Behold the fiery disk of Ra!

Started with tournaments right after the first Fischer-Spassky set-to, but have long since given up active play in favour of poker.

In my chess playing days, one of the most memorable moments was playing fourth board on the team that won the National High School championship at Cleveland, 1977. Another which stands out was having the pleasure of playing a series of rapid games with Mikhail Tal on his first visit to the USA in 1988. Even after facing a number of titled players, including Teimour Radjabov when he first became a GM (he still gave me a beating), these are things which I'll not forget.

Fischer at his zenith was the greatest of all champions for me, but has never been one of my favourite players. In that number may be included Emanuel Lasker, Bronstein, Korchnoi, Larsen, Speelman, Romanishin, Nakamura and Carlsen, all of whom have displayed outstanding fighting qualities.

Besides sitting across the board from Tal, I have a Lasker number of three and twos for world champions from Capablanca through Carlsen.

Dec-15-12  Shams: <perfidious> Can you help with this endgame? I feel like I'm missing something obvious. Karpov vs Gurgenidze, 1975
Dec-16-12  Jim Bartle: Notable that almost every Yankee/Red Sox went from Boston to NY. Not many the other way.

You kills on the Yankees is irritating, as he was a symbolic Sox. But he was treated badly last year by Valentine and discarded, so I don't blame him.

  Phony Benoni: <perfidious>: Abbazia (1912)

When a collection is used as the basis of an historical tournament page, the event name and other data are standardized. All games now have "Abbazia", and the "Opatija"s have disappeared.

Happy new year.

Jan-13-13  stunningmove: Thanks for joining the discussion over at my forum for the next game. First off our analysis for a couple weeks ago agrees with you. In the Moscow Nd2 is our best chance to win.

About a week ago I posted stats that show in the last five years blacks winning percentage against Adams is under 10% in the Ruy. French and open Sicilian. In the Moscow it's zero! One opening shows a glimmer of hope, the Rossolimo.

If you head back to the site check the stats out. Tell us your thoughts. I'm not a Rossolimo player myself but what I see in the 3...e6 variation has me interested.

Stalker

So he’s saying “Has she ever actually gone out with you, have you even so much as bought her a cup of coffee,

or gone to the movies, you know, like normal people do?", and then he called me Sir, real polite like

He called you Sir, that’s nice, plainclothes was he? did he take you in, or did he come to yours?

He was expensively plain and rather well spoken
he gave me a call and suggested I drop in

You’ve got to watch them, briefed up were you?
we’ve got time for one more if you’re quick

No need, they got nothing, they know they got nothing, and they know I know they got nothing

Right, so when did he play the crazy card, when does he say, “Sir, do you have any mental health history?”

Right then, so I insisted on my phone call, got the Lawyer in and we were out of there by lunchtime, it’s not good though

Mate I told you, there’s an order to things, buy her coffee before you propose, that kind of thing, speaking of orders…

Mar-17-13  thomastonk: <perfidious> Thank you and <TheFocus> for your nice words on the Alexander McDonnell page. I stopped participating there, as soon as AJ begun with personal attacks. I only live once, you know.
Mar-17-13  Jim Bartle: Well, once someone posts five or six times in a row, become more unhinged each time, it doesn't need to be taken seriously.

How saying Chernev was not a primary source turns into calling him a "miserable puke" is incomprehensible.

perfidious: Been a long while since I posted here, or even read this page, as I typically move on to other matters.

<thomastonk> Pity things had to take that route. There is always hope for something better, but dealing with that poster and the negativity could make anyone throw it over in despair.

<Jim> Had no idea what generated the responses on McDonnell, then I reviewed the kibitzing, which displays even those posts by users on ignore.

Every such piece of negativity justifies the decision I took regarding that poster, on coming back after a long absence.

jessicafischerqueen: Thanks for weighing in on the bitter "Archie vs. The Fonz" dispute.

I'm always happy to see you in my place. I do see you regularly, however, because I read almost all of your chess posts.

Thanks for those, they are a welcome breath of sanity and actual knowledge at a site where all of us are guilty, at times, of just shooting our mouths off without thinking first.

FSR: <perfidious> You might find the recent commentary at A J Goldsby amusing. The subject trashes some young player who beat him in a tournament game, says that the player will never be a master, and responds to some commenter (I don't see the comment - dunno if the guy's on my ignore list, or if it was deleted) by remarking that the commenter speculated on the young player's chances of becoming a GM, but (inexplicably) said nothing about the subject's chances. Imagine that! The subject does acknowledge that his chances of becoming a GM are decreasing as time goes on. (The phrase "when pigs fly" comes to mind.) Feel free to delete this comment.

perfidious: <FSR> Saw excerpts of that posted elsewhere (which I wouldn't have read otherwise, because he's on the <perfidious> version of <Perdition In Real Life>).

The bit about his own chances of making GM lessening was indeed funny-barring a miracle win at the World Senior, none of us over-fifty types have a shot-but I was dismayed to see that, apparently, nothing else has changed.

There's always room for hope, but it's hard to remain optimistic in the face of the stark reality that appears to inhabit that corner of the Magic Kingdom.

Apr-29-13  TheFocus: I bet he has his sights set on the World Senior Championship. Doesn't winning that guarantee you a GM title?

perfidious: <TheFocus>: It does; without running through all the titleholders, I believe Okhotnik and Kapengut got their GM titles at this event.

He'll have to wait a few years, though, because if I remember aright, sixty is the minimum age for participation.

perfidious: Excerpt from long, excellent post at <CG> and my (partially) tongue-in-cheek response:

<The Last Straw: <LIFE Master AJ> Calm down! Chessgames.com has many people to take care of, not only you.....>

Quite true: in my nearly thirty-year career, from novice to 2300 player, I played over 2000 serious games, all examples of surpassing brilliance. I'm in the process of bequeathing them all to <CG>.

The journey of a lowly 1200 player to dizzying heights of superb mastery would doubtless prove highly edifying, not to mention giving a spark of hope to those who retain a glimmer of such.

May-20-13  Benzol: <FSR> <perfidious> I get the impression that you feel that <AJ>'s antics are bringing the title of US Life Master into disrepute. What happens when he becomes a GM?

:)

May-20-13  TheFocus: <What happens when he becomes a GM?> His head will swell up so big that Florida will have a new county.

And... he will never let us live it down.

"Hi. I am Grandmaster AJ Goldsby, formerly LIFEMaster AJ Goldsby. Before I get into my new video, "How I Finally Won My GM, that stands for Grandmaster, Title," I would just like to say to all my detractors at <chessgames.com>..."

(First blowing a raspberry)

"Neener! Neener! Neener! Na-nana-naa-nah!"

FSR: <benzol> The only way he would get the GM title at this point is by buying it. (I can't find the story online at the moment, but there was some rich guy who mysteriously made FIDE's top 100 list a few years ago even though he had no title and no one had heard of him. He even bought a FIDE 2450 rating for the guy who drove his car.) That won't happen because (a) he's said he wouldn't do that and (b) he doesn't have the money.
