodgers lost when Thompson hit the "Shot Heard Round The World". I'm quite sure there are many other (great?) collapses suffered by teams from all sports. |
|
Jan-12-06 | | YouRang: <WannaBe> Yeah, but losing a best-of-7 game playoff series after taking a 3-0 lead in a professional sport is *special*. To my knowledge, it has never happened in basketball. It has happened just a couple times in hockey. The Yankees now have the honor of being the first and only team in baseball history to suffer this very rare form of collapse. :) |

 | | cu8sfan: <The Yankees now have the honor of being the first and only team in baseball history to suffer this very rare form of collapse.> The fact it happened against the Red Sox makes this honor even more satisfying! (-: |
|
Jan-13-06 | | Stevens: ok ok, enough about that Boston series already!!
I prefer to remember the game 7 walk off homer from Boone myself. And the back to back to back WS wins before that. *Buries head in sand*
I think Damon could be a good signing. I think the spark at the top of the line up is important. Of course, pitching would be better. |
|

 | | cu8sfan: <Stevens> I don't want to shy you away. In the cu8sfan chessforum even Yankees fans are welcome. (-; There are enough memories for Yankees fans that can make them forget the Boston series. Remember Bucky Dent (in New England aka Bucky F*** Dent)?! Damon was an integral part of the Red Sox' recent success and will be a great addition to the Yankees team. Of course, pitching is ALWAYS better. |
|
Jan-13-06 | | nintenchess: <cu8sfan> Just out of curiosity, are you Swiss or American? |
|
Jan-13-06
 | | cu8sfan: <nintenchess> I'm Swiss with a background in American history and culture. (-; |
|
Jan-13-06 | | nintenchess: <cu8sfan> Thanks. |

 | | Joshka: <Cu8sfan> <stevens> <Remember Bucky Dent?> Do I remember!!?? I was living in Boston at the time, and bleeding my love for the Red Sox since I moved there in 1974. Anyway it was around 1978 that I happened to stumble into a chess book store and discovered that there were actual books on chess!!! Since I was so crushed by Dent's homer (believe it was against a Latin pitcher the Sox had) maybe my persona needed something else to dwell on, cause I must have walked into that chess store right around the time of the Karpov vs Korchnoi Match in Sept. or October of 1978. Remember seeing the wall chart for the games they were keeping score on, and they were probably around game 24 or 25. So Bucky crushed me, but maybe opened up a new love??:-) |

 | | Joshka: <Cu8sfan> I agree with you , pitching is the name of the game!!..AND very very UPSET the Tribe decided to let ERA Winner Kevin Millwood get away! In his prime 31 and we let him go..BTW Indians are owned by a BILLIONAIRE!! |

Jan-13-06
 | | cu8sfan: <all> Finally, the schedule's out! http://www.coruschess.com/schedule.... Please read my rules about posting predictions before doing so. Thank you! |
|
Jan-13-06
 | | cu8sfan: <all> I'd like to ask all participants of the prediction contest to read this post and follow these guidelines. Thank you! 1. Please post your predictions in this order: White - Black Result. Right:
Anand - Topalov 1-0
van Wely-Tiviakov 1/2
Karjakin - Adams ½
Leko - Gelfand Draw
Ivanchuk - Aronian =
Wrong:
Anand 1 - Topalov 0
van Wely 1/2 Tiviakov
2. Please always write the full last name of the player. Right:
Peter Leko - Boris Gelfand 1-0
Anand - Ivanchuk 1/2
Wrong:
Peter - Boris 1-0
Vishy - Chuky 1/2
3a. Please don't post "mass predictions"
Right:
Anand - Topalov 1/2
Leko - Gelfand 1/2
Ivanchuk - Aronian 1/2
Bacrot - Karjakin 1/2
Kamsky - Adams 1/2
Tiviakov - Mamedyarov 1/2
Sokolov - van Wely 1/2
Wrong:
Round One: All Draws.
This may look tedious and redundant but it only takes a couple of seconds to copy somenone else's pairings and put a "1/2" behind each of them. 3b. If you want to write a mass prediction for all rounds you may do so but ask yourself what this will be good for. We have <Drawer> and will also have <Whiter> and <Blacker> so posting "I predict all draws for all the rounds" is not forbidden but doesn't make much sense, either. 4. If you don't plan to participate for the whole event please don't participate at all. One- or Two-round participants generate a lot of work and neither I nor they get something in return. 5. Please note that you must participate in at least one of the first three rounds. I will not accept newcomers after the first three rounds. 6. Please read the rules in my profile and on page 1 of the User: cu8sfan page. Thank you for following these guidelines and making my life easier! Good luck to y'all! |

