Jul-09-13 | | MrSpock: White was probably lost after 24. b4? |
|
Jul-09-13 | | MrSpock: The basic problem of White's game was 18. Nb6?! |
|
Jul-09-13 | | notyetagm: Kamsky vs A Giri, 2013 Wow, Kamsky was just *totally* outplayed this game by Giri. |

|
Jul-09-13
 | | kingfu: MrSpock has a good point.
Kamsky spent 5 moves getting the Knight into a bad position (a4, a5, Nc3, Na4, Nb6). Did Kamsky believe he was going to win the exchange? Then the wayward Knight spent 3 more moves trying to save a busted kingside (Nc4, Ne3, Nf1). That is equal to two pawns+ which was the material count. |
|
Jul-09-13 | | actinia: Kamsky has been my favorite player since the PCA days. Tough to see him have a poor tournament because he is capable of so much more. I believe the knight moves and pawn moves on the queenside were intended to give white chances against the light squares on the queenside. But this was not well-calculated as black's central and kingside play clearly put black ahead. |
|
Jul-09-13
 | | kingfu: Consistency seems to be the hard part these days. Kamsky wins Aeroflot and Gelfand The Tal Memorial. Yet, these great players have O wins, 4 draws and 6 losses in The Grand Prix. |
|
Jul-17-13 | | Zhbugnoimt: 2 Things that are hard to believe about this game: #1 is that White managed to survive early on the game with his knight on d4, knight on c3 and rook on a1 all lined up on the a1-h8 diagonal. #2 is that Black had no useful discovered check on the h2-b8 diagonal. |

Aug-06-13 | | The Last Straw: Why not 19.♘xa8? |
|
Aug-07-13 | | The Last Straw: If 19.♘xa8 ♖xd1, after 20.♖cxd1 the white knight can make it back through b6. |

Jan-15-14 | | Amarande: Hmmmm ...
Apparently White either DID have a resource at move 43, or the puzzle's posted one ply short of the mark? |
|
Jan-15-14
 | | Phony Benoni: Looks like this should be a <43...?> puzzle. Will report. |
|
Jan-15-14 | | dumbgai: The puzzle should be the position after 43. Kh1, with black to move right? Right now the front page shows the position after 42...Nd2 with white to move. |

 | | chessgames.com: Our apologies for the error: this puzzle is 43…? and not 43.? |
|
Jan-15-14 | | Patriot: I'm thinking 43.h4 to remove the guard.
43...Qh6 44.Qe5+ Kh7 45.Rc8 looks winning.
But...
43...Nf3+ may kill it...
44.Kh1 Nxe1 45.hxg5 and the knight is trapped.
44.Kh1 Qf4 I'm not sure here...
So maybe 43.Nxd2:
43...Rxd2
I think 43.h4 is best, although I'm not sure about the 43...Nf3+ line: 44.Kh1 Qxh4+ 45.Qxh4 Nxh4 looks bad for white.
Back to 43.Nxd2:
43...Rxd2 44.Qe4 Rxg2+ 45.Qxg2 Qxc1+
Everything seems losing, so perhaps 43.Kh1:
43...Rxh3+ 44.gxh3 Nf3 45.Qe3
43...Nf3 44.gxf3 Rxf3 45.Rc3 may work.
I'm just not seeing it. Almost everything seems to lose! 43.Kh1 holds I think. Oh well, it's late and I'm sure I missed something here and it's not that I didn't try. |
|
Jan-15-14 | | RookFile: Kamsky played this with ambition. This wasn't played in the hold the draw in hand style with white. |
|
Jan-15-14 | | chesssalamander: If 44....gxh3, then 45. Qd5+, then if either 45. Kh2 or 45. Kg1, then 45....Nf3+, forking queen and king. |
|
Jan-15-14 | | abuzic: 43...Rxh3+
white cannot take 44.gxh3 Qd5+ 45.Kg1 Nf3+ 46.Kf2 Nxe1;
if 44.Kg1 Nf3+ 45.Kf2 Nxe1;
and if 44.Nh2 Rh4 45.Rc3 Qf4 46.g3 Qf3+ 47.Rxf3 Rxh2+ 48.Kxh2 Nf3+ 49.Kg2 Nxe1+ |
|
Jan-15-14 | | M.Hassan: "Medium/Easy"
Black to play 43...?
Black is 2 pawns up.
43............Rxh3+
<if 44.gxh3 Qh5+ 45.Kg1 Nf3+ picking up the Queen> 44.Nh2 Rh4
45.Rd1 Ne4
IMHO the fight was to get one more pawn! because now Black is 3 pawns up but can keep playing.
Time to check.
===============
White resigned after move 43?
Oh yes, White's a pawn will also fall and may be that's the reason for resignation. |
|
Jan-15-14 | | agb2002: Black is two pawns ahead.
The black knight is very close to White's king and heavy pieces. This suggests the possibility of a winning fork. In particular, if White's g-pawn disappears then Qd5+ forces the white king to go to g1 or h2 and Nf3+ would win the queen. Therefore, 43... Rxh3+: A) 44.gxh3 Qd5+ 45.Kg1(h2) Nf3+ followed by 46... Nxe8 and ... Qxa5 - + [Q+3P vs R+N]. B) 44.Kg1 Nf3+ 45.Kf2 Nxe8 46.Rxe8 (46.gxh3 Nd3+; 46.Kxe8 Qxc1+) 46... Ra3 - + [Q+2P vs N]. White can't build a fortress in any case. |
|
Jan-15-14 | | abuzic: Black could finish earlier with 38...Nf2+
38...Nf2+ 39.Kh2 Qd6+ 40.Kg1 Nxh3+ 41.Kh1 Nf4;
 click for larger view38...Nf2+ 39.Kg1 Nxh3+ 40.Kh2 Qh5 41.gxh3 Rd3;
 click for larger view38...Nf2+ 39.Qxf2 Qxc1+ 40.Kh2 Rd1.

Jan-15-14 | | Patriot: <<chessgames.com>: Our apologies for the error: this puzzle is 43…? and not 43.?> Actually I learned more from move 43.?. It became a desperate attempt to find a move that doesn't lose, but that move doesn't exist! Sometimes that's what we are faced with, and this was a good learning experience! It's funny I also decided 43.Kh1 as in the game. |
