| Dec-30-16 | | virginmind: Hi! Left for Onesti in the past 2 days so missed the action. Followed a bit some of the rapids though and looking forward to watch live last day of blitz, which should be at least exciting as yesterday. Also some shopping planned for Revelion dinner/celebration, which we will also have it within the family.
What about you? How was Christmas day and how will you spend New Year's Eve?
Weather got colder and windier, some snow here and there.
See you soon! |
|
Dec-30-16
 | | moronovich: Well, lots of action today..And Carlsen acts like a sour loser at the closing banquet.. But first things first:How good to finally see good old "Chucky" as world Champion. One of the greatest ever in my book.Kudos and more kudos to an eminent player who is turning 48 in a couple of months. And Karjakin on top after the best year of his career.Kudos again as Sergei must feel it as a consolation price after the big match. And who will win the Oscar??.WC Carlsen with some supertournaments and defending the title,or Sergei who won the toughest of all the tournaments, the Candidates, almost beat Magnus and now gold in Blitz.Tough times for the juries ahead... Christmas was a quite and cousy time.Only wify and me.We have almost no family and my sister lives in USA.But that is OK and we give each other a lot of presents and that works very well ;)! Good and healthy ones they were/are.New Years eve : Same recipe (minus the presents:)and saying hello to a couple of the neighbours.Fish and icecream, non alcoholic here in our cousy house. And how about you ?
So time to say:Happy New Year and all the best wishes for both of you.And to you I send my gratitude for all the fruitfull exchanges we have had in the almost bygone year.Thank you. And see you:up and down the road and wherever good meetings take place ! Cheers to good health and bright spirits, all over the world. |
|
| Dec-31-16 | | virginmind: Watched the blitz only partly yesterday due to my nephew birthday celebration and some additional shopping. Carlsen sour loser...well, quite a bit, yeah. Guess we somewhat got used to this attitude of his. What do you want, nobody's perfect:) Yeah, he vanished by the end of the podium ceremony, like: hey, that's a bit too much for me to stand. And kept that denial face and head shaking. Ha ha, imagine if the organisers had brought Wojtaszek in to hand him the medal, I think he would have punched him! But at the end of the day it was a great event with exciting chess and developments. And of course, Ivanchuk the ever returning hero. He is indeed such a marvelous guy. I only wondered why no trace of Caruana, Kramnik, So and Giri. They probably failed to qualify for the event. And so ends a fine year, chesswise and otherwise. It was fun having you here and sharing so many moments of joy, being such a kind host. Thank you! A Happy New Year to you and your wife! |

Jan-03-17
 | | moronovich: Happy New Year <virginmind> ! Everything went well here , and I hope the same for you. There was a televison breakdawn(just before the Queens new years speak;)so we saw and old Hitchkoch movie from 1938 instead. It was hillariuos.Something with a woman disappearing on a train and all was crazy and different.Funny experience..Otherwise another magic rendevous with JWH in town yesterday. And it is amazing how we can talk about almost everything for,in this case,5-5½ hours straight.A tru privellege. Weather is silent and greyish, but fortunately a couple of days with frost, beforer that.Just to remind us that winter still exists:) So just a brief update and now back to meatballs making and do mashed potatoe with tomato salad. Take care and may you have the best start of the new year. Ciao! |

Jan-04-17
 | | moronovich: And the 14th of January the annual Tata Steel commences. Each day they start at 13.30(which is 14.30 at your place). |
|
| Jan-05-17 | | virginmind: Hi! Thank you and please have an excellent year ahead!
What do you think of the recent GCT decision to implement a Universal Rating System? It's not clear from the Chessbase article if this is an official rating, accepted by FIDE and/or if it's gonna be used only within Grand Chess Tour. Anyhow it seems to me unnatural to combine the 3 strengths, but maybe it's just a first reaction of mine. In blitz games are obviously much more mistakes to be found and they shouldn't be added to classical time playing in counting someone's strength. Please send JWH my best wishes and I'm glad you two got toghether another one of those magical experiences. Weather's not bad atm, but an acute worsening is predicted starting tomorrow. Yeah, let's have some fun with Tata Steel coming up! See you around. |
|
Jan-05-17
 | | moronovich: And may you too have an excellent 2017,as well ! Heven´t read the article, but my first reaction is like yours. And I would add that makind IMHO sometimes have a tendency to make things more complicated than they could be.As the rating system is now,it seems to be functioning very well. And should suddenly the blitzsharks catapult into top10/20 ? After all classical chess is our big window to the world..but I will also look deeper into it.
One of my old mentors,a certain Michael Barnett, once said that he saw the deeper journey in life more as a process of getiing rid of stuff in stead of adding... Tonight we will have a serious frost and I love it and on top of that it snowed a bit today ! King winter is trying to fit his own clothes :).. And I will pas your wishes to JWH and should send you new years greetings from my wife ! Tata gonna be fun,I hope, and hopefully also the fishdish in the oven which is ready in few minutes time. See you around and all the best ! |
|
| Jan-07-17 | | virginmind: Wrote a note here about 2 hours ago and upon checking it simply disappeared... Winter full blown over Romania, -12 to minus 25, guts over 80 km/h and snow, and seemingly worse coming...but it's everywhere around. Thank you for the season's wishes and we return them back to you both! Some writing time ahead but will find moments for Tata too.
