|
Sep-10-04 | | Jesuitic Calvinist: Not such a bad joke, Offramp (although it's taken me 4 months to get it) -"Romancing the Stone", film with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, in 1986. It would be criminal to start a trend for this sort of thing, but I can't resist: there will soon be a new version of the Charles Dickens classic "A Tal of Two Cities". Not forgetting "From Keres to Eternity", featuring the famous scene with Korchnoi and Petrosian rolling around together on the sandy foundations of the Nimzo-Larsen attack, while the thundering waves of unplayed tactical possibilities pound incessantly behind them. And of course (apologies in advance for this one) "Capablanca", the 1941 classic starring Humphrey Bogart. As is well known, Bogie's famous line was not really "Play it again, Sam". What he actually said was "Play the Meran, Sam". Those were the days when players needed encouraging to play the Slav Defence - now it seems there's no stopping them. There was a war on then, though. The possibilities are both endless and disturbing. |