 | | cu8sfan: <acirce> Good to see you participate! |

Jan-13-06
 | | cu8sfan: <EmperorAtahualpa> Looking forward for your pictures. <YouRang> Thanks for the YRC file but I had already made one of my own. And why did you add Karpov in your filter fixups? <all> I am using <YouRang>'s software to compile the results of your predictions. However as it only runs on Windows and I have a Windows system in my office only I won't post results for the first two rounds until Monday morning. Hope you guys are not too disappointed! Let's all give our thanks to <YouRang> for helping me with the contest! |
|
Jan-13-06 | | YouRang: <cu8sfan> I'm glad to know that you're comfortable enough with it to construct the YRC file yourself! The Karpov filter is probably unnecessary. For the San Luis tournament, I found a few cases where people had entered posts mentioning "Kasparov". In rare circumstances, the software (which keys on the first 3 letters) parsed out a prediction for "Kasimjanov" in those posts. It never really created a problem, but it caused a warning message to appear in the processing log. I eliminated such warnings by adding a fixup to change "Kasparov" to "Kssparov". Anyway, I put that fixup in there so that if anyone mentions "Karpov", it won't get confused with "Karjakin". :) BTW - <All> Another rule for posting predictions is that you must enter a prediction for every game in a round. If you enter predictions for just 6 of the 7 games in a round, the software will ignore all of your predictions for that round. |
|
Jan-13-06 | | badmove: My predictions (round 1):
Van Wely - Sokolov 1/2
Mamedyarov - Bacrot 1/2
Tiviakov - Adams 0-1
Topalov - Kamsky 1-0
Gelfand - Leko 1/2
Karjakin - Anand 1/2
Aronian - Ivanchuk 1/2
Wow! I wonder the number of members that haven't post in the last weeks and suddenly appear for this prediction forum. It is impressing considering that there is no "material" reward for that (as far as I know). This is true love to chess (and I am happy to see that) ... or true love to gambling?? PD: I remember a quote (not mine, of course), about that: "Trying to predict the future is like trying to drive down through a country road at night with no lights while looking out the back window." |
|
Jan-13-06 | | NakoSonorense: nice post, badmove. I also liked your bio. :) Have a nice day |
|
Jan-14-06
 | | lostemperor: <YouRang> or someone, you think its possible to put the final standings predictioncontest in an excel spreadsheet orso so you only need to fill in the predictions made and the final results at the end and things will automatically compute? I've been thinking about it and feel it maybe possible. Thanks. |
|
Jan-14-06 | | larrewl: <YouRang> <cu8sfan> It's getting late, but I'd be glad to run a Group B round by round prediction contest on my unused chessforum if I can get your help/advice starting it right away. |
|
Jan-14-06
 | | Annie K.: Another suggestion, <cu8sfan>; on the general tournament pages you could tell at what point the games started by the on-topic comments. Here you can't do that, as the games aren't discussed here. So perhaps a "games started" post, to make sure nobody can get away with posting "predictions" for a round once the games are underway, might prevent arguments later. :) |
|
Jan-14-06
 | | cu8sfan: <Annie K.> I wanted to do that and will in the future but today I was away when the games started. |
|
Jan-14-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: <And I had 100% prediction success for round 1 Group A! A first for me.> <mikejaqua> Great job, especially on Ivanchuk's prediction! |
|
Jan-14-06 | | larrewl: <all> It's not too late to enter your round 2 predictions for Group B at larrewl chessforum. Group B rules are the same as Group A.
Corus Group B participants http://www.coruschess.com/participa...
& schedule
http://www.coruschess.com/schedule..... This is a good time to get to know potential world champions such as Navara (CZE), Naiditsch (GER), Carlsen (NOR), and Cheparinov (BUL). These promising young stars have already beat some in Group A. The sooner you enter, the better, no later than round 3. |
|
Jan-15-06 | | babakova: I think I was the only one who predicted Adams would beat Topalov, and that seems very likely to happen now. |
