[what is this?]

Arvids Zirnis

Arvids Zirnis finished 10th at the 1941 Latvian SSR championship in Riga, won by Alexander Koblents. After World War II, he emigrated to a DP (displaced) persons camp in West Germany, where he participated in several major chess events. At the 1947 Hanau International DP tournament (January 30-February 10), Zirnis finished 9th behind Lucius Endzelins, Elmars Zemgalis and Friedrich Saemisch. This event also featured an internal scoring among the Latvian players. The contestant who scored best against his Latvian competition would be crowned the American zone DP Latvian champion. In this competition Zirnis shared 6th-7th with Heinricks Kalnins. Endzelins, Zemgalis and Karlis Alexander Ozols tied for first. After a double round robin playoff between the three winners held in Fischbach (May 14-21 1947), Elmars Zemgalis triumphed to become American zone DP Latvian champion.

At the Hermanis Mattisons Memorial tournament in Hanau 1947 (September 27-October 8), Zirnis finished shared 11th-12th with Romanas Arlauskas, behind winner Lucius Endzelins. At the 1948 Fischbach DP tournament (May 14-21) Zirnis finished shared 4th-5th with Leonids Dreibergs, behind Endzelins and Ozols who tied for 1st. Endzelins won a subsequent playoff match to become the American zone DP Latvian champion.

Thank you <hemy>! There is also a fair bit of interesting biographical detail provided by Val Zemitis that I can add to the biography.

<hemy> Excellent!

I found out today that <Arvids Zirnis> "won the open championship of Baden in 1947."

This information comes from an article <Sigmund Wotkowsky> (Sigmund Wolk) wrote in the English magazine 'Chess' (February 1949) pp. 106-107; 128. This article was reprinted in John Donaldson's biography of <Elmars Zemgalis>.

Sadly that is all the detail about Arvids Zirnis that he gives in the article.