Comemmorated today at a local church one year of my mother-in-law passing.
And I hope you two are fine and looking forward for a fruitful 2017.
Good bye. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | moronovich: Good evening !
Saw yesterday that the newspaper said :Bucarest -9,cloudy.So still a fullblown winter at your place ? And as I recall:it is definately not your cup of tea.Right ? Hope you will find the energy for the writings though and perhaps Tata will inspire you more that seducing !?:) Here it is mainly calm. The energy level is basicly fine.Which is most needed as thre are craftsmen(kind of working constructors)who are repairing our houses.(We are 20 houses of almost the same construction).Roofs, doors windows, you name it.And it gonna last till september, october ):But it is off to a good start, fingers crossed. But still I am anxious about the noiselevel as I really, really need some quiteness/calmness.But we shall see. Tomorrow weekly meeting with KJ and soon it is Tata again. One more year has passed.Another victory for Wesley ?
And how about the two combattants from the New York match ? Have they recharged their batteries,or !?... I would actually like to swap weather with you,but dont know which button to push:) Take care and see you soon ! |
|
| Jan-10-17 | | virginmind: -9? More like minus 19. I don't know if Bucharest if elsewhere, but there was definitely blazing cold about everywhere in the past 2-3 days about everywhere in romania. And last night: -31 Celsius.
Today it was somewhat warmer in Iasi, around -8 degrees and no more snow and wind since yesterday. But tonight snow&wind are back in force, they say. Want to swap weather? Gladly. Ok, maybe I wouldnt want to miss the snow entirely, but for the reconstructiost, sure why not :) Well, repairing works in construction do come with some amount of noise, and I can understand very well that you don't like this and I too hope for your best that you'll get lucky and the noise will be kept at a minimum. Especially that, as you say, it's gonna take quite some time. Thank you for wishing me energy and inspiration. Tata looks promising, as in every year. Surely we will have encounters to talk about and yeah, follow how the favourites will fare.
Arrivederci. |

Jan-12-17
 | | moronovich: Good evening !
Just a short note before dinner.
Wwather has been : rain, sun, wind and snow !;)So a little of everything.Actually kind of good weater as wife has been home for work due to a smaller flu.Quite cousy actually. Good day to town yesterday, were most of the happenings turned out to be 180 degrees otherwise than I thuoght they should be,which happened to be a fine experience.(With my dizziness this is not an everyday experience,as you probably can figure out!?) Handball WCH is starting now and there are high hopes for the Olympic winners...But France on the home turf are beasts..We shall see.
Tata is also approaching and it is a delight with so many players and rounds paired with the smell of history and traditions. I hope you are progressing with your writings and will have/find time for chess too..And how about your play on the net ? Now back to the kitchen. The rösties dont make themselves !:) Ciao and all the best. |
|
| Jan-14-17 | | virginmind: Hi! Managed to get a flu since 2 days but hopefully I'll survive.
Waiting for So-Carlsen to start in a bit. Big match-up right from the start.
Only seen the European CH (not World) yesterday and it was Denmark against France, but I couldn't watch due to headache.
No, I havent progressed at all in writing and this flu comes at the worst moment. Thanks for the encouragement anyway.
Its great that you two spent more time at home. First day with positive temperatures, but I couldn
t go out. I think I'll switch to Nurofen, as yesterday took 7 halves of Panadol Extra to fight a headache (the longest, 14 hours) which just wouldnt go away. See you soon... |
|
Jan-14-17
 | | moronovich: Duh ? Flu and headache are some really strong opponents and I sincerely hope you will have a speedy recovery ! And perhaps chess will be a fine fellow today !? Distraction, consolation !? All the best and I will try to come back soon, but it is time for an elderly chaps nap. That So-Carlsen game was so nevewracking :) God bedring and see you soon ! |
|
| Jan-14-17 | | virginmind: Thanks, headache already went away, now waiting for the flu to disappear.
Tomorrow Carlsen faces Wojtaszek, oops, he was already mad at him since last month and he will be white, I sense something terrible coming up for black :) Or will he offer us a big surprise? Uhm, on my other post, it seems France played Norway, not Denmark, and indeed its the World (not European) championship. My bad. Bonne nuit. |
|
Jan-15-17
 | | moronovich: Good evening !
We were at the seaside today. For the first time in a long period. And that was very nice.Being born near to the sea,an old sailor,I simply need to feel the ocean sometimes. So not much chess. But gained some money on Harikrishna-Eljanov combined. All in all a peacefull weekend with fine sunny weather and a cousy rythm. And you ? Still no headache and is the flu dissappearing ? I sincerely hope so. <Tomorrow Carlsen faces Wojtaszek, oops, he was already mad at him since last month and he will be white, I sense something terrible coming up for black :) Or will he offer us a big surprise?> You certainly made a point. And a part of the surprise was Carlsens opening AFAICS.Yes it was handball. And the danes are looking very very strong for the moment, but the tournament has just started, just as Tata has....So we shall see. Now it is close to sleeping time.
