Jul-24-08  zluria: <YouRang> Yes, I was shocked. I was sure that Alekseev had made some terrible blunder, had hit his forhead with the palm of his hand and resigned immediately. I sat and searched the board for white's easy win.
Jul-24-08  zluria: Looks like Dominguez blundered away his extra pawn. Bacrot has the edge now.
Jul-24-08  acirce: Seems like Bacrot decided to shorten the suffering. I believe White was winning after the queen exchange too, but that was far less sure.
Jul-24-08  vanytchouck: Bacrot is now in trouble...

Bacrot and Pelletier fighting hard for the Van Wely prize.

Jul-24-08  zluria: Why is Bacrot losing now? I don't see it.
I thought he was losing the Knight after Rd4 But I missed that after Qa8+ Rd1 he can just go back with Qa4.
Jul-24-08  dumbgai: I think 47. Qf5 is good for white. He has a bunch of nasty threats around the black king and the black queen can't harrass the white king. It's too hard for me to calculate many concrete variations though.
Jul-24-08  zluria: Is it something like 47. Qf5 Ne7 48. Qf7 Rg8 49. Qxe7 ?
Jul-24-08  acirce: <zluria> Yes.. The computer points out many wins, but that one seems easy enough. 47..Kh7 48.h4 Qe1 49.Re4/49.Nf4.
Jul-24-08  percyblakeney: Bacrot will have six losses and one draw in his last seven games...

tamar: <Why is Bacrot losing now?>

Black's queen is cut off from defending by the rook on d4

Jul-24-08  YouRang: <zluria: Is it something like 47. Qf5 Ne7 48. Qf7 Rg8 49. Qxe7 ?>

That would do. Or 47.Qf5 Kh7 48.h4

Jul-24-08  dumbgai: <Bacrot and Pelletier fighting hard for the Van Wely prize.>

Well to be fair Pelletier is a 2550 playing against 2700s. Bacrot on the other hand...he's always been the French Van Wely in my mind.

Jul-24-08  cannibal: It's amazing, six decided games so far, and each of them had Pelletier or Bacrot on the losing end. Maybe not completely unexpected for Pelletier, but for Bacrot this has to be an absolute disaster.

He plays well up to a point, then collapses.

No hope now. 1-0

Jul-24-08  percyblakeney: Both Bacrot and Pelletier have lots of top tournaments coming up this year and the next in the Grand Prix cycle, but at the moment it doesn't look as if they will be too successful.
Jul-24-08  YouRang: I think it's been quite a long time since Bacrot had an impressive (in a positive sense) performance at a tournament.

Annie K.: To err is human... Toulouse is French.
:p
Jul-24-08  acirce: <He plays well up to a point, then collapses.> He has been expressing frustration about lack of energy before. I hope there's nothing more seriously wrong with him.
Jul-24-08  YouRang: That settle that. 1-0 official.
Jul-24-08  zluria: Basically, this tournament consists of 4 players who draw against each other and two who always lose to all the rest.
Jul-24-08  randzo: hh Van Velly Prize for both
Jul-24-08  acirce: <Bacrot will have six losses and one draw in his last seven games...>

Do these include his last three Baku games? I believe he has played in at least the French League in between:

Jul-24-08  offtherook: <zluria: Basically, this tournament consists of 4 players who draw against each other and two who always lose to all the rest.> Not quite. Alekseev and Carlsen are clearly better than Dominguez and Onischuk, both of whom have drawn against one of the two whipping boys. And once Carlsen is playing white against some of the top four players, I predict he'll start raking in the wins.
Jul-24-08  percyblakeney: <I believe he has played in at least the French League in between>

OK, I had missed that.

Jul-24-08  percyblakeney: If I got it right Dominguez is undefeated in 2008 with something like +6 -0 =17, without facing many top players though.