So see you around and hopefully you will soon be in your strongest condition ! Auf wiedersehen & bonne nuit. |
|
| Jan-16-17 | | virginmind: Hi. Seaside, great stuff. No, flu didn't go away. Tomorrow I go see the doctor.
Some cool stuff going on at Tata, but I didn't watch it live today, going to replay So-Rapport game. Bad weather announced to make a come-back. Other than that, no changes perceived at my horizon. But of course, worldwide so many things both good and bad are happening.
See you soon. |
|
Jan-17-17
 | | moronovich: Giri in danger of winning today, but he knows how to avoid...;)And Wei Yi is not ready for the big clash with Carlsen yet.I doubt he will be one day.
So still holding his streak as undefeated and seems like the best behind Magnus. And makes a much matured impression on me as well as humble and sympathetic...Money on Eljanov who may win this bishopending by the samllest of margins. But hey, that also counts.
I once drew a GM who drew Eljanov who..
They are funny these lines. And another:Has 3-0 vs a former Danish champion who has 2½-½ vs Alekhine,Capa and Lasker in simuls.Gemzø a nice old bloke with whom I had several fine little chats during times. He found it rather easy to draw Nimzo !And I sincerely hope your visit to the doctor was succesfull and I send you all my best energies and wishes ! (Do you remember the echinacea, which is superb for strengethen the immune system?). Here it is so far a good day were the old body responds well. Also to the sunshine outside, which also is allowed to come inside. Now homemade pomme frites and seafood in the oven.Combined with a light salad. Take care and looking forward to hear from you again. Auf wiedersehen. |
|
| Jan-19-17 | | virginmind: Wow, congratulations for such victories in chess! That's great! To think you've drawn and also won against players who played and beaten such legends! I had an x-ray yesterday and my lungs are ok so no troubles. Very cold again here. Wijk is so-so, I havent replayed any game, had to do some work for the job. Maybe today. Tomorrow arrives my sister in law from France and on Sunday she goes with my wife to Onesti for a few days. Or so is the plan, as wify's not sure yet on how many free days from her job she can count on. And a quiet evening approaching, although people gathering in the streets of Bucharest and other cities, demonstrating against a planned amnisty measure by the new Parliament, because some corrupted former politicians will get a chance to go out of prison if this will happen. See you around. |
|
Jan-20-17
 | | moronovich: At Wijk right now.Waiting for Andreikin to win and cash in.But it may be too little of an advantage he has in the rook endgame, which he otherwise palys excellent.ButI have enjoyed the bloody round and I have to "admit" that this Anna Rudolf is growing in my perception...:)And my thoughts go back to Rita and Timothy who were friends from Hungary when I was a teenager.Back in 67-69.(after WW2 we took several hungarian fugitives in Denmark).Around 4 years ago my sister(who lives in Kentucky USA)took a flight and one of the stewardesses were Rita !! I still recall how we took our bicycles to school and listened to Kinks,Beatles and Stones afterwards. So it seems to be a race between Magnus and So with a sligth edge to So IMHO. Weather here is sunny and with so-so temperatures.Wify need a weekend to recover as she has been busy, but fine, lately.Had an awfull headache yeasterday afternoon,so today,I am very relieved it is over and life is good. And how about you ? I am glad your x-rays were fine and perhaps you have done some of the writings with which you were behind !? Anyway I wish all the best for the weekend which has already started and perhaps see you at Wijk/Tata !? Ciao and auf wiedersehen.
<Wow, congratulations for such victories in chess!> Thank you ! |
|
| Jan-24-17 | | virginmind: Carlsen losing to Rapport, now that was some piece of news! And it did look like a seppuku, as they said on Chessbase. Strange things happen nowadays...Anyhow, the edge for So taking this Tata is getting stronger if anything, after this loss of the world champion. Very interesting the rise of So in the past year at least, he is simply getting better and better, at a constant pace. Will he really be the one to challenge Magnus next? It's beginning to look like it, more and more. Of course, we should still wait and see, as a certain Caruana might have a word in this too... Wife due to return this evening from Onesti, while sister in law still remains and returns only on Thursday. Will fly back to Paris on Friday morning. Looking forward to an appealing ninth round in Wijk (or is it one of those days when they'll play elsewhere? No, I think that's tomorrow).
And also we're having Gibraltar coming up as a worthy alternative in kibitzing.
Sayonara! |
|
Jan-24-17
 | | moronovich: Hi ! Good to hear from you again !
Yes certainly a lot of things happening in Wijk an Zee.After overlooking a basic mate in 3 Carlsen ,followed up upon overplaying his hand vs Rapport..
I didnt believe as usual in MC beforehand. As an reaction after the big match and he can/could possible be marked after being away from home for a very long time which may not suit him.Todays encounter vs Van Wely is in that light of extra interesse and importance too.Right now King Loek seems to have survived the worst after the first moves.
A lot of interesting games going on right now so this was just a brief hello to you in your semibachelor state, right !?Hope you enjoy,so do I and all is fine here and nothing especial to remark.På gensyn ! |
